Frédéric Mazzella - De la NASA à la success story BlaBlaCar !

In this French‑language interview, Frédéric Mazzella recounts his journey from a physics‑focused education at École Normale Supérieure and a research stint at NASA/Stanford, through a series of early tech jobs, to the spontaneous insight on the A10 highway in 2004 that sparked the idea of a car‑pooling marketplace. He describes the very first prototype built on a shared hosting server, the initial naming of the service as Commuto (from the Latin commutare), the purchase of the domain covoiturage.fr, and the rapid recruitment of a small technical team (Damien, Francis, Nicolas). He explains the six business‑model experiments he ran (ad‑based, subscription, B2B platform sales, phone‑bridge, event‑specific platforms) and how only the online reservation and payment model succeeded, leading the team to build an in‑house payment‑service‑provider (PSP) before Stripe/Adyen existed. He details the cancellation and over‑booking spiral that threatened the platform, and how the introduction of mandatory online payment reduced cancellation rates from 35 % to under 2 %. He narrates the fundraising story: early love‑money from friends, a zero‑interest loan from Scientipôle, the pivotal 10‑minute pitch to Ouria Loayon and the Isaïe fund (Jean‑David Chamboridon), the first €1 M round in 2010, subsequent €600 k angel round, a €1.2 M seed, a €10 M Accel round for international expansion, and later €100 M‑€200 M rounds that made BlaBlaCar one of France’s first unicorns. He also shares the naming process – a list of 250 candidates, a hypnagogic moment that birthed “BlaBlaCar”, domain acquisition, and memorability testing that showed the name’s stickiness – and reflects on the brand’s glocal nature (recognised across Europe). Throughout, he draws parallels between scientific research, software development, and chess, emphasizing an iterative, hypothesis‑driven mindset, the importance of recruiting the best talent without ego, and the transition from a solo “one‑man‑orchestra” founder to a “conductor” of a large organization. The interview also touches on his current role as non‑executive chairman, the launch of his new venture DiFT, and broader thoughts on leveraging existing tools versus building new ones.
