AMOY: Not Your Profession

Travis Thomas argues your purpose isn't tied to a specific job title. A doctor's real calling might be helping people, which you can do countless ways. Focus on the qualities that excite you, not the profession you think you need.

Good morning. Here is your moment of yes. As you can see, I got a little haircut, compliments of my wife Hollister. So thank you there. She's my own version of Supercuts or Great Clips or maybe a salon. Maybe that's more of a compliment. So in preparing for the first ever Yes Live, which we had last night, hello to those of you who came. An idea that came to me was Thinking about your yes or your purpose is that your yes is not your profession, it is your expression. And I think a lot of times when we think about our purpose or our calling or that thing that we feel that we're supposed to do in life, we connect it to a specific profession. We connect it to or attach it to a specific form. And unless we achieve that specific outlined form, Then we don't feel like we're living our calling, living our yes. So instead, to think of it as an expression of the qualities of the ideas that really light our fire, that really make us feel alive. And so if your passion is to help people, maybe you think that that has to be in the form of, let's say, a doctor. But maybe you never become a doctor, but that fire of helping people can show up in an infinite number of ways. And I know for me, you know, growing up, I thought, oh, it'd be great to be on Saturday Night Live. Oh, that's my purpose. Well, no, my purpose isn't to get to a specific form or outcome. It's expressing the qualities that go into living that idea or that dream. So it's your expression, it's not your profession. And so when we can boil things down to the qualities and the ideas of doing the things that express the qualities That light our fire, that light our yes, that bring out our purpose. That's what brings the joy. It's not about the extrinsic. It's all about the intrinsic. So it's not your profession. It is your expression. That is your moment of yes for today. Have a wonderful day.
