Nick Stumbo (speaker) argues that inviting someone into your personal struggle — despite the risk they may refuse — lightens the emotional load. He emphasizes that responsibility and consequences remain personal, but sharing the struggle makes the journey easier because others can carry part of the weight.
Even just practically. I think that when we invite someone into our struggle and we take that step and we risk that somebody may be saying no, they don't want to walk this with us. But being willing to put it out there, there's something about that that just kind of lightens the load, too, that makes I know that that's happened with me when I have something that I'm struggling with and I bring it to a friend, and now I don't have to carry it all by myself. It's to still my responsibility, and the consequences are still mine. But now it's something that, as much as I would have loved to keep it myself, it's going to be an easier journey because I've invited somebody in, and now somebody else is going to, in some way, carry part of the weight with me.
