Self Coaching for Managers

Kenny Chapman, the "blue collar coach," presents a short Freedom Friday Focus video about accountability and performance tracking for managers and small business owners. He urges managers to practice self-coaching through daily reflection, asking concrete questions about their effectiveness and how they support their teams, and to avoid excuses so they can improve leadership and operational results.

Hey everybody, Kenny Chapman, the blue collar coach, coming to you with this week's video version of Freedom Friday Focus. And this week we're talking about accountability and performance tracking. Coaching, basically self coaching for managers is what I want you to consider this week and think about performance tracking and coaching and training and all the things that we do regarding performance and results is a very, very big part of our success. It's a very big part of our companies and hopefully our lives. ENJ now as owners and managers, we tend to focus on the front line and continue to train and push things and we jump in and we inspect and we look and find out. We do ride alongs to get with our frontline team in the field and see what's happening. How does their behavior show up? How does their attitude show up? How does the training that we've done show up with the customer in the field? Right. So we do this all the time or hopefully you're doing it if you're not. You got some stuff to learn once you get out there, I'll betcha. But nonetheless, we kind of focus on this and what I want us to think about as managers and owners is what about us? Who coaches us? How do we drive our performance? This week I dropped a few simple questions for you to jot down on a three by five card and keep it by your bed or put it in your outlook and pop it up or your Google calendar or whatever you use in iCal. There's all these different variations, right? So you know, it's about you being able to reflect and say how effective have I been this day, week, month, whatever you're reflecting on. Because different projects will have different timelines. I like the daily kind of thing to know what is my influence, what is my input, what is my performance look like on a daily basis? Am I driving these things? So how effective have I been the last day, two days, this week? And you know, based on that, don't use softeners I write about. Oh well, you know, I didn't hit my goal, but we added tech that was sick and the weather wasn't very good. So you know, there's always next week. Well, you don't know if there's always next week, ladies and gentlemen. All we know is what we've got today. And today we need to coach ourselves so we can become better performers, better coaches, better trainers, better managers, better leaders, better operators of the companies that we run. So regardless of where you are, you have room to grow. We tap so little of our potential. It's almost ridiculous. So I'm asking you to reach forward a little bit, to ask yourself some questions as the manager and the coach. How can you become more effective? What does my team need from me that I'm not currently providing? How can I get better to help them get better? It begins and ends with you, as Michael Gerber taught me as an E Myth consultant years ago. Show me a small business owner, give me a mirror, and I'll tell you what the company looks like. I believe in this. We live by it. But I want you to get better. You've got more in you. I know. I want to see it. Where are those results? Until we talk again, have a better than fantastic week, and I'll see you next time.
