Disconnect to Connect?

Kenny Chapman argues that constant connectivity harms relationships and creativity. He advocates putting your phone down and taking real time with family to connect more deeply, using his vacation in Cancun and a racehorse metaphor to show why rest matters.

Hey, my friend Kenny Chapman here, the blue collar coach, coming to you with a quick message from vacation. I'm actually in Cancun at the Hyatt Zalata this week and spending some just quality downtime. I want to talk to you about disconnecting in order to connect. See, we're taught in this whole economy of scale in our minds, the businesses that we run, the people that we lead, the thoughts that we provoke, everything has to be on all the time. I've got to be connected. I've got to be connected. I've got to know what's going on. Got to ch. Got to see social media, got to make sure we get every single email, every minute of every day. And that's not true. You need to disconnect once in a while. That's what we've done this week. Lovely Christy and I are down here just hanging out. We're connecting in our relationship, we're connecting with ourselves. We're opening some free space in our minds in order to allow those creative thoughts to come. Once we get back to what we do, we'll be better off for each other, we'll be better off for ourselves, we'll be better off for our clients. But it's not easy, right? We're not taught that it's okay to disconnect this. So I'm not advocating that you've got to leave the country. I'm not saying that you even have to go on vacation. But I'm asking you just to take a moment once in a while. Put the phone down, turn it off, take a Sunday off and connect with your spouse, be with your children, like really be with them, be present with them. We walk around this amazing resort and I see so many people just non stop on their phones, on their phones, on their phones. And we've got this right here. What are we doing? See, that's, that's kind of the confusion of the mind here, playing games on us that I'm so important, I must be connected all the time. Not true. Sometimes you need to disconnect in order to connect. Think about yourself, my friend, as a thoroughbred racehorse. Let's say that you had, you owned one of these horses that has the opportunity to perhaps win the Triple Crown. How are you going to treat that horse? Are you going to run it all day long, every day? I don't think so. Right. You're going to, you're not going to drug it up on caffeine and alcohol and expect it to go get great results. Why are you any different pay attention and take care of yourself and open some space for your mind. Therefore, you can create more of what you desire and deserve. I'm Kenny Chapman, the blue collar coach. Until we talk again, my friend. Have a better than fantastic week and I'll see you once I get stateside.
