Rebuilding Trust in a Relationship

Vicky Samios walks through rebuilding trust after betrayal using a three-step framework: radical honesty, consistency, and vulnerability. She shares her own story with her husband Peter through a COVID relocation and financial strain, showing how trust repair requires slow, repeated actions, not quick fixes.

Today we're diving into one of the toughest challenges that couples face, rebuilding trust after it's been broken. Now, trust is fragile, and when it cracks, it feels like everything falls apart, and you wonder if things can ever be the same. Let me tell you about Anna and David. David made a mistake that shattered Anna's trust. She felt betrayed, hurt, and unsure if their relationship could survive. Look, I've got many Anna and David stories. Been through them myself. You know, when I was pregnant with my daughter, we— Peter and I ventured into a business deal and a business to start our third practice. And starting our third practice was challenging. We had two young kids, one on the way, I was heavily pregnant, and we moved. We moved from the country. This was around COVID time. Uh, moved from the country to Sydney, back in Sydney, to be with family because we thought, hey, look, we need more support. And look, everyone's busy doing their own thing. I didn't expect anyone to, to mind my children. It is on us. So we went and thought, hey, we're gonna do what we know best. We're gonna work together and build our practice. And unfortunately, things didn't go as planned, and it really knocked us down. And so I lost trust in Peter because he trusted certain people who then really came in the middle of our marriage because it caused so many problems they don't even know, because we decided we were going to build ourselves up. If you're waiting for the right time, the right time is now. Applyformentorship.com. Now let's get back to the video. And what we did, I went from bank to bank, from broker to broker, trying to get loans so we could start our third practice in a different location. And we're in Newtown, right? Newtown now. And it's kind of like a miracle. I thank God. I was praying to God and I'm like, we need to fend our family— for our family, we need to make money. Peter didn't have a job, I didn't have a job, COVID had hit, I was about to give birth, and then when I did give birth, um, we had bought our building. So it's amazing what you can achieve by rebuilding relationships, because if I any other woman with what happened would have absolutely lost distrust in their husband and not come back from it. But I'm a very resilient lady, okay? I never give up. Like, I didn't give up on us, and I didn't give up— nor did Peter, right? We're in this together. I didn't give up on us building a business together and starting fresh in Sydney. Because like, when you make a country change from Sydney, it's great, but as a new couple, we didn't have anything to our name. We had nothing. And when we moved back, we had been living very minimally, and also the property prices in rural Australia are very different to Sydney. So there's a massive gap, and I thought, how do we really close this gap? And it was through having a business in our building, which is what we did, and we've got our practice now. And now we're at a different season of our life where Peter and I are here to help others. If we can come back from blow after blow after blow, you can. I had blows last year as well, health blows, and they were big reminders of our why, of our purpose. And I'm here to help you rebuild your life and rebuild trust and your purpose in this life, because we have one life and it's our opportunity and it's our obligation to live it in a really beautiful way for us, for our relationship with our partners, our husbands and wives, and also for our children and the future generations. Don't you want to leave a legacy behind? So stop right there. Rebuilding trust is not about quick fixes or empty apologies. That is all rubbish. It doesn't work. It's a slow and sometimes painful process that demands radical honesty and consistent action and really getting through the pain that you're going through. And many couples expect an apology to fix everything. It doesn't, because mistakes get repeated again and again, and then someone's in this cycle of hurt and hope, hurt and hope, hurt and hope. But with real change happening, the words are not just noise. Now, Anna and David had to face uncomfortable realities, and they had to rebuild from the ground up, much like myself. Peter and I have had to be rebuilt from the ground up probably 3 times now. And how do you do that? Well, step 1 is radical honesty. Both partners must commit to transparency, even when it's uncomfortable. Step 2, consistency. Trust is rebuilt in small repeated actions over time, showing you care, showing someone is valued. Step 3, vulnerability. Both must be willing to open up and risk being hurt again. I've been there. It works, okay? This is all stuff that works. Now pause for a moment and think about your own relationship because I want you to get as much out of this as you can. I'm here to help you shift your life. This is the thing you need to do now. What's one small action that could start rebuilding trust today? Because crap happens. It does. Then we make meaning of it, and then we make it a problem, and then it forms like a knife between you and your partner. Okay, it can be different. Life can look very different. You've just got to perceive it in a different way. You've got to hang around the right people and be in a community of people who want your good, okay? Because not everyone around you wants your good, and I hope you understand what I mean by that. So I want you to just stop, and I want you to realize that sometimes rebuilding that trust means that you've got to redefine your relationship. Your roles might change, what you do your routines, everything. And it might mean new boundaries, new expectations, or even new ways of loving. It might mean burning the boats and having a completely different life that you maybe have dreamed of or imagined, actually going for it. Because trust isn't just about going back to how things were. You've evolved, they've evolved, relationships evolve. You can't go back to the same. It's about creating something stronger. This is what I do. And like with Anna and David, they discovered that their relationship could be deeper and more authentic than before, but only because they were willing to do the hard work. Now you've got to put your hard work in. You've got to persist. I want you to think, if trust has been broken in your relationship, what's one step that you can take today to start rebuilding? Maybe it's a conversation, maybe it's a new commitment. Or simply showing up differently or taking care of yourself? Okay, I've lost 10 kilos. What do you need to do to feel better so you can show up better? And share your thoughts or experiences in the comments. I really want everyone to let me know. I want to know what's going on for you. Let's support each other. Please remember that trust can be rebuilt stronger and deeper than before. We're only human, we make mistakes. If this message resonates, like, subscribe, and share with someone who needs this. And next, we're gonna talk about why appreciation is the ultimate relationship superpower. Thank you so much for being here. Keep building love. Go and live your full life. Applyformentorship.com. Let's get you going.
