Handles and Triggers

Kenny Chapman explains Mary Morrissey's "handles and triggers" technique: use everyday objects like car doors and drawers as reminders to check how you're handling each moment. Small conscious choices compound into a better year.

Hey, my friend Kenny Chapman here, the blue collar coach, coming to you with a weekly message about handles and triggers. See, we're already a few days into 2016, and I'm sure you've done some reflection. Hopefully you've learned what you could from the areas you want to improve in your life and business from the last 12 months. And hopefully you've reinforced some of those positive things that you did. The good things, the strategies that worked, the things that felt good, that made sense. Reinforcing those to bring them forward into 2016 and then burn the boat. My friends done. 15 is gone over. Lessons to be brought forward. Nothing to dwell on, no negativity to hang to. It's 2016, so I want to share a quick strategy with you. A friend of mine, Mary Morrissey, talks about, and that is handles and triggers. And see, one of the things that we know is we've got to be conscious in our lives. We all talk about making 2016. Personally, I want this to be your best year ever in every major category of your life and business. I want that for you. I want you to do the work. I've talked about strategies. I've talked about ways that you can improve your situation and improve your life and business and enhance the team members and the vendors and the people around you. You're just enriching those relationships, all areas. Right? Well, here's the thing, though. You can't make your year better. You can't make a month better. You can't even have one great day. You only have a moment at a time, right? So what I want you to do is think about the moments, because the moments make the hours and then the days and weeks and months. And ultimately we'll be having a different conversation in early 2017. Talking about your best year ever, I hope, anyway. Okay, so here's a quick strategy. I'm on my way to the airport to go work with one of our Titanium clients for a few days, but I wanted to land this full. You first, before I go. So triggers and handles, handles and triggers. So I want you to think about how many times during a day you open a door handle. Maybe it's the handle on your car. Maybe it's opening the door to your office. Maybe it's a handle on a cabinet. It's a drawer. It's whatever. There's all kinds of different handles. Right? Well, my friend Mary talks about the fact of using that as a trigger to draw you into your conscious awareness and say, how am I performing right now if I'm at the office and I'm in the break room, and I reach for the the cabinet handle to get creamer for my coffee. Instant trigger. How am I handling my situation today? How am I handling myself? How am I handling my team? How am I handling my conscious awareness? Because I need to be conscious in order to create my positive life and business moment by moment. Think about it. The next time you reach out, you go open the drawer on your desk as I sit at mine here today. Whatever. There's a different kind of handle. Use that to get present, to get clear, so you can create the best moments of your life in 2016, therefore, making it the greatest year of your life. I'm Kenny Chapman, the blue collar coach. Until we talk again, have a better than fantastic day, and I hope to see you soon.
