A personal reflection on the relationship between food, pornography, and coping mechanisms. The speaker describes using food and later porn as substitute coping behaviors for unmanaged emotions and shame, notes their neurological similarity, and emphasizes addressing root causes (trauma, emotions) to heal addictive acting-out across behaviors (food, porn, shopping).
For me, my first love was food. I was alone a lot when I was little, and I didn't know how to deal with my big feelings. And so I would eat, and I would hide food and sneak food. And then when I found porn, it became the replacement for it. So it really did kind of become a new coping mechanism for me. And because I did have so much shame about it, it was my secret for 10 years. Food and sex create the same. Same reaction in the brain. And so if you have somebody who struggles with food and then finds porn, there is kind of a transference that can happen. And then when you're in recovery from porn, finally you go back to having food issues a lot of the time as well. So there is kind of this tension of, like, going back and forth and really get. And that's why it's so important to get to the root of why you're acting out, Whether it's with food, whether it's with porn, whether it's shopping. You know, there could be all kinds of things. The root is the same. Find out what that is and fix it and heal it.
