Kenny Chapman (the 'blue collar coach') delivers a short Freedom Friday video using the Independence Rock at Colorado National Monument as a metaphor for becoming a 'category of one' in business. He argues that strong cultural 'glue'—team members who are interlocked around core values—helps organizations withstand storms like competition and economic pressure.

Can you become a category of one? Kenny Chapman here, the blue collar coach, Freedom Friday Focus. I want you to think about category one in business today. I want you to think about Independence Rock. We're here on the Colorado National Monument. I'm visiting some family and friends back where I used to live. And I want you. I don't know if you can really see it, but there's a massive, massive valley across here and they call this Independence Rock. And they drop jeeps up on top with helicopters and shoot commercials and different things. What I want you to think about category one is this rock. Why? Because at one time, this whole thing was connected and it's sandstone and some of it is melded together a little bit better. There's stronger glue in this part of the rock than the rest. It got different weathering. It got different years and years of erosion and different types of things. I want you to think about category of 1 in your business regarding culture. Is your culture standing like a category of one is the glue of your team? Are the who's the ones that are standing with you that are holding together, that are interlocked together? And as we hold because why? We have storms, we have rain, we have wind, the elements come at it, the competition comes at us, the economy comes at us. But categories of one, when it comes to culture that are playing the same game, when the who's are together and mending and helping and keeping the glue of the core values together of the business, now really good things happen and we can last years and years and years, storm after storm after storm. I'm Kenny Chapman, the blue collar coach. You can become a Category 1. Check your culture until we talk. Make it a better than fantastic weekend. See you soon. Cheers.
