Backyard Concert 2018

Hillary hosts a backyard concert in her Bagley-Hopkins home on August 30, 2018, where family and friends perform covers from Journey, Etta James, and musical theatre alongside original songs. The evening is loose and chaotic, full of technical glitches and banter, ending with a group performance of "Glorious" and reflections on community and creativity.

family, but that's because the first year after I got married, I had a little shindig, and so I quietly let it slip for a season. But this will be the second time with my kids, who are exceptional entertainers, far, far outstrip me in entertainment value. So I got them, haha, right? So you don't have to listen to me for 2 hours. You can, you can breathe a sigh of relief because I certainly do.
I do.
Okay, so that's kind of the history behind it for those of you who are new to the Hopkins Bagley Backyard Concert, and I am just gonna start it off with a little Journey. Who likes Journey? Right, okay, good, good. Okay, before we start again, see, this is how this show goes. I stop and start it whenever I choose. So you didn't pay to get entertained this evening, and that's why I get to do that. So another little— I'm gonna give myself an out in that I don't memorize. I rarely, if I can help it, I will choose never to memorize something. So I will consistently look at words, just so you know. And if you make a mistake, I will either stop and start over or we'll just move on.
Again, free entertainment.
Just a small-town girl living in a lonely world. She took the midnight train going anywhere. Just a city boy born and raised in South Detroit. He took the midnight train going —anywhere.
This is the part where you guys do the air guitar, because I don't do that. So Robbie's got one hand going. Anybody else?
I had to hear it.
Oh, he can't be the only one.
Somebody else. Oh.
Work. A singer in a smoky room, smell of wine and cheap perfume. For a smile they can share the night. It goes on and on and on and on. Strangers waiting up and down the boulevard. Their shadows searching in the night. Streetlights, people living just to find emotion. Hide it somewhere in the Okay, again, this is your part. Dancing is encouraged. Working hard to get my fill.
Encouraged, that was what I was trying to say.
Anybody who wants a thrill, paying anything to roll the dice just one more time. Some will win, some will lose.
Some are born to sing the blues.
Oh, the movie never ends. It goes on and on and on and on. Strangers waiting up and down the boulevard. Their shadows— See, that's what happens. The words just don't come to my mind, and I don't say them. Streetlights, people living Just to find emotion, find it somewhere in the night. If I knew how to play a guitar, this would be so much cooler, but instead I just get to watch you guys, like, right? Don't stop believing, hold on to that feeling. Streetlight people, don't stop believing. Hold on to that feeling. Streetlight people, don't stop believing. Hold on to that feeling.
And then this goes on for a really long time, so you can pretend that faded out. Like on the radio, you know how the DJ like fades it out? This doesn't really work that way, so. I'm gonna do one more song. You get to listen to one more from me, and then Um, anybody else who wants to go next goes next. I like, I like to plan stuff usually. I like to like have a plan. Um, and yet that really rarely works out for me. So, um, so we're gonna just fly by the seat of our pants. So whoever wants to go next, you guys do the rock-paper-scissors and see who goes. Okay. This is, um, how many people know this story of how Rob and I met? Or anybody? He does! So I really honestly thought, I always thought, okay, I'm gonna sing, this is the next song I'm gonna do is At Last from Etta James. And I thought ever since I was in high school, this will be so awesome to sing at my wedding, at my wedding reception. And I was so sure it was gonna be the coolest thing ever until I turned 42 years old and had still not found somebody to marry. And I was like, dang straight At Last, holy crap. So I did sing that at my wedding reception because at last, holy moly, took him forever. But because it took him forever, I have 6 awesome favorite bonus children. Okay.
And life, my love has come along. My lonely days are over and life is a lighter song. Oh, at last, the skies above are blue. My heart was wrapped in cobwebs the night I first met you.
I found a dream that I could speak to, a dream that I could call my own.
I found a thrill to press my cheek to, a thrill that I I had never known how you smile. And the spell was cast, and here we are in heaven. Oh, you are mine.
