What's the Score?

Short motivational YouTube video by Kenny Chapman (the "blue collar coach") urging businesses to "keep score" by tracking, posting, and sharing key performance metrics with their teams. Uses sports-score analogies and a Mastermind/dinner example (Mount Vernon, WA; CPI Plumbing) to argue that transparency and measurement drive ownership and improved results.

Hey everybody, Kenny Chapman here, the blue collar coach, your partner in profitability coming to you this month. We're talking about keeping score. And one of the things that blows my mind is I'll run across contractors and business people that can name every stat of their favorite player or their favorite team. And they have ESPN notes that come up on their phone and things that look at what this person did, look at what this ball player did, or look at how many saves this person had in hockey, what the on base percentage was for this particular baseball player. And then when we ask questions about closing rate and call percentage and certain statistics within the company, they just go, what, what are you, what are you talking about? You've got to keep score. As a die hard San Diego Chargers fan, there's certain times when I've looked at that scoreboard and went, oh, why don't they turn that off, please shut off the score. But they don't because the game still has to be played until the final snap. Now the same thing is true with our companies. Regardless of what the score is, we need to know the score, we need to break down the score, we need to look at what that means. And not only do we need to keep the score, we need to post the score, we need to share with our team what that means to the score. So we're here in Mount Vernon, Washington tonight with our private Mastermind dinner before our live look event. Got all of our Mastermind clients up here having a great time, we're barbecuing, having a good time at Kelly's house. And one of the things that's so cool about our LiveLook event is it's about keeping score. It's about business planning. CPI Plumbing does a great job of tracking numbers and paying attention and posting and using this information to drive the business. That's what it's about. I don't want you to track just to track. I want you to track to understand what's going on, how's the movement, how can we do something? Whether you're $100,000 company or 100 million dollar company, you've got to know the score. Only good business company or only good businesses really understand this. And get this, don't just track it, don't keep it behind some golden veil to where everybody wonders what the score is. You've got to post it. Because when you post it now, people can look at it and go, yeah, I guess I own that result. I guess that was mine. I guess that's the thing. And that's one of the things about our mastermind group that we just pulled together with. All together help each other keep getting better. To improve that score, I'm Kenny Chapman. Until we talk again, have a better than fantastic month and I'll see you next time.
