The Hiring Manager's Critical Role in Recruiting the Strongest Talent

Lou Adler argues that hiring the best talent is the single most important responsibility of managers and that hiring managers must own and be measured on hiring outcomes (quality of hires, turnover, promotions, job satisfaction). He recommends defining every role as 5–6 performance objectives with a customized employee value proposition, partnering closely with recruiters (who act as sales reps), actively engaging in exploratory conversations with passive candidates, conducting multiple in-depth interviews, and participating in offer-closing and pre-start follow-ups. Adler warns against narrow skills/experience-based job descriptions because they cap quality, reduce diversity, and exclude high-potential candidates.
