Eugenio Baeza discusses why diversification matters across agriculture, real estate, and finance. He covers pecan and walnut production in Chihuahua, how sofoms work, and automation's role in modern farming and factories.
Yes. You can find many things online, but not about walnuts. So Chihuahua is the state with the largest production of pecans in the world. And we are the largest producer in Chihuahua. That would make us the largest producer of pecans in the world. And we started planting 3,000 hectares of walnut trees. Now we are walnut growers. And then we started looking at all the properties that we had.
Right.
That we had accumulated. Well, we created a real estate agency, thinking that real estate agencies can't be found online either.
Right.
And the issue of the sofra, the issue of Teletopas, right. They come up with this story that when you deposit cash, they withhold, I think, 25 cents for each peso. I don't remember how much it was.
Right.
And you have to go and request it like VAT refunds, which are quite an issue.
Right.
So you have to put a target on your back, right? Well, yes, absolutely. All day long.
Right.
And so we don't cause VAT because we do have these little balls, the laser, permanently. So what did we say? How do we avoid requesting a refund from the Treasury? And the way was to create sofom. The sofoms didn't have to report that we created the sofom. That's why we created the sofom. So I'm telling you, you keep running into them, the walnut trees. Well, it's because the ranches came with the acquisition of the chickens. And then how do we extract value from the ranches?
Right.
So how did we create the sof? That's how we created the sof. And even in the areas where you do see technology coming, instead of running away from it, you're riding the wave.
Right.
And they just opened the factory or the plant in La Pieda in Michoacan that's completely automated. Tell me about it. Well, look, if you notice.
