A short Dutch-language talk by Cornelis Peters about human–microbe co-evolution and the importance of natural childbirth and breastfeeding for establishing a healthy infant microbiome and immune system. Peters argues humans co-evolved with microbes over hundreds of millions of years, that vaginal birth provides a maternal 'pioneer colonization' of microbes, and that breastfeeding supplies human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) which support beneficial bacterial strains; formula attempts to mimic but remains an approximation of nature.
