Why Asking for Help Is Self-Love

Vivek George shares how weekly therapy using Internal Family Systems helped him work through relationship anxiety and past trauma. He explains that asking for professional help is self-love, not weakness, and points to resources like the 988 hotline and findtreatment.gov to find mental health support.

Hey guys, welcome back to another day of this self-love practice. My name is Vivek George if you don't know me, and every single day on this channel we do a new self-love practice, uh, to— because self-love is so core to how we connect with the world and, and our work and our family and friends. And if we don't have it, it really messes up a lot of things. I know this because of my own experience, my own life, and seeing those around me. And this is what spurred on this practice almost 30 days ago when I started it. I was dealing with some real, uh, relationship issues that were due to partly, partly, not totally, but partly to these self-belief and confidence issues. So I've been excited to work every single day to on myself and more importantly, to share it with all of you, because I believe by working together, coming together, we can become stronger in our own knowledge that we are important, that we are valuable. And today's practice is also inspired by some work that I'm doing, but outside of these videos. So, uh, I'm working with a friend who does a particular type of— I wouldn't call it— I don't know if I should call it therapy, but it's sort of in that vein a practice called Internal Family Systems, IFS. And every— what basically the system of practice is, is it— we— it believes that all of us have different parts of us. We have parts of us that are from our earlier childhood in life, maybe even later in life through some more severe trauma, that is there to protect us and help us, but those lessons that we learned from childhood or a later point, they don't serve us any longer. They're a bit unhealthy because they're old lessons and maybe not, you know, really grounded in reality, but just kind of a skewed reality from that period. And by doing the work with her every single week, I've uncovered some real trauma. I've worked through some many different issues. And it's really helped me be more confident and believe in myself so much more, uh, along with these videos, along with some other practices I do. And so what I wanted to inspire all of you to do is to take a little bit of time today to look up some resources that potentially could be helpful, uh, for you And while some of you might not have the money or, you know, it's a little challenging right now to afford something like that, there are free resources out there that, you know, you can find depending on your city, state, or wherever you are. And I would encourage you to look it up. And those who do have the means, I would encourage you to try to find a, you know, somebody that maybe you can talk to that can— is a professional in this that can be helpful. This may not be for everybody, but I wanted to present this as an opportunity to work on with a professional to help you cultivate self-belief with that mindset in place when you're working with them. And it's been incredibly valuable. I've been doing this work for a couple months now, maybe 6, 7 months, and it's every week I feel like I'm uncovering other issues. Now, it does take time for those things to change, but just the knowledge is a first step, and that practice is also an important step. You know, for example, today I realized that some of this anxiety that I'm feeling with a new relationship that I'm in is because of the other person's internal issues, and their issues are kind of meeting my issues. And there's a sort of this sense between the two of us, not spoken but, uh, sort of intuitive sense between the two of us that, you know, both are about a bit uneasy, and that's created some more tension than probably helpful. And so I think that's gonna be— that was an interesting insight that I can bring to the relationship, and perhaps we can work through it, or maybe not. But it was interesting to know, and it's given me more confidence in myself and more belief in myself because I've realized the issue is just not just me. Yes, I have work to do. That's why I keep showing up and doing these videos and doing so much other work. But it's not just me, it's also some things on their end. And it was very helpful to do this internal work with a professional to help me find that out. So I wanted to encourage you to do that. And, and, um, if you're not sure what resources are out there for you, well, there's a couple things that I found in preparation for this video. Well, 988 is a hotline for mental health issues. that people are going through. Check it out, you know, give them a call. Instead of 911, call 988, and they are an amazing resource that can provide a lot of direction and tips and suggestions there. They're well prepared for this type of things. Additionally, you can check out— you go to your local college and see if they have a department that takes takes in new clients, you know, for their psychiatry or psychology department that may be able to work with you. Uh, also there are often local communities, peer-to-peer groups, that maybe it's not as professional but is there to support one another. And lastly, there's findservice.gov. I mean, triple check actually, uh, it's— oh, sorry, findtreatment.gov. That sounds more reasonable. Uh, that also is available to where you can find different resources in your city, state, um, that could be of help to you. So there's a bunch of things out there. That's just the tip of the iceberg. And certainly you can do some Googling, or if you have access to ChatGPT, certainly ask ChatGPT for some input on this as well. And I'm sure you'll find some great professional resources. It can be really helpful just to be able to talk to someone, get their perspective, a third person's perspective that's not really attached to you can be very helpful. But, and this is such a powerful practice of self-love, making that time, A, to find the resources, and then B, on a regular basis, see this professional so that you can get better, get stronger, and have more belief in yourself and more love for yourself. Okay, hopefully this was helpful. If it— if you have questions or if you're looking for any resources, I'll put a bunch of the stuff in the description below. But if you do have some questions or concerns or feedback, please share, you know, in the comments. Hopefully this video has been helpful. If it has been, consider liking and subscribing to the channel. And if you're looking for more self-love practices that you can do right now, check out the video over here. Have a great day, and thank you for joining me in this self-love practice. Don't forget to love yourself. Take care.