This is a good one to fade out.
Imagine the DJ. All right, kiddos, who's next?
Hello.
Um, our family does a lot of theater, so pretty pretty much everything that our family sings is from musicals. Um, so this song that we're about to sing is from Shrek the Musical, and it is called I Know It's Today, sung by Princess Fiona, the younger version, the medium version, and the adult version of her. And we definitely just barely decided we were gonna do it earlier today, so it's gonna be really, really good. Also pretend we all have storybooks and red hair. Pretend I have red hair and that I'm an ogre.
I'm not an ogre yet. How do I turn this on?
I don't—
I think it's just kicked on. Okay, um, Camry, tell me when to come in. Oh, I don't remember. It's 5 past. Okay, you start talking after the 2.
Settle in, girls.
Girls, it's story time!
There's a princess in a tower. Oh my gosh, that's just like me.
Poor Rapunzel needs a haircut, but the witch won't set her free. She passes time by singing like someone else I know. As years go by, she sits and waits. As years go by? Uh-oh. A torturous existence. I don't remember this part. She wishes she were dead. Skip ahead, skip ahead. But in the end, the princess finds a millionaire. The prince is good at climbing and braiding golden hair. So I know he'll appear, 'cause there are rules and there are strictures. Then in the storybooks I read by candlelight, my white knight and his steed will look just like these pictures. It won't be long now, I guarantee. Day number 23. I know I know it's today. I know it's today.
Here's a good one. It's a classic. There's a princess in a coma. Glad it's her instead of me. Pretty maiden in a glass box. How I wonder, does she pee? Blah, blah, blah, blah, poison apple. Apple, boring, boring, evil queen, filler, filler, been there, read that, 7 shorties on the scene, skip ahead, skip ahead. But in the end, the princess wakes up with a start. The prince is good at kissing and melting Snow White's heart. So I know he'll appear, and his armor will be blinding, as shining as his Perfect teeth and manly hose. He'll propose on one knee, and our prenup will be binding.
About time we set a wedding date.
Day number 958. I know it's today. He'll show up up today.
There's a princess, any princess, take your pick. They're all like me. Not exactly, I'm still waiting. They're out living happily ever after. Better get here, I want love in seconds flat. No one needs these middle Cut the evil bits.
Whoops, did I do that? Rips book.
Cut the villains, cut the vamping, cut this fairy tale, cut the peril and the pitfalls, cut the puppet and the whale, cut the monsters, cut the curses, keep the intro, cut the verses, and the waiting, the waiting, the waiting, the waiting, the waiting.
But I know he's coming.
Appear, though I seem a bit bipolar. And I'm a vandal now as well. Hope he won't mind. I'm a find, I'm a catch, and a very gifted bowler. It won't be long now, I guarantee.
Day number Are you there, God?
It's me, Fiona. It's me, Fiona. Now I know he'll appear, 'cause there are rules and there are strictures. I believe the storybooks I read. My angel light, my white knight, my knight at his steed. You'll look just like these pictures. It won't be long now, I guarantee.
Day number 20. Day number 9.
Day number 8,423. I know it's today.
I know it. I know it's today. I know it. I know it's today.
I know it's today!
Hi.
Um, hi, I'm Anson, and this is my good friend Dallin, who didn't really volunteer, but he's here anyway. Um, so this is a special song because We basically learned the karaoke track 20 minutes ago, and it's really fast, so don't, don't bother trying to understand the words because it's probably not gonna happen. But you can find the humor in the fact that we bothered to learn the words and are singing them for you faster than anyone should be singing anything. So this is both sides of the coin. From The Mystery of Edwin Drood. And we'll probably mess it up, so bear with me. Sorry, one sec. Sorry, we couldn't hear it back here. One more thing. Hi, sorry, one more thing. Told you we would mess it up, but, uh, that's par. Um, basically the karaoke track It was made only half as fast as the original track, so just for your guys' sake, we're going to actually speed up this track to match it better. Um, here goes. Oh, um, this story's about these two guys with like schizophrenia or something, and they're both inside each other's heads. It's pretty weird. Just— I guess.
