AMOY: Chameleon Effect

The chameleon effect means people unconsciously perform to match others' expectations and labels, even unspoken ones. Become aware of the labels you assign yourself and others, monitor environments that impose hidden expectations, and stay grounded in something larger than external judgment.
Chapters
Good morning, everyone. Here is your moment of yes for today. Now yesterday I talked about the casino effect. Today I want to talk about the chameleon effect. And so I'm reading this great book right now called Sway, S-W-A-Y, which talks about sort of how we think we're rational thinkers when we're really not. And so the book tells a few different studies talking about this idea called the chameleon effect. And essentially Obviously, we know that if we filled our thoughts with a certain amount of labels or judgments and then looked at someone that way, that's obviously going to affect how we treat them. If we've got these preconceived labels about them, we're going to end up treating them in the way that we're thinking about them. That makes sense. I think we can all agree upon that. What the chameleon effect, some of these tests have revealed, is even if the person who you're working with doesn't know what the— what— how they are judging you or how you've been labeled, you will start to perform to the ability of their expectations. So the way that they're treating you will reach you sort of on a subconscious level where it actually affects your performance and how you show up, almost as if you are meeting their expectations, and your performance will actually represent that. So you will subconsciously start to perform at a label that you didn't even know that you were labeled at. Pretty interesting. So your moment of yes for today is, is really twofold. Is to be conscious of and think about different labels or judgments you might be thinking about other people. Your kids, your coworkers, your family members, people on the road. Which we should all do and take stock of as well as how we're thinking about ourselves. Also though, be conscious of the environment that you're in as far as The thought that you're not allowing yourself to be labeled or being sucked into a label that might exist out there, whether you know it or not. So being really conscious of how you're showing up and really being conscious of your thoughts and your energy and your intentions, and just really kind of connecting yourself to your spiritual source, to love, to God, to the universe, to whatever gives you your sense of limitlessness. Yeah. And potential. So not to allow yourself to get sucked into someone else's judgment. So it's called the Chameleon Effect. I think it's really helpful, really super, and I'm reading more about it, but wanted to share it with you guys today as your moment of yes. So have a wonderful day, everyone. Thank you.
