Technicians are the Salt of the Earth

Kenny Chapman (the Blue Collar Coach) speaks from a client site about the importance of technicians in HVAC/plumbing/electrical companies. He argues technicians are honest, capable of connecting with customers, but need guidance and training; investing in their development (including paying wages for training/meetings) improves company ROI. He illustrates the point with an anecdote about a technician who adopted his "power of because" technique.

Hey everybody, Kenny Chapman, the blue collar coach, coming to you live from Montana where I'm on site with a client, this great H VAC plumbing and electrical company where I'm doing my training and ride along program. And this week I want to talk to you about the fact that the technicians are the salt of the earth. Man, these guys, they really make our companies work. And so you can see I'm still wearing my, my Under Armour gear from being out in a cold Montana day. Although it was pretty nice out today when I'm shooting this video here on Thursday night. And you know, the reality is I see so many companies that get frustrated with their technicians and upset and they don't spend enough time working with them and training them. And it's always their fault. But they need direction. And that's why this week I wanted to talk about the fact that they're the salt of the earth. They're honest. I mean we talk about, oh yeah, there's a bad apple all the time and different things like that. Okay, I get that that can happen. But by and large, overall these guys are honest. They want to do the right thing. They absolutely do. All the technicians that I train all over the country, Australia, Canada, these guys, they really have the interest in really doing what's best. And sometimes they don't understand that doing what's best for a customer means that that customer does need to invest a little bit more than they originally thought in their mind, the customer's mind, that is. Okay, so you really want to understand that these guys have the ability to connect many models. We use technicians and flip to comfort consultants and different things like that. Other companies just have their technician sell. Either way, there has to be a good technician client connection in order to make the sale and close the deal. Making the sale and closing the deal could be the repairs needed, could be replacement of the equipment by the service technician selling it, or it could be getting the comfort advisor or consultant and in the door to have a quality conversation with that customer. So when we think about these things, they are honest. They want to do the right thing. They have the ability to connect. But guess what? They need help. They need help from you. They need guidance from you. Sometimes we think they should just know it all. Well, that's not the case. Had a maintenance technician that was challenging me earlier in the week. This week one of my videos in our monthly training video memberships where we do the done for you training is called the power of because. And I shot an entire technician training video about this and this company actually showed this video. And when I got there earlier this week, he came up and he said, you know, I like your stuff. I'm behind most of what you do. I don't like this power of because thing. And I said, that's okay, you know, tell me more. We had a little conversation about it. Well, tonight, before I left this company, he came to me and said, kenny, let me talk to you for a minute. He said, actually, it clicked to me this morning when you were revisiting that topic live in our shop. And today I went out and I used it and I realized how powerful it was and it opened up a customer's mind. That's what it's all about, ladies and gentlemen. And it takes you to invest in your technicians to help them get better. I'm not saying you need to use our products, our goods, our services or anything. Sure, we run the gamut with what we have to offer you. I'm saying you need to invest in. This is a time you need to invest in this with their wages of bringing them into meetings. You need to invest in this for yourself to get a better ROI in your company. I'm Kenny Chapman, the blue collar coach. Until next time, have a better than fantastic day and we'll talk to you soon.
