Iran protests and the future of Iran economy @AlHadath

In this Arabic interview, host Speaker A questions Dr. Omid Shokri, a foreign‑policy and energy‑strategy advisor, about the 2022 Iranian protests that erupted after the death of Mahsa Amini. Shokri argues that the protests are rooted primarily in demands for women’s freedoms, but that the underlying economic crisis—exacerbated by U.S. sanctions—has kept the unrest alive. He provides a series of quantitative snapshots: before sanctions Iran exported roughly 3‑4 million barrels of oil per day, generating $50‑60 billion in annual revenue; after sanctions revenues fell to $20 billion and then $10‑11 billion, and daily exports collapsed to about 100 000 barrels, with only a small illicit flow remaining. The loss of oil income has created a liquidity crunch, a shortage of hard currency, soaring inflation, high unemployment, and an energy shortage as winter approaches. Shokri also details how the Iranian regime diverts a large share of its dwindling oil earnings to fund regional proxies (Houthis in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon, militias in Iraq and Syria) and overseas operations such as missile launches toward Ukraine, leaving little for domestic welfare. The interview links these fiscal pressures to the protesters’ grievances, suggesting that while the immediate spark was a gender‑based injustice, the broader economic hardship fuels the political dimension of the unrest.
