Iran’s Gas Crisis Adds to Unrest in a Heart of Raisi’s Power Base

In a Persian‑language interview, oil‑and‑energy specialist Hamideh Shokri (based in Washington) discusses the severe winter gas and energy crisis gripping Iran. She explains that widespread gas cut‑offs affect not only household heating but also daily‑wage workers, bakeries, and other essential services, deepening public discontent. Shokri points out that the 2021 presidential election did not produce a comprehensive energy‑security plan, leaving the country without a coordinated response to the natural‑resource and water crises. Short‑term coping measures—such as diverting gas from petrochemical and industrial uses, increasing fuel‑burning generators, and relying more on thermal power—are being employed, but they raise pollution and health concerns. The expert stresses that without lifting sanctions or implementing structural reforms (e.g., expanding domestic gas production, modernising the grid, and investing in renewables), Iran’s energy outlook remains bleak, and the unrest in Raisi’s core support regions is likely to intensify.