That's all. I am not myself these days. For all I know, you, there's more than room enough for two inside my mind. I am likewise in the haze of who I am from scene to scene. What's more, we two, we four, I mean, are in a bind. Or is it I? Or is it me? And if I'm him and if I'm he, each one of us might not agree on what to do. And if I take opposing sides with myself, then who divides what is right or wrong? I'll go along with you. Penny, 2 shillings, 3 sats, 2 florins, a woodchuck, a faggot, the currency form of funds, the visible size of the coin, bobbles, the ronk of a penny, 2 guineas, the 2 sats admits to the rule, not exception, a woodchuck, a faggot, the full exception of funds, the visible size of the coin. Odds or evens, high or low, black or white, or up or down, left or right, or night or day, nature seldom ever fails to most obligingly provide an undisclosed opposing side to one's dismay. There's shadows in this shining moon, if there's a rose, if there's a thorn, and yet we smile. But luck's division is perverse, if things are better They'll be worse in just a while. In for a penny or in for a pound? You guys, you guys, um, What?
It might take a second for them to set stuff up, so if you need more water or more food, now would be an awesome time to stretch your legs.
We'll be ready in 1 minute. Never actually checked if I got Hey, if you can hear the guitar, raise your hand. Cool. Great. Okay. My name is Robbie, by the way. This is Clara, my girlfriend. We're going to be performing Drive.
There you go, tapping at my window. There you go, rattling my heart. Far away, I want to go with you. Every day, never be apart.
I don't know what that chord was supposed to be.
When you're feeling empty, when the skies are gray, I will be your honey. And chase the blues away. Let's go out for a drive. Need a little sunshine. Need a little sunshine. What a day for feeling alive. Want a little more time. Just a little more time. With you. Here we are sitting by the sidewalk. Here we are whistling a song. Close your eyes and dream away with you. Lullaby. Coming right along.
When you're feeling lonely, when the stars are dim, I will love you only, love you to the end.
Let's go out for a drive, need a little sunshine. Need a little sunshine. What a day for feeling alive. Want a little more time, just a little more time. And the world keeps spinning by, keeps you and I Holding on in the dark, you're all I see. It's you and me, right where we belong. Let's go out for a drive, need a little sunshine. Need a little sunshine. What a day for feeling alive. Want a little more time, just a little more time. Let's go out for a drive. Need a little sunshine. Need a little sunshine. What a day for feeling alive. Want a little more time, just a little more time with you.
Yeah.
You're gonna get 2.
Well, I think the guitar is a little difficult, so we figured we'd just knock it out. One more. Sorry, I think there's like a short in this chord. One more song, if it will load.
Oh, that looks promising.
Okay, switch places.
What?
I can play a chord.
Okay.
No blinding light, or tunnels to gates of white. Just our hands clasped so tight, waiting for the hint of the spark.
Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied.
Room to mate the nose on their vacant seaside. If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks, then I'll follow you into the dark. In Catholic school, as vicious as Roman rule, I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black. And I held my tongue as you told me, son, fear is the heart of love. So I never went back. If heaven and hell decide that they both are satisfied, illuminate the notes on their vacancy signs. If there's no one beside you when your soul imparts, then I'll follow you into the dark. You and me have seen everything to see, from Bangkok to Calgary, and the soles of your shoes are all worn down. The time for sleep is now. There's nothing to cry about, 'cause we'll hold each other soon in the blackest of rooms. Heaven and hell decide that they both are satisfied, illuminate the nose on their vacancy sign. If there's no one beside you and your soul invites, I'll follow you into the dark.
I'll follow you into the dark. Best guess? Okay.
Explain what happens. Hello again. This is a piece that we've done once before. It's by NSYNC and Phil Collins.
