Hustle Culture Will Ruin You

Dr. Cara, a psychotherapist with 25 years working with global leaders, argues that hustle culture is a fear response that kills clarity and relationships. Daniel Goleman's research shows emotional intelligence, not hours worked, predicts exceptional leadership. She introduces a "pivot" from busy-work to purposeful action.

You heard that if you just grind hard enough, wake up early enough, skip enough vacations, stay late enough, that you would get there, wherever there is. And you believed it. You're still believing it. But here's what I need you to hear. Hustle culture will not get you where you want to go. I'm Dr. Cara, licensed psychotherapist, PhD in international psychology, 25 years working with leaders across 5 continents. And I've watched hustle culture eat people alive. People who were incredibly capable, people who had everything, people who were running so hard, they stopped asking if they were running in the right direction. Hustle culture is a scarcity problem. Consider this, you come in early, you take on the extra project that nobody else wants. You send emails at 11:00 PM to show how committed you are. Why? Because some part of you doesn't believe that what you bring is already enough. That's not drive. That's fear. And here's the real cost. When you're operating from fear, you're not leading, you are performing. And the people that you lead can feel the difference. Research from Daniel Goldman found that emotional intelligence is the strongest predictor of what separates exceptional leaders from average ones. Not hours logged, not output, how you show up, who you are when the pressure is on. Let this land. Emotional intelligence is the strongest predictor of exceptional leadership. If that just hit something in you and you're in it right now and you need a thinking partner today, I built an AI coaching tool called Dr. Cara's Virtual Mind. It's trained in my framework for connected leadership and available 24/7. The link is in the bio. Now let's keep going. Hustle culture is not an ambition. Let me be clear about this. Ambition is knowing what you're building and why. Hustle culture is grinding without direction because standing still feels like failure. Hustle culture says more is always better, rest is falling behind, and if you're not exhausted, you're not trying hard enough. I have to be honest, that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. And here's the danger: those messages don't just live in motivational posts. They get inside of you and they start running the show. Here's what hustle culture takes from you. Your clarity, because you're so busy doing, you never stop to ask if you're doing the right things. Your relationships, because the people at home get what's left, which is usually not much. Your results, yes, your results, because doing more without thinking just means you're producing more of the same. And your sense of self, because when your identity is built on output, what happens when you have a slow quarter, a bad week, a day where nothing goes right? You just don't feel like you failed. You feel like you are the failure. The alternative is not laziness. Now, I know what some of you are thinking. Okay, Dr. Cara, so what? Just do less? No. What I'm talking about is the difference between working hard and working intentionally. In my framework for connected leadership, I call this the pivot. Knowing when to change the direction, not because you gave up, but because you're smart enough to see when the path you're on is taking you somewhere that you don't actually want to go. Ask yourself this. Am I working hard towards something I actually want, or am I staying so busy that I have to sit with the question? Because hustle culture loves the second one. It will keep you moving, it will keep you productive on the surface, and it will quietly take everything that actually matters. You deserve better than that, and the leaders you serve deserve better than that. Your staff deserves better than that. If this hits something for you and you want help working through where you are right now, please check out my Virtual Mind. Again, it's trained in my framework for connected leadership. It will ask you questions to help you find your own answers, real-time, available whenever you need it. The link is in the description. You lead well. Now lead as yourself. I'm Dr. Cara. Connect to yourself first, and then elevate and expand for those you lead.
