AMOY: Change the Root!

Your happiness or suffering comes from your beliefs, not from what happens to you. The speaker uses the metaphor "change the root, change the fruit" to argue that shifting your underlying beliefs about yourself and the world is the only way to change how you experience reality.

Good morning, everyone. Here's your moment of yes for today. Happy Saturday to you. So I've been doing a lot of teaching this week on the idea of adversity and tying that back to your beliefs and your perceptions, your perceptions and your beliefs sort of shaping your reality. And so the tendency, from my experience, the tendency is no matter No matter how sort of good or bad things are, and which good and bad are obviously only judgments that we make of events. And if we are kind of continuously in a negative or a victim state of mind, as I like to call it, it's easy to try to connect that to the reason we feel that way is because of the events going on in our life. And when we're feeling good, that's because of the events going on in our life. So it's really easy to just credit or attribute sort of our happiness or sadness, the good or the bad, compared to the events going on in our life, which in reality is just a judgment that we make. One of my favorite quotes is, you cannot change the fruit unless you change the root. And which says it's not the events really that are going on in your life that create your happiness or your sadness. It's actually the beliefs you have. It is the beliefs that create your lens, and it's the lens that colors your reality. And so no matter how good or bad something is, it is your beliefs about yourself, beliefs about the world, beliefs about other people that essentially determine how you look at them or how you think about life. So obviously, if you tend to be more of a positive person, no matter what event is going on, You're going to tend to have more of a positive response to it and vice versa. So I've been teaching that a lot this week. It's very sort of top of mind in thinking about what areas of my life do I feel— do I still feel like I'm struggling in? And the temptation is just to want the event to be different instead of going back to what belief do I have about this situation that continues to sort of be a disability for me? And looking at the belief, not looking at the event. Does that make sense? Or did I just mumble for 2 minutes? Think about it. That's your moment of yes for today, everyone. Have a wonderful Saturday. Thank you.
