Just be yourself

Amy Guy tells nail technicians and small business owners to stop overproducing and just film their actual work: client sessions, cleaning, personal routines. She shows how to add hooks and calls-to-action, then track what drives business results.

Now, I love this lesson because it is designed to just help you to authentically show up as yourself. And I'm going to teach you a little something here that is really going to help when it comes to procrastinating, when it comes to not knowing what's opposed, when it comes to holding yourself back from posting or worrying what other people might think. I know that putting yourself out there sometimes on social media or in your marketing or putting your business out there can sometimes feel a little bit daunting and a little bit overwhelming. So this lesson is designed to just take the pressure off all of those things and really just put it back onto the emphasis that what you're doing is something amazing. And it actually is a disservice if people don't know about you and what it is that you offer. So just be yourself, document, don't create. I mentioned this earlier, but something that's really important to know about marketing, about social media is that no one really wants to be sold to when they are scrolling Instagram, when they are, you know, browsing through Facebook, when they are, you know, looking on Google. Yes, they want to know what's out there. They don't necessarily want to be sold to, especially on social media. We don't open Instagram of a morning when we wake up and go, oh, I'm going to have a little scroll on Instagram to see what stuff people can sell me. We go on there to fill time. We want to be entertained, educated or inspired when we are looking through content. But the fact that no one wants to be sold to on Instagram isn't a bad thing. In fact, it actually makes it so much easier for you because all you need to do is create a feeling in your content, one that is authentic, genuine and reflective of your brand. And guess how you do that? You do it by being yourself, which is the easiest thing for you to do in the world because no one else can be you like you can. You have a huge advantage. So what I would love for you to start doing from now is not putting so much pressure on to create content. Content creation can feel like a pain. Content creation can feel so time consuming. It can feel like a chore. It can feel like the thing that you just don't want to do, but you're telling yourself you have to do. Actually, you don't. You are a nail technician or an educator or whatever it is that you're doing in your business right now, a business owner. You are already doing things every single day, day in, day out, that Other people that ideal clients, ideal audiences would find so interesting. So all you need to do is set up your phone as you are doing it. And that is what I have taught our members to do. So many of them now are doing it and the results that they are seeing off the back of it is crazy. So I've pulled out some of our members content as examples to show you how simple this can be as a nail technician, I mean, you know, how many sets of nails have you done so far? You might have done tens, you might have done hundreds, you might have done thousands. So for you, it might be the 29,000th set of nails you have done in your lifetime. However, for somebody who is potentially just, I don't know, let's say you're an educator. For someone who is clocking off at the end of a day in their 9 to 5 office job, absolutely hating what they are doing, feeling fed up, feeling unfulfilled, feeling like they've just spent a day doing in hell. In hell. Because some people do feel like that in their jobs, right? And they get home, they're feeling fed up, they go on Instagram and they see you doing something that is just a standard part of your day, like closing up your salon at the end of the day, wiping down your shelves, like you can see Rachel doing in this here, wiping down your shelves, cleaning all of your products to you. You've done this so many times, but you're new to the person who would love to be in your shoes. They see that as so inspiring. So actually, one reel showing you cleaning down your workstation at the end of the day and closing up your salon could inspire your next student to want a book with you. Because they see that and they think, I wish I was doing that. That looks so fun compared to what I do. Or even a set of nails. It might be the 29,000 set of nails, but it might be the first time someone's actually seen that process being done. So you never know what is interesting to other people. And you can't assume that just because it's not as interesting to you anymore. It's not to other people. And then it wasn't when you first started out, because I imagine it was. And it doesn't just need to be nail related either. Like there's so many examples of things you're doing as a part of your day that could be the background of a reel, which what matters more is the hook that you put on the top of it. So it could be you literally walking to your car or packing your bag in the morning, or putting your lunch into your bag, or doing your skincare like you can see Mia doing in the middle one here. Whatever it is that you're doing, it doesn't really matter. What matters is the messaging behind that piece of content. What does it say? Who are you reaching out to? So I'll go through each of these. The first one here, it's a free therapy with all appointments. And then there's a picture of Nicola again from Sanctuary 12, doing what she does best. Sat at her nail desk having the lovely chats with her clients and doing a set of nails. She literally just had to put her phone in a tripod and press record to get this piece of content. She didn't need to do anything out of the ordinary, she was doing it anyway. She just let the camera watch it as she did. So what you can start doing is set your camera up behind you, let it run for an hour. At the end, crop out the little bits that you thought were quite interesting, delete the rest. If you found that you did record for an hour and nothing really happened that you wanted to post or it was not the right angle or the lighting wasn't