Starting this app build with a feature breakdown.

A developer breaks down how to plan an app build by listing core features, reviewing competitors, and defining what goes in the first launch. Using a dating app example, he shows how to prioritize features into an MVP and defer nice-to-haves like filtering to ship faster.

Hey everybody, so recently I've been talking to a lot of people about app development and what it takes to build an app. And so I, I wanted to walk people through some of the steps like that it takes to make, to make an app. Now there's a lot of them that are not just building the app. There's design, there's strategy, there's business. And so I want to go through this, this exercise so people that have ideas know the things you have to go through. And so you can see here on the screen, I have, I have just basically a draft. I'm using a platform called Notion, but it's a note-taking app or organization app. And in this, the first step I'm going to do for thinking about this app is think about what's going to be in the app, right? What should the user be able to do? What are some things? Now, I was talking to my brother. We have an idea for like a dating app. I can make that, so I'm going to use that as an example to, um, walk us through the process. So in this dating app, obviously you need matching, but you know what you need before that? Before you even match, you need a user profile. And what that is, is basically somewhere to save your data, log in, save your data, log out, you know, something that's storing your information. You need Matching, you need, I'm actually gonna call it discovery, chat. We already have the user profile, likes, liked. Yeah, I guess I'm gonna call it likes. And really the titles and names are really arbitrary. Like they don't even matter. You can call them what you want. You probably should describe them. At this point, it's still a brainstorm. Filter, filter, filtering. Sure. And for that, like, that's kind of it. If you want to go in and have more like description, you should, especially if you start working with more people. What else is there? You know, something— these are things you kind of might need to look at. This is where you look at other apps, you look at competitors and see, I like that, I don't like that. Now, after we have this, we would prioritize this list and think, okay, maybe we don't need filtering for the MVP, right? We can build this and then release it. Maybe that is— it's necessary. The more things you have, the longer it takes to build., and that's something to be considered. So this is just like the first step. This is the brainstorming when you're still figuring out your idea, what you want to be there.
