AMOY: Put in the Time!

Elite performance comes from deliberate practice, not innate talent. Spend even a few minutes daily on what you enjoy, and small efforts compound into exponential improvement over weeks and months. Stop comparing yourself to others and focus on the work.

Good morning, everyone. Here's your moment of yes for today. I'm reading a great book right now called Bounce, and the book is all about sort of elite performers, athletes, performers, etc. What is it about them that sort of made them exceptional? And it kind of falls in line with Malcolm Gladwell's The Outliers, and it's debunking the idea that some people are born with a talent gene. And so the one thing that has in common with those 2 books, and many things it has in common, is this idea that people who have been really successful have put in the hours, whether it's the 10,000 hours or the 10-year rule. They've put in the time. Some of them just happen to start at a very young age. Others, it's later in life. But the consistency is everyone has put in the time to reach that level of success. When I think of a lot of us, I know we all have things that we're passionate about, we really enjoy doing, but we're not doing them. So we're either thinking, I don't have time, and we make it too intimidating to think about how much time we would have to put in instead of just going, I've got a few minutes each day, I enjoy it. And you imagine a few minutes each day for a month, a few minutes each day for a few months, that starts to equal a lot of progress. And I think we tend to think that people who are— who enjoy what they're doing were born with a special talent when in fact When you enjoy what you're doing and you combine that with putting in the actual time, that's where you find really, really success. And sometimes it feels quicker because it's not painful. You're enjoying it, so you want to do it more, and therefore you obviously exponentially get better. So what do you enjoy doing? What do you want to spend more time with? Stop comparing yourselves to others. Stop thinking about when will I get to this level of goodness or success with it. And just do it and love doing it while you're doing it. That's really all it takes. To love what you're doing and then you're going to want to do it more. And then you'll start to see that accumulation. You'll start to see that success happen for you. Give it a try. That's your moment of yes for today, everyone. Have a wonderful day.
