A short YouTube monologue by Nick Stumbo advocating for parenting that allows children freedom of self-expression. The speaker shares a personal anecdote about letting young children dress as they wish (e.g., swim trunks and rubber boots in snow) to foster healthy emotional expression and autonomy.
How many of you in here are parents? You're parents and you've told your kids. I remember that with my boys. My sons are all adults, and I'll talk about them a little bit more today. But I remember telling them when they were maybe three or four years old, okay, go get ready to go. We're gonna go. And my son would come out in his swim trunks, in his rubber boots, wearing some funky T shirt, and it's snowing outside. And so what do you do as a parent? Do you let them go out like that? Yeah. You do? Absolutely. Good job. That was the right answer. Absolutely. Because as parents, we think, oh, my gosh, I can't take my kid to church like this in his rubber boots. But you know what? He's expressing himself, and that's awesome. Who even cares if he wears rubber boots? But you let them have that type of control so that they can express their emotions, so that they can learn in a healthy environment that. That this is okay.
