Success triggers two fears: failure and the judgment that comes with standing out. Gay Hendricks calls this the upper-limit problem, the invisible barrier we hit when approaching our real potential. Recognizing it lets you break through.

Success requires hard work. We're all familiar with the fear of failure. Hey, I'm going to start this company. I'm going to work my ass off so that I don't fail publicly. Fear of success. I'll do just enough to get by. I'll be just successful enough, but I'm not going to really swing for the fences because I'm afraid of that judgment. We are really tied to our tribe and we're terrified of being an outcast. And the more we separate ourselves from the people that we came up with, the more scary that feeling is and the more we have to face that fear of success. Gay Hendricks has a great book about this called The Big Leap. When we start to bump up against some of limits of our success, that we take that, that leap, to use his language, to the other side. It really is in identifying where that limit is coming from.