right, no problem, delete it. Record the next client that comes in. Like. Remember, marketing is a process. It's ongoing, something you get to do all the time. It's finding new ways to say the same thing over and over again. Another one. Nails by ears. So she was doing her own nails. A chore that we all don't necessarily love, but all quite often do. Unless you're like me and start going to other nail techs to get your nails done. Life Hack definitely recommend it, but we've all done our own nails many a time, so instead of it being a chore, is has set her camera up above her in a great angle where you can see exactly what she's doing. And now it's become a process. Reel of hair, doing her own nails. Mia done her skincare at the start of the day and put. Sometimes it's the little things that we take for granted and then put a load of things over the top that feels inspiring to other people. Doesn't really matter what she's doing in the video. People probably won't even pay that much attention to the video. People are reading the text more so listening to what you've got to say, but you've hooked them in with that little bit of content that features you or something interesting. Another one, Mia. So Mia does really great step by steps of her processes on her page. She doesn't do anything different. She. She just sets her camera up above her or her iPhone up above her as she's doing her client sets. She's doing the nails anyway. She might as well be documenting what she's doing so that she can have a bit of content off the back of it. Then all she does is films a voiceover at the end. And we teach you how to do voiceovers in one of our masterclasses within this module. So nice and easy. And lastly, our lovely Rachel cleaning down her shelves and doing a deep clean of her salon. Something that is so, so boring to most of us. But to other people, they would love to have that luxury of running their own business, of being on their own time, of being able to wipe something down at the end of the day, because you're so passionate about it, you care, you want it to look and feel good. So it's inspiring to other people. It's also inspiring to people who want to actually just get the nails done by you. If you're a nail technician and you want to gain new clients, them watching you do little things like this in your salon, just like fly on the wall content, they feel like they know you, they feel like they can trust you. They're more likely to book in. Now your market and strategy will change along with your goals. And as your goals change, you might want to change your target audience. So, for example, if you're a nail technician and you're transitioning into becoming an educator, then your marketing strategy is going to change because your goals have changed and your target audience is going to change as well. You're no longer just wanting to attract clients, you want to attract students too. So that is why your market and strategy will always be a process. A process of testing, adapting and reflecting. And to reflect, you need data. So hoping all of this is landing really well with you, stay close to what your goals are. Your goals might also change. Just depends on new milestones. So you might be working in somebody else's salon, then all of a sudden you might open your own home studio. So the goal might change if the goal changes, maybe even your target client has changed because you're no longer in the same environment. You no longer might be offering that same treatment or service that you were before. Maybe it's got a whole new spin on it now. Maybe it's got a whole new value to it. So how can we start talking to the people that also value that in your content? Keep creating content. Keep looking at what works and what doesn't. So to recap, before I head into understanding your data, you want to underpin your business goal and therefore your marketing goal. Remember, two different things. Whatever your business goal is will then lead you to how you need to use your marketing to get you to that business goal. That marketing goal will also lead you to understanding your target audience. Who are we speaking to and what do we want them to know about us based on who they are and getting really specific on those clients avatars and actually giving them a name, visualizing them as human beings. And you can then start to think about what types of content is authentic to me and also authentic to them. What would resonate with at least one of my ideal client avatars? Remember, not every piece of content needs to resonate with all avatars. If one piece of content fits one avatar, that's great. So a piece of content about being a mom would relate to Emma, but not necessarily Chloe or Michael. That's okay, we post it anyway, because if Emma does see it, she's going to get bought in straight away. So off the back of our target audience, we can then choose our content themes of the things that we enjoy and that our ideal clients enjoy. And off the back of our themes, we always know what we are going to post about. Once we know what we're going to post about, we give each of our pieces of content an engaging hook. Something at the beginning, whether it be visual, whether it be verbal, but something to hook in that viewer at the first few seconds. You want to add your call to action to every piece of content. So once you've reeled that customer in, they then know where to go next. You tell them what you want them to do based on your goal. If you're trying to grow clients, we want to tell them to go straight to our booking system. If you are trying to increase your engagement because you want to monetize your content, tell them to save the post, tell them to comment, tell the customer what to do at the end, and then document as you go. When you are posting your content, you also want to make sure that you pass the scroll test. If this was someone else's piece of content, would I stop to look at it? If I wouldn't, why not? Can we tweak it? Can we change it? If not, post it anyway. See what the data tells you. And lastly, you want to make sure you are reviewing and amending accordingly, which leads me on to understanding your data, which I'm going to cover next in the next lesson.
