Mauricio Sulaimán recounts his father José Suleimán's recovery from intensive care after Pope Francis blessed a certificate with his signature. Muhammad Ali, Sugar Leonard, Mike Tyson, and Carlos Slim visited during his father's gradual return to movement, sight, and speech.
And Maravia Martinez, when he was with the Pope, said, listen, I want to make a request. My president Jose Suleiman, passed this and this and this. So the Pope said, let's see. Do you have any of his clothes? No. He brought a certificate, the one with the belt that had my father's signature. Oh, lend it to me. So he prayed, folded it, prayed again, folded it again. I mean, if he moved his hand, it was an incredible celebration. Then his foot. Incredibly, a couple of weeks went by and he was perfect. For two months he was already out of the hospital. No, no, no, he never left intensive care. He never left because he was connected to everything. He couldn't drink water. It was a very complicated process. But during those two months that Pope Francis gave him to us, he was able to say goodbye to everyone. Muhammad Ali went to see him in a wheelchair, all of him suffering from terrible Parkinson's. He spent an afternoon with my dad, Sugar. Leonard Duran Chavez several times, Mike Tyson, Don King, obviously, but especially his family. Engineer Carlos Slim went to see him one afternoon. He was there for an hour, talking to him. And then all that time seeing his grandchildren, his children, his wife, he obviously realized that he was already normal, perfect. He realized that his path was not.
