Biden Administration Readies New Sanctions Targeting Iran’s Oil Exports

In this Persian‑language interview, Omid Shokri, a Washington‑based oil and energy analyst, discusses the United States Treasury’s recent decision to sanction ten companies and one vessel tied to Iran’s oil and petrochemical sales. The sanctioned entities operate in Iran, the United Arab Emirates, India, Hong Kong and China, marking the first time the Biden administration has directly targeted Chinese firms in response to Iran‑related oil sanctions. Shokri cites the latest OPEC data, noting that Iran’s crude exports fell from about 710,000 barrels per day two days ago to roughly 410,000 barrels per day four days ago, a decline he attributes to both market pressure from China and the new sanctions. He explains that the sanctions will likely further shrink export volumes, eroding a critical source of state revenue and pushing Iran’s economy toward deeper recession. The conversation then shifts to the recent wave of nationwide protests and the potential for widespread strikes, sparked by the killing of a protester and broader political grievances. Shokri argues that these internal disruptions compound the external pressure, threatening employment, the energy sector’s operational capacity, and the government’s ability to fund essential projects. He warns that without a revived nuclear‑deal framework and access to international financing, Iran could face severe fiscal distress, possibly bordering on bankruptcy. The interview paints a bleak, cautionary picture of Iran’s economic outlook under the combined weight of renewed U.S. sanctions and escalating domestic unrest.
