How Expectations Influence Experiences

Ritux explains how user expectations shape experience quality: meet them and you're satisfactory, exceed them and you delight, fall short and you disappoint. The first design priority is understanding what users expect. The second, harder one, is delivering more.

Hey everyone, Ritzy here, and I had a thought and I wanted to share it with you guys. I was taking this leadership course by ThinkHuman, and they introduced this thing that I thought was very interesting. So we've all heard of the Golden Rule, right? Do unto others as you wish to be done to yourself, right? And they said, let me introduce you to the Platinum Rule, and it was treat others how they want to be treated, which was an interesting aspect because it's not how you want to be treated. And in user experience design, like, one of the things we're kind of taught and we understand is that we ourselves as designers are not not specifically the users that we're designing for. So I thought it correlated very well, and then it made me think a little bit more about just how that experience is delivered. And in that scenario, I realized that when you are going into something new, you kind of build an expectation subliminally. You think, okay, I imagine it's gonna look like this, right? And usually when you get to it, it'll either exceed or it'll meet the expectation or be lower than the expectation, something along the lines. And sometimes when you just meet the expectation, it's considered a good thing. If you exceed the expectation, it's a great experience, right? It was like, wow, this was better than I expected. And then if it's below, you're like, ah, this was kind of whack. Like this was not great. So it made me understand like you have the expectation that you start off with. And number one, if you don't understand those expectations, you can't really design or deliver anything great. You're kind of hoping to it. So the first step is to make sure you understand the expectations that, that you're looking to deliver. Secondly, the harder part is innovating, and that's delivering more than the expectation. So that's saying, looking into like the root cause or looking into the core, and instead of just meeting the expectations, you're delivering more value than what is expected. So these are just some thoughts I was having and I wanted to share. I want to start making some more videos like this that are super quick and just some thoughts, just some exploration and some dialogue. So let me know what you guys think and if this made sense, if you like it, if you agree or you don't agree. So until next time, bye.
