self deception

A short YouTube message by Kenny Chapman (the Blue Collar Coach) about self-deception in running a service business. He recounts bringing in a consultant to reveal blind spots, contrasts believing what is not true with refusing to accept truth, and urges leaders to seek coaching, join peer groups, and take action grounded in gratitude and enthusiasm. He frames a company as the sum of its leaders' choices and encourages leaders to reassess beliefs, attraction methods, and daily practices.

Hey everybody, Kenny Chapman here, the blue collar coach coming to you live with a quick message this morning about self deception, about how you look at your business. We talked recently about how you think about things. Well, just recently we had a consultant come into one of our service companies of the two that we own and kind of pull back the sheets and dig into the sock drawer a little bit and look at things. Why? Because even though I'm the Tom McCart consultant of the year winter this year we've got blind spots when it comes to how we operate, when it comes to how we lead, when it comes to how we communicate, how we train, how we affect the people that really make it happen for us. Our frontline team is the backbone of our company. And where are blind spots? You got to have somebody take a look at some of those from a different angle. You've got to get involved in coaching groups, you got to get involved in best practices groups, you've got to get involved with peers and a way to really see what am I missing. So I began reading a book that Robin told me about recently and they talk about self deception and it's been around forever. And it's been said there's two ways to really lie to yourself. Number one is to constantly or a couple ways to be fooled. One is to believe what is not true, right? If we believe what isn't true, then I'm fooling myself also. If I refuse to believe what is true, I'm also fooling myself. So this morning on our mastermind group coaching call, we're going to be talking about massive action as we head into preseason busy time. And with that will come a certain level of belief. And our mastermind group clients are going to respond today based on where they're at and the level of self deception that they have or the level of truth that they're willing to hear. When it comes to your own company, I don't care what your top project list looks like right now. Hopefully you do have a top project list and you're paying attention to the tasks that need to be done on a daily basis. And hopefully your task list is separate on a daily basis than it is from your master task list. And that's a whole other time management conversation that I don't want to get into here today. But I want you to think about what stories are you telling yourself? What are you putting up with? What are you allowing? Your company is a reflection of the decisions you make, where you are today in your life, financially, relationship wise, family, friends, professional education, Whatever that is is simply a sum total of the choices that you've made to this point. Now, here's the great thing. You have an opportunity to choose again. Keep things in perspective. This weekend I got to see the movie American Sniper. Hit me pretty hard as a combat vet, and I didn't see a lot of the things that those guys saw and dealt with. Obviously, my hat's off to our service people, the veterans. What it does to me is really drive gratitude at a whole new level. Now, this morning, I'm talking about two of the six dimensions of change from my book, action and gratitude. I'll even throw enthusiasm in there as well, because you got to have some fun while you're doing this. So stop deceiving yourself that this business is harder than it's supposed to be. Stop deceiving yourself that there's no good people out there that want to work with you. Maybe we need to look at ourselves. Maybe we need to change how we're attracting. What's the magnet that we've got on our service trucks on the front of our building? What's the field of magnetivity? Magnetic field, Whatever that is drawing people toward us. Guess what it's based on? You. If you're the top leader, if you're on the leadership team, you're the one communicating the message. It's got to feel good for people to want to play your game. Are you listening to things that aren't true? Do you have some beliefs that are formed based on fallacy? You remember when you believed that Santa Claus was real? Hmm? What, are the Santa Clauses showing up your service company? Think about that. I'm Kenny Chapman, the blue collar coach. Until we talk again, have a better than fantastic week. Don't deceive yourself and listen to the truth. I'll talk to you soon.
