In this episode of the Mezzo Pieno podcast, host Mattia Battagion interviews Dr. Andrea Illy, former CEO and current president of Illy Caffè, member of the Club of Rome and co‑chair of the Regenerative Society Foundation. The conversation begins with a provocative question about whether traditional sustainability is “dead,” leading Illy to explain a new systemic view he calls the “ecological wheel,” which highlights the interdependence of environmental, social and economic factors. Illy describes how, seven years ago, he began studying regenerative agriculture as a way to decarbonise the agri‑food sector by sequestering carbon in soil. He details the biological mechanisms—enhancing soil microbiota, organic carbon, biodiversity, and multi‑cropping—that make soils more resilient to climate shocks and can even become carbon‑negative. The discussion moves to the coffee supply chain, noting that by 2050 up to 50 % of coffee‑growing land may be lost, that climate‑driven price spikes are already occurring, and that smallholder farmers (who produce 85 % of coffee) need collective support to adopt regenerative practices. Illy recounts how Brazilian coffee producers quickly embraced these methods, achieving higher yields, lower water use, reduced agro‑chemicals, and superior cup quality. The interview then expands to the broader ambition of applying regenerative principles beyond agriculture. Illy explains how the Regenerative Society Foundation, co‑founded with Maria Paola Chiesi and Davide Bollanti, seeks to transform the linear, extractive economic model into a circular, regenerative one. He outlines the need to cut resource extraction by up to 90 %, adopt cleantech, and invest 2–4 % of global GDP in ecosystem restoration, turning positive externalities into internalised business value. The conversation also touches on Illy’s recent book “La società rigenerativa,” which contains 17 sector‑specific chapters that blend theory with concrete case studies, demonstrating that regeneration is scalable and already in practice. Finally, Illy announces the upcoming “Giro di Boa” event in Milan, a milestone for the Foundation’s 2030 roadmap, where international speakers will share experiences on ecosystem regeneration, urban and biological restoration, and business models. The episode closes with a call to listeners to read the book and follow the Foundation’s initiatives.

E se sì, what's next?
