It's Five O'clock Somewhere

Kenny Chapman argues you don't need to wait for vacation to find peace. Build small daily islands of calm: a 10-minute walk, music, reading. Robert Moran moved to Orcas Island after a terminal diagnosis and got healthy again. These tiny breaks improve your mood, your team's morale, and your decisions.

Hey, everybody, Kenny Chapman here, the blue collar coach, your contractor, coach and sales trainer, coming to you live with this week's video version of Freedom Friday. Focus. Today, we're overlooking the beautiful Lake Murray right back behind us outside of Columbia, South Carolina, as I'm on site this week with a phenomenal company helping train technicians and doing our ride along program. So as I shoot this from the house that our client put us up in this week, I want us to think about something which is kind of applicable, even though it's, it's not the article I wrote this week. It's five o' clock somewhere. What does that mean? Of course, the great Jimmy Buffet coined that phrase and wrote the song. And the lake house we're actually staying in has a couple pictures of Jimmy in the house and there's a parrot head thing going on and all that type of stuff for you Jimmy Buffett fans and followers. But this week, it's not about Jimmy Buffet. This is about you. This is about perspective. This is about your mindset. This is about releasing stress, allowing things to happen. You'll see in the written column, I talk about a guy named Robert Moran that founded a state park in Orcas Island, Washington. And this is a guy that was diagnosed with one year to live at the tender age of 48. 48 years old. But then he got, he sold his business, moved to Orcas Island. He's only got a year to live. He might as well go there to die, right? He, because he's been diagnosed, this is it. He's time to check out. And a very interesting thing happened. He began to get healthy. He began to get his energy back. The poison began to leave his body. And all of a sudden, here we go. He lives another 40 some years. He had this phenomenal long life, right, that he was supposed to die in his 40s. Now what changed? Is it because he sold his business? Is it because he built this mansion on Orcas Island? Is it because the serenity that this island brings, which Christy and I got to experience recently, beautiful place. I was able to relax at a great level there. But my challenge is I challenged myself when I was there. So now I want to challenge you. Why do we have to go to a lake, to an island, to a specific place to be able to free this up? This was a physical thing for this man. You guys work way too hard. All of us doing business, and we were doing business our best. We have our plans, we're leading our teams. We got our people. They have their challenges. We take on their challenges. All these things are going and pretty soon my head's about to explode and I no longer enjoy what I do. Therefore, I don't make quality decisions. I don't attract the best team members, clients, vendors, coaches, consultants, help. Whatever it is, this is about us. What's your island? How could you find 10 minutes of an island during your day? Maybe you get out and take a swift walk at lunchtime. Maybe when you're in your car, you just let go of some things and turn up your favorite band. Listen to that. Maybe it's pulling over from the side of the road and getting out a book that you keep in your car and reading 10 pages of a positive personal development piece. Whatever it is, my friends, there's not enough vacations throughout the year for us to count for that next one. Don't live in what I call layover mentality. We live in layover mentality, waiting for the next vacation, Waiting for the next positive thing to happen. Waiting, waiting, waiting. Now is your time. You've got more and I want it. Find your island. Find your serenity. Find a way to release your stress throughout the day. You're going to be a lot happier. Your team's going to be a lot happier. Your customers are going to be a lot happier. You're going to make more money. And guess what? You're going to be a lot more happier. On and on and on. This is a beautiful thing. Find your island. Because here's what I know it's five o' clock somewhere, but no matter what time of the day it is for you, you can have that feeling. It's just a decision here. I'm Kenny Chapman, the blue collar coach coming to you from Lake Murray in South Carolina. Until we talk again, have a better than fantastic week and I'll see you next time.
