LIX, a Mexico City school founded in 2014, won the 2015 MoonBots competition in the Google Lunar XPRIZE, the first Latin American victory. Their students aged 6-15 build hands-on projects like roller coasters using robotics, programming, and design thinking. They're applying to the Edumission Challenge for guidance to spread their methods to other educators.
Chapters
Hi, we are LIX and STEAM School in Mexico City.
We are founded with the objective to inspire and empower kids for the future.
To develop projects and solutions with their passions. LIX means builders in the Mayan culture, and we started in 2014 coaching teams to participate in international robotics competitions. In 2015, one of our teams won MoonBots, a Google Lunar XPRIZE challenge, being the first time that a Latin American team won this competition. With this, the history of one of our students and our methodology were featured in a documentary produced by Google and J.J. Abrams and directed by the Oscar winner Orlando Bond Blancy.
In the summer, we built this roller coaster with the kids between 6 and 15 years old, and they built it by their own.
That's what we proposed at LIX and ATU, a 3 Integrated Access Educational Level. First, technical knowledge, referring to STEAM to the E. The E means how kids use STEAM knowledge to be entrepreneurs, developing in them a persistence mindset.
Second, it refers to the 4 C's skill set: environment and social responsibility, ethical values, and impact. And the third one, the abstraction. It refers how to apply the technical knowledge on specific goals.
With this methodology, we use as main tools robotics, programming, design thinking, and maker activities. We want to participate in this challenge in order to receive professional guidance and to inspire more educators and schools to implement our tools and methodologies in their programs.