It's a story of a young child that was raised by apes. It's called Tarzan, but that's all you need to know.
Also, some, some people theorize that Tarzan is the brother of Anna and Elsa. So fun fact of the day.
Yeah. Okay, yeah.
Zabadab, zubidub, zabadab, zadamdidamdi.
Wee-wap, tweedoo. Wee-wap, tweedoo. Wee-wap, tweedoo.
That's not me.
The tricky bit about using YouTube is that they like put stuff in front, so often they're like ads and stuff. Oh, but there's no ads on this one apparently.
So, uh, I think this may have been the song that Hillary was singing when I first saw her at Costco.
It's true.
So, funny story, I was up there I was just doing my thing, singing my Taylor the Latte Boy and thinking I was so adorable, which I totally was. And there was this cute man in a BYU cap, but there were also small children dancing around.
And I thought, oh, that's so nice that that dad is like dancing around with his kids.
And then the kids all left and he was still there. And I was like, hi, who are you? And then that the rest is history. This is totally part of that history. So, okay, this is Taylor the Latte Boy. Again, that's not me. That's Kristin Chenoweth. There's a boy who works at Starbucks who is very inspirational.
He is very inspirational because of many things. I go in at 8:11 and he when he smiles and says, "How are you?" When he smiles and says, "How are you?" I could swear my heart grows wings. So today at 8:11, I decided I should meet him. I decided I should meet him in a proper, formal way. So today at 8:11, when he smiled and said, "How are you?" I said, "Fine, and my name's Kristen." And he softly answered, "Hey." And he said my— and I said, "My name is Kristen." I sang it better that day. His name was Taylor, which provides the inspiration for this poem.
See how that rhymed?
Taylor the—
ah, it's buffering. That's about how my Starbucks story goes.
Get off the Wi-Fi.
Verify if there's any kids on it. That's guilty.
La la la, Taylor's a naughty boy. Oh shoot, experiencing interruption.
Find out why.
Sorry, talk amongst yourselves for a moment. This is the part where I wish I was a good, like, stand-up comic. Like, two so-and-sos walked into a bar. That's not a good joke. See, that's why I don't do this for a living. Honey, bring me— bring— oh, okay, this is the part where you guys are going to hear this story again from the beginning.
This is my song. Hey, help!
Yes, I can Oh yeah, Heather works at a coffee shop, so she— I don't think it's a Starbucks though. No. Okay, let's see how we do here. Who is very inspirational. There we go. He is very inspirational because of many things.
I go in at 8:11 and he smiles and says, how are you? When he smiles and says, how are "Are you?" I could swear my heart grows wings. So today at 8:11, I decided I should meet him. I decided I should meet him in a proper formal way. So today at 8:11, when he smiled and said, "How are you?" I said, "Fine, and my name's Kristen." And he softly answered, "Hey." And he said my— I said—
I always say, "My name is Kristen.
Thank you for the extra full." And he said his name was Taylor, which provides the inspiration for this poem.
Taylor, the latte boy, brings me java, brings me joy. Oh, Taylor, the latte boy, I love him, I love him, I love him.
So I thought I'd get my nerve up to recite my poem a musical. He would like the fact it's musical because he plays guitar. So today at 8:11, Taylor told me he was playing in a band down in the village in the basement of a bar. And he smoothly flipped the lever to prepare my double latte, but for me he made it triple.
And he didn't think I knew, but I saw him flip the lever, and for me he made it triple.
And I knew that triple latte meant that Taylor loved me too. He said, what time are you playing?
And thank you for the extra skin.
He said keep the $3.55 because that triple latte was on him.
Taylor the Latte Boy, bring me Java, bring me joy. Oh, Taylor the Latte Boy, I love him, I love him, I love him. I used to be the kind of girl who'd run when love rushed toward her. But finally a voice whispered, love could be yours if you step up to the counter and order. Taylor the latte boy, bring me java, bring me joy.
Oh, Taylor the latte boy, I love him, I love him, I love I love him.
