AMOY: Normal vs. Common

Most people do something doesn't mean you should. The speaker separates common from normal, arguing that your unique path is your real standard, not what the majority does. Stop comparing yourself to everyone else and listen to what your own heart says.

Good morning, everyone. Happy Black Friday. Here is your moment of yes for today. Hopefully, everyone had a nice Thanksgiving yesterday. No matter what you did, again, hope you had a great day. Today's moment of yes is actually an idea that has been surfacing for me for a few months now, and I'm sure I'll continue to articulate it, but it's the idea of normal versus common. As I talk with a lot of people and I work with a lot of people, there's this feeling that if I'm not doing what everyone else is doing or if my experience or my journey doesn't look like everyone else's, and by looks like, what we perceive to be everyone else's journey, there's this feeling of I must not be normal, therefore there must be something wrong with me. When thinking about that, I often challenge people, don't mistake common for normal. Just because a million people or a thousand people or all your peers do something the same way doesn't mean that it's normal. It just means that it's common. It's common to that group of people, or it might be common to a million people. So, not to mistake common with normal. Just because a bunch of people do the same thing, that makes it common. That makes it common to a majority. What is normal is— well, what is normal? What is normal for you is you. It's your experience. It's your journey. And not comparing yourself to what the majority does or what a population of people do and mistaking that for that's the normal thing and therefore there must be something wrong with you. Don't mistake normal for common. What is your journey? What is your experience? I'll tell you what it is. It's whatever your journey and experience is. Embrace that. Stop looking outside of yourself. Look inward. Keep listening to your heart, not comparing, and just living your yes, living your purpose, loving yourself, and keeping your focus as simple as that. There's nothing normal, maybe common, but there is nothing normal about your journey or experience, and that's a good thing. Embrace it. That's your moment of yes for today, everyone. Have a great day. Bye.
