Deliver the Promise!

Kenny Chapman explains why businesses must deliver on what they promise. He walks through a tree-removal job gone wrong: missed windows, broken equipment, and a truck left in his yard. Companies need to train staff and actually follow through on their processes.

Hey, everybody, Kenny Chapman here, the blue collar coach, coming to you with this week's version video version of Freedom Friday Focus. Now, this week, I'm talking about promises. I'm talking about delivering promises. I'm talking about doing what you say you're going to do. And I want to bring this to our attention because it's been busy season for a lot of people, and we can let up, we can kind of let our guard down when it comes to delivering everything that we want to deliver. So what does that mean, delivering the promise that means anything that you say, anything that you've said in messaging, when it comes to your brand, your operation, your goods, your products, your services, your warranties, everything that you do, you've got to put it out there and then deliver it, as you say, not just to get into a job. We're judged by the entire experience, by our customers. And they deserve the very best. They deserve our very best. They deserve to get the service that they're investing in. And so we need to be mindful of these things and just bring it back once in a while and make sure that our. Our training is designed that way. Our company training, that's our mission. It's our culture. It's who we are. It's what we represent. Lovely. Christy and I just built this new home, and we've got a bunch of landscaping we've got to figure out and kind of get dialed in. But the place we had to start was getting some things cleared out. We've got an open area in the back with a lot of trees and wooded area back there. And we needed some cleanup. We needed a couple trees removed and some brush hauled off and different things like that, quite a bit of work needed to take place. So I didn't look in the phone book. First off, even though all the money I've invested in yellow pages over the years, I was at my computer and I just looked it up online. And so, okay, first company, something that I had name recognition with. I'd actually heard of this tree company before. So I gave them a call, and guess what I got? An answering machine. Yeah, that's right. And this was last week, ladies and gentlemen. This is June of 2014. I got an answering machine. Check that right there. Okay, so what do I do? I leave a message and wait for them to call me back. Well, I did leave a message, but then I did what most people do and I scrolled on down that Google listing and I found another company that looked good. I liked their website. I called them. They Said they could give us an estimate that afternoon. I liked the estimate. He said he could start the next day. I like the timing. Let's go. Next day shows up 8am nobody. 9am nobody. 10am nobody. Nobody even showed up until 11 o'. Clock. I had called and had to leave a message. 11:00 clock they finally get there. Okay, fine, whatever. They're here, I want it done. They can't get their bobcat started. The skid steer won't start on the, on the back of the trailer. So they fought with that. They didn't even start until like 2:30 in the afternoon or something like that. Day one of a two day project. Now let's kind of continue through. The only point I want to make is that you've got to deliver it all the way through. The work they did, I'm really happy with. They cleared it out. These guys worked really, really hard. Kind of a tough job. I'm really happy with the work. But what I'm not happy with is the fact that I've got a broken down dump truck still in my backyard and this work was to be completed six days ago. Six days ago. I've still got a broken down truck in my yard. No follow up phone calls, no nothing. That's an issue. We've got to be mindful of those things. So that's a blatant example I want to share with you this week. But I want you to think about where are the little areas this can show up for you and your company with your customers. Make sure you focus on delivering the process. Ladies and gentlemen. And good things always happen. I'm Kenny Chapman, the blue collar coach. Until we talk again, have a better than fantastic week. I'll see you next time.
