The Hidden Protection Game Every Leader Plays (And How to Stop Losing)

Dr. Cara describes how leaders protect their self-worth through image management instead of hard conversations. She proposes shifting from "my worth depends on how I'm perceived" to "my worth is inherent plus my willingness to grow," then offers three steps: name your protection pattern, identify your upgrade, and practice one brave act.

So Monday, we unpacked. How difficult conversations activate our identity fear. But here's what I didn't tell you. There's something even deeper happening. You're not just protecting your identity. You are protecting a secret belief about what makes you valuable as a leader. And until you see this pattern, you'll keep playing that game that you cannot win. Today, I'm exposing the protection game that we all play and showing you how to stop defending and stop start leading. After Monday's episode, several of you messaged me with a similar realization. I'm not just avoiding the conversation, I'm avoiding what it might reveal about me. Exactly. But let's go deeper. When I finally had that conversation with my team member, something fascinating happened. In the days that followed, I noticed that I was hyper analyzing every interaction with them. Were they distant? Did they seem resentful? Was our relationship damaged? Then it hit me. I was still playing the perfection game, just in a different way. Here's what the perfection game looks like in real time before the conversation. If I avoid this, I protect my image as supportive during the conversation. If I soften this, I protect their feelings and mine after the conversation. If I overcompensate, I can repair any damage to how they might see me. Any of this sound familiar? We think we're being strategic, but we're actually being defensive. But here is the pattern. Underneath, we're protecting our worthiness story, the narrative we tell ourselves about what makes us valuable as leaders. Maybe your worthiness story is I'm valuable because people like working with me. Or I'm valuable because I never lose my cool. I'm valuable because I always have the answers. I'm valuable because I create harmony. What is your worthiness story? What's the narrative you're protecting in every difficult conversation? Remember the second pillar of my framework for connected leadership, embodying grace. Know your truth. On Monday, we talked about integrating seemingly opposing values. Today, let's talk about what that actually requires. It requires you to stop protecting and start trusting. Here's what shifted everything for me. After that conversation with my team member, I was in full protection mode, trying to rebuild what I had thought I may have damaged. Then they stopped by my office and said something that stopped me cold. Thank you for respecting me enough to be direct. Most leaders just work around people instead of working with them. Wow. I have been so busy protecting my story of being supportive that I almost missed the actual support that I was providing. This is where grace becomes revolutionary. Grace says your worth isn't in their perception. It is in your presence. Your value isn't in avoiding discomfort, it's in navigating it with integrity. Your leadership isn't in being liked. It is in being real, genuine and authentic. But how do you shift from protection to presence? You start catching yourself in the protection game. Protection mode sounds like how can I say this without upsetting them? What if they think I I need to make sure that they know I care? Presence mode sounds like what needs to be said for our mutual growth. How can I show up fully in this moment? What would love and truth look like here? Notice the shift. Protection is about managing perceptions and presence well. That is about serving purpose. Here's where Monday's conversation evolves into Wednesday's transformation. You don't need a new identity, you need an identity upgrade. That's right. The old identity equation My worth equals their perception plus my performance. Get rid of that. The upgraded equation is my worth equals inherent plus my willingness to grow. When I upgraded my identity equation, everything changed. I stopped asking how do I protect my image as a supportive leader? And started asking how does a secure leader support growth? The answer? By being willing to have the conversations that matter even when they are uncomfortable. Here is your identity integrity. Practice for the week Number one Name your protection pattern. What specific worthiness story do you protect? Take a minute and write it down and then own it. Step 2 Identify your upgrade. If your worth was already secure, how would you lead different? What conversations would you have? Step 3 Practice one brave act this week. Do one thing that serves growth over protection. Have that conversation. Set that boundary. Share that feedback. Remember my team member Three months later they told me the conversation that we had was a turning point. Not because it was comfortable, but because it was real. They knew where they stood and they knew what was possible. That's what happens when you stop protecting and you start leading. The protection game is exhausting. You know why? Because it never ends. There's always another perception to manage, another image to maintain, another expectation to meet. But when you lead from your inherent worth, from your true value rather than earned worth, that is freedom. And boy does it feel good. Because you're not worried about what everybody is thinking. You are standing firm in who you are and knowing your worth. Your worthy Wednesday challenge builds on Monday's work. Now that you have identified the values intention, I want you to identify the worthiness story that you are protecting. What could you change if you didn't need to protect it? Drop a comment with one protection pattern that you are ready to release and let's normalize leading from security rather than defense. Coming Monday, the airplane holding pattern method. Because knowing your worth conceptually is one thing, but maintaining that knowing when the emotions spike, that's where we'll go next. I will show you how to stay grounded when everything in you wants to react. You weren't meant to perform leadership, you were meant to embody it. And that starts with trusting that your worth is not up for debate. Not theirs and not yours. Stop protecting. Start trusting and start leading from your value and your worth. And I want you to stand tense toes down in it until Monday. Remember, you're already worthy. I want you to lead like it's.
