How's Your Legacy?

Kenny Chapman, the blue collar coach, films from St. Andrews Golf Course in Scotland and asks what legacy you're building. He contrasts golf's centuries-old preservation with short-term business thinking, arguing that how you treat your team, provide for your family, and serve customers is what people will actually remember.

Hey, everybody, Kenny Chapman here, the blue collar coach, coming to you live this week from St. Andrew's Golf course here in Scotland. And you know, I talked about being so inspired when I'm in countries like this and see all of the history and what has gone on. And today we've been taking a tour around Edinburgh and then coming up here to St. Andrews. Spend a little bit of time and just take this. Now, I want us to think about our businesses for a moment though, because this is where golf was founded and this is where, you know, just a worldwide tradition began. And these guys didn't know that's what they were doing back then. And it's been generation after generation after generation. And talking to local Scots about the game of golf, it's just so highly regarded. Everybody talks about it, everybody wants to play it, it's such a big deal. And so of course, it's a big part of their history. It's a big part of our history now because we've adopted it and adapted and applied certain things, whatever. But what about your legacy? I mean, look at this, look at this back here. This is unbelievable. And it's preserved, it means so much. What about your company? What about what you're doing with your life? Think about legacy for a moment. Think about generation after generation. You know, we've been driving around these parts and looking at castles that are in ruins because of all the wars and you know, they get torn down and they build them up again and then an entire city gets wiped out and they build them up again and then they lose half of their population due to the plague. And then they continue and they go on and on and on and on. And yet sometimes I know I'm guilty of thinking a little bit too short term, a little bit small minded, a little bit about, you know, this much and what we're trying to accomplish. What about the overall, we're going to have good months, we're going to have bad months, we're going to have good years, we're going to have bad years, we're going to have ups, we're going to have downs. That's part of the game that we play, ladies and gentlemen. But where's your focus at? What are you really paying attention to? Okay, so just take this in for a moment and live vicariously through me, if you will. And if you ever do get the opportunity to come over here, I highly suggest. But turn things like this from history into your own company and see where can you really make a difference. How could you leave a mark you don't have to create the invent some new piece of technology or the next way that we're going to do plumbing, heating, air conditioning or electrical. But what can you do that changes somebody's life? How can you take better care of your team members? How can you provide better for your family? How can you kick it up a notch? Where when it comes to customer service, what can be your legacy? I'm Kenny Chapman, the blue collar coach from St. Andrew's golf course. This week. Until we talk again, have a better and fantastic week. I'll see you next time.
