A man moved his family and business from Midland, Texas to Colorado in 2016, betting his life on a place with better outdoor culture. He found that people there bond over skiing and hiking instead of job titles, and it changed how he worked and connected with others.

My move to Colorado in 2016 was a giant risk. I was in the oil and gas business and I was living in Midland, which is the oil and gas capital of Texas, if not the world. It was a tremendous risk for me to uproot my entire family and my business and move to Colorado. But I can tell you it's one of the best investments that I've ever made in myself because I have access to the outdoors, which is incredibly important. I was fortunate enough to be able to build the home of my dreams. It's become a gathering place for my social circle. I host entrepreneur happy hours here, and I've really been able to design design a life that I love. One of the things I love about Colorado is that because everyone is so outdoor-focused here, when I meet new people, they don't ask, 'What do you do?' They're not asking about what my business is. They ask like, 'Hey, what are you into? Do you like skiing? You like snowboarding? Are you into mountain biking?' A lot of times I'll make friends and we'll connect and we'll go ride mountain bikes, and I'll have no idea what they do for work for a really long time until that friendship goes to the next level. I think it's fairly unique to this area. Moving to a place that really inspires me to create from a different lens, I think, has been just such an impactful decision in my life. If you're not happy with where you're living, I highly recommend that you create a list of questions and go, hey, what would it look like for me to move to somewhere that really inspires me to create something from a different place?
