A Moment of YES: October 9th

Focus on actions you control, not outcomes you don't. In soccer, that means winning the ball and making runs, not worrying about the referee or weather. Pick one or two concrete behaviors and trust the process.

Good morning, everyone. Here is your moment of yes for Friday, October 9th, coming to you from the steering wheel cam in the Honda Pilot. Happy Friday, everyone. Hope you guys are having a great morning and have some exciting plans this weekend. Your moment of yes for today is an idea that I've been working with my sports teams with recently, and I'm big on this idea, and it is, it is actions over outcomes. Focus on the actions, not the outcomes. Because most of us get distracted. A distraction that takes away from action is when we get distracted with the things that we actually can't control. So in a sporting contest like a soccer game, it's the referee, it's the weather, it's the field, it's the other team, it's our parents, it's our players. All these things are distractions. Mm-hmm. And the more we focus on this, the more we focus on distractions, the less effective we are because we are actually giving our energy to something that we can't control. So the way to remedy that is to focus on action. What are the actions I can do right now which will lead to desired outcomes? And so as an athlete or a player, I tell them, what are the 1 or 2 actions that if you do successfully, You'll have a good game. Let's keep thinking about those actions over and over and over again. Win the ball, make runs, challenge 50/50 balls. Because if that's my frame of mind while I'm playing, I'm going to focus on the actions, not the distractions. And so the game then becomes how quickly, when we notice that we're distracted thinking about something that's not an action, how quickly we come back to focusing on the action. So for us, how do we apply that to our everyday? So if we know based on our habits, our routines, our behaviors, which actions we focus on either personally or professionally, when we do these actions, our day tends to go better. When I do these actions, my work tends to go better. When I do these actions, my relationships tend to go better. tend to be healthier. So your moment of yes for today is to focus on the actions that lead to your desired outcomes. It doesn't mean you're going to get your desired outcomes, but by focusing on the actions, you put yourself in a position for the best possible outcome. Actions over outcomes. It's also another way of saying trust the process instead of focusing on the results. So there you have it. That's your moment of yes for today. Take that into your Friday as well as your weekend. Have an awesome weekend. I will see you guys on Monday.
