A designer walks through their process before touching Figma: start with a kickoff to clarify the problem and users, plan timelines and research needs, do competitive research and sketches, then review with the team before moving to high-fidelity design.

What's your first step when starting a new design project? The first step I take is usually some kind of kickoff or some kind of like discussion where I try to slow everyone down, keep them from rushing into immediately, you know, designing and ask why we're doing this. Like what, what problem are we trying to solve? Who is it that we're actually trying to target? Where is this problem happening? What do we know? What do we not know? These are problems and predispositions. And that way I, we can all align and understand and start figuring it out. And then we also start talking about scheduling. So, okay, when do we want to work on this? How long do we have? Do we have any research prior? Are we going to do any research? You know, so I start talking about planning. Then from there, I'll go look up kind of similar, like after I've kind of had some idea of what we're thinking, what we're talking about, and maybe there's some proposed solution, uh, I'll start doing some research. I'll look at some competitors. I'll start looking at anything that's gathered. Draw some stuff out, and then we'll meet up, we'll discuss them and see if I missed something, if we're, you know, do we align, does someone else have a different idea, just kind of aligning at that lower fidelity next.
