11 Oct 2025 · 10 min
This is a podcast episode by Dr. Tracy Dalgleish (recorded Oct 11, 2025) that discusses the viral Threads moment known as “I Am Sherlocked,” using it to illustrate boundary-setting and the shift from a victim role to ‘main character’ agency in dealing with in‑laws. The episode unpacks why the clip resonated (authentic refusal, holding a partner accountable), gives practical boundary advice (small, gate-like boundaries; saying no without exhaustive explanation), promotes Dr. Dalgleish’s forthcoming book (release/availability noted) and includes sponsor ad reads for Ollie, Subaru’s Share the Love event, Burlington (Spanish line), and Rula (teletherapy provider).

This is Dear Dr. Tracy, your guide to creating relationships that feel good.
Have you seen what's happening on Threads with Imsherlocked? It's everywhere right now and people are following each post like a new episode in a reality series. There are comments, there are theories, there are people creating swag around really great things that I am Sherlocked is saying. And what's so fascinating about this? And I love watching these cultural moments show up on social media because it's often not just the content, it's the reaction that we're all having. And I asked myself what? Why are so many people captivated by one person posting snippets of their day, their boundaries and their inner world? And when I look at this story, the stories are those that I hear in my therapy room every single day when it comes to dealing with their mother in laws. And here's what I think. It's happening because we are watching someone do something that we ourselves crave. This is about taking up space. This is about someone saying no without Apology. She's dropping the rope on what's happened and moving forward. Even if it's not perfect, even if there are messy feelings, she's doing what so many people crave to do. So here's what the original post says and the tag is in laws. And it's a conversation between brother in law and her husband in front of her. And there's two days notice. So her brother in law just invited his family over to host his kid's birthday party at the poster's house. In just two days, this is the.
First she's heard of it.
So here's the conversation. Brother in law. So we're on for Tuesday. Husband says, yeah, sure, no problem, sister in law. The brother in law's wife says, see you on Tuesday. And she says, what's happening on Tuesday? And so she asks, what would you do? In this moment, I Am Sherlocked is showing us how to coexist with your in laws because her mother in law entered the chat. Her sister in law is there as well, and the party unfolds. But what she's doing is she's holding boundaries and she's keeping her husband accountable. Why do we love watching this story unfold? Because we love watching someone rise from the role of victim to the author of her own story. She is saying, I am taking a seat at the table. I am bringing my main character energy here. I think this is where so many women struggle when it comes to dealing with their in laws and especially with their mother in law. Daughters in law are either put in the victim role or made out to be the villain. They're the scapegoat, they're the problem. And when they set boundaries, they're not viewed as trying to hold people together. They're viewed as trying to separate families. When she says I am saying no to a death by a thousand paper cuts, or I'm saying no to growing resentful, exhausted. So I have no energy for my own kids and I have to look after my own family. But she becomes the problem and on top of this is that then her and her husband. So many of the women I work with are not on the same page, which causes more problems in the marriage and then navigating things with the in laws. So I Am Sherlocked has turned into this viral moment. People are quoting her, they're analyzing her tone, they're even using Sherlocked as a verb. And I think it's just this authenticity that we crave, but it's also this sense of understanding what it's like to feel tension in this dynamic and to do something different. She is showing us what it means to sit in that discomfort rather than just continuing to play the good girl role. Because here's what so many people do. They show up to that event. They have anger towards their husband, but they cut the cake. But they host the thing. They clean all of it up. They're there, they're taking on all the things. And at the end of it, she feels angry, resentful, and exhausted. And I am. Sherlock said, I am not doing that. And she did not engage in any of it. She accepted that it was happening. If I were to speculate, like, I don't know her or her family, but I am speculating that. And I know because some people would say, well, why would you let it happen? Just say no. And oftentimes, maybe there's a conflict between partners, but oftentimes we say yes to these things and because of our values. But that just because you say yes to this family thing happening doesn't mean you have to own all of the responsibility for this. And this is just so powerful to see how one person's story can impact the other. Okay, I want to make this practical, but I also want you to know my book is coming out on November 4th, and I'm giving you step by step in my vault method. That's five steps for you to navigate your in laws. Because I can tell you this is not just a happening in Ottawa thing. This is all over Canada, this is all over North America. This is in every country. I've worked with somebody in each continent to tell me that they are struggling with their in law in some way. And that's where this book is really coming into play. It's going to help you learn to be a solid team and do something different. So let's, let's do this kind of teachable piece here. I want you to know that healthy boundaries don't always have this plan ahead of time. They don't unfold clearly as you wish them to. But one of the most important things that you hold in mind is that you are looking after what you are willing or not willing to do. Boundaries are not about keeping people out. It's about having a door, a gate. I love the analogy of a gate of you deciding what you're going to let in and what you're going to let out. And I think there's this really powerful piece here where we can start with something small. And it could be in any moment where you say, I can't do that, right?
Now where you pause before you say.
Something and you don't have to explain every decision and that really remembering boundaries are about building relationships. But when you don't have boundaries, you will breed resentment, anger, frustration, and not closeness. So as I reflected on this, I am Sherlocked isn't just a viral moment. And I think what she's doing is she's holding a mirror up for us, for our collective exhaustion. The this part of us that's being tired of being the fixer, the pleaser, the peacekeeper, the good girl. We're not going out and being angry and rude and disrespectful, but we want to feel different. And we don't want to keep exhausting ourselves trying to live our lives. So here's your reflection question for today. Where in your life do you wish you could Sherlock someone not to punish, but to protect your peace? And I just want you to remember that someone. Setting boundaries is rarely about control. It's about choosing yourself without abandoning your compassion. If today's conversation resonated with you, don't forget to like and subscribe. And be sure to pre order my book. You, your husband and his mother. See you next time.
