Entrepreneurs often give away huge equity stakes to partners they don't fully trust, driven by fear and self-doubt. The speaker warns that handing over 50/50 ownership without a clear need for the partner's expertise can sabotage the business and leave the founder hostage to someone else's performance.

A real problem that I see with a lot of entrepreneurs is that they outsource their confidence. And what that means is when they're founding a business or when they're looking to scale that business, they know what they don't know. And so they go out and find somebody and place all of the growth and all of the metrics on that person. And oftentimes they don't actually know what they need. They find someone who's underqualified or who only knows as much as they do, and that ends up sabotaging the business. And then they outsource their decisions to that person. And in many ways, that person can end up holding them hostage. And I get it. Starting a company is incredibly scary, but going out and giving 50% of your equity to someone else is not necessarily the right decision. I've seen this happen across multiple people, multiple clients. They end up having a 50/50 partnership when really they had everything they needed from the get-go. They just didn't have the confidence that they would be able to execute on that, so they bring someone else along for the ride.
