Creating Strategic By-Products

Kenny Chapman (the "blue collar coach") explains the concept of "strategic byproducts": positive outcomes (better hires, relationships, leadership, teams) that arise as indirect results of previous challenges, mistakes, or struggles. He uses personal examples—lessons from military service and past relationships—and encourages listeners to embrace challenges, take risks, and create strategic byproducts in their own business and life.

Hey, my friend, Kenny Chapman here, the blue collar coach coming to you from the Sonoran Desert just outside of Tucson, Arizona, as we continue the Chapman coaching and training trip 2016. On our way to Phoenix tomorrow to begin the wrap up of this trip. But today I want to talk to you about strategic byproducts. One of my mentors and friends, Dan Sullivan, operates a company called the Strategic Coach, talks about this concept. So I want you to think about strategic byproducts. What does that mean? Well, think about that great team member that you have, possibly that great manager that you have right now that is actually a strategic byproduct of the person that you had to become because you made some bad hires, because you employed some poor managers, because you weren't ready to lead at the level that you needed to. And so therefore, you had to part ways, you had to fire people, you had to move on, and now you end up in a better situation. Perhaps it's a marriage that you had to go through to learn more about yourself, to see what type of a partner you really wanted to have in life. Now you're happily married with an amazing situation, and that's actually a strategic byproduct of something that you did. Now, this shows up in all different areas of your business and your life. I want you to think about your company. What are some of the things that you do really well now, that came from challenges, that came from struggle, that came from being stuck. See, one of the things I work with my coaching group, the Titanium Club, about is getting unstuck. We all have things we're doing well. We have things that we're challenged at. We. But the things we do well often are byproducts of being challenged first. So embrace those challenges. The lovely Christy and I just spent the night in El Paso, Texas. The night before last night. Haven't been to el Paso in 24 years. The time that I saw that looking in my rear view mirror, seeing Fort Bliss when I got out of the army in 1992, I said, I don't think I'll ever come back here. But the way that the route on our trip had it and we ended up having an overnight. So I showed Christie around El Paso. I got to see some things and it hit me and I went, wow. My life today, the leadership skills I have, the team that I've built, the relationships that I have, the coach that I've become, has all been a strategic byproduct of my time in the military. Now think about your own life. Think about your own business. What are areas right now where you can create strategic byproducts? What are some actions that you need to take? Some things that you need to get off your butt and go do? Implement. Take a risk, take a challenge to create your next level. It's waiting for you. Go get it. I'm Kenny Chapman. Until we talk again, have a better than fantastic week and I'll see you real soon.
