North Sea Rhum gas field deal

In this Persian-language interview, Om Omid Shokri explains that the North Sea Rhum gas field, while geographically located outside Iran, is being considered as a potential source of gas for the United Kingdom to reduce its reliance on Russian supplies. He clarifies that BP currently has no direct investment in Iranian oil and gas fields, and therefore the Rhum field does not count as Iranian territory. Shokri argues that because BP is not investing directly in Iran, other international oil companies are unlikely to receive a sanctions waiver to invest in Iranian on‑shore assets unless broader US‑Iran tensions are resolved. He also discusses the strategic importance of a US sanctions exemption (معافیت) for reviving Iran’s oil market, noting that the waiver could be granted after a specific date (13 November) but that its likelihood remains low. The conversation touches on the production potential of the Rhum field (about 2 billion cubic meters per year) and the UK’s motivation to secure alternative gas supplies amid geopolitical pressures.