So many years my heart has waited.
Who'd have thought that love could be so calculated?
Taylor, the latte boy.
I love him, I love him, I love him.
I love him, I love him, I love him.
That was super faster than the track I usually sing it to.
That was like, I'm nearly as cool as Anson and Dallin. Just almost as cool. And they didn't even hear me because they're looking at phones. Oh well. Okay, all right.
Next. Uh, oh, I bet it is.
So that was totally faster than it had to be because it's still on the 1.5 setting.
That, or 2.5. It's fast. That's all I have to say about that. Thank you for fixing that because it would have sounded sillier on other songs.
Oh my gosh.
Okay, let's see.
Okay, um, so we're gonna do a little Aretha Franklin for ya.
'Cause, miss her.
See if it starts here in a second.
Before the day I met you, life was so unkind. Your love is the key to my peace of mind.
'Cause you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel like a natural woman.
When my soul was in the lost and found, you came along to claim it. I didn't know just what was wrong with me till your kiss helped me name it. I'm no longer doubtful of what I'm living for.
If I can make you happy, I don't need more, 'cause you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel like a natural woman, woman. Oh baby, what you've done to me, what you've done to me. Oh, you make me feel so good inside. And now I want to be close to you. You make me feel high. You make me feel— you make me feel—
you make me feel like a natural I was hoping this one actually would have an end. Oh, it did. This here, it's like—
Yay!
Okay, that's my two songs.
Who's next? Cake over.
This is a song called "How to Return Home" that I found by an artist I like named Natalie Wise. That's all I have for you guys. Huh?
Is this the bad mic?
Hair feet sliding on the old wooden floorboards. Home just as you left it, but still you're shaken. Like walking into a museum somehow. Out of time. It's all the same except the girl in the hallway. Where she's been and who she will ripen into, your child sits on the other side of a sprawling divide. To what Take a silent breath. Hold in the change. Tell yourself you still live here.
Take your bags upstairs. It's the only way you'll get through today. Count the hours. Take a shower. Wash yourself away.
The house is pulsing with an alien heartbeat. Was it always here, but you never listened? It's calling you to be the girl that you were way back when.
Again. Take a silent breath. Hold in the change. Tell yourself you still live here. Take your bags upstairs.
Put away your clothes.
Take it nice and slow.
Be their daughter. Nothing's harder.
When nobody knows how to return home, how to return home, and how to survive. There's no written guideline how to go back, how to show up and unpack, how to show How to grow up. How to take a breath. Take a silent breath. Hold in the change. Tell yourself you still live here. Take your bags upstairs. You still share a name, but you're not the same.
You don't fight it. You don't hide it.
It's a whole new game of how to return home. How to return home.
How to return home. How to return home.
Your bare feet sliding Walking on the old wooden floorboards, home just as you left it, but still you're shaken.
Um, so this is a slightly happier song, but that was beautiful, Ari.
Um, this is from the musical called She Loves Me, and it is this thing—
have you guys seen You Got Mail? That movie was based on this musical. So a little backstory which might help the song make a little bit more sense. Also, I apologize for my endnote when it maybe is really bad. They— this girl, Amalia is her name, and she's been writing to a pen pen pal and she's supposed to meet him and she goes to dinner and she thinks that she has not met her pen pal when in reality her pen pal is this dude George from work who she hates but he has brought her vanilla ice cream and so now she's having conflicted emotions so she's writing a letter to her who she thinks is her pen pal. Come on in! Join the party!
Okay.
Dear friend, I am so sorry about last night. It was a nightmare in every way. But together you and I will laugh at last night someday. Ice cream. He brought me ice cream. Vanilla ice cream. Imagine that.
Ice cream and vanilla ice cream.
For the first time, we were together without a spot. Friendly, he was so friendly. That isn't like him. I'm simply stunned. Will wonders never cease? Will wonders never cease? It's been a most peculiar day. Will wonders never cease? Will wonders never cease? Oh, where was I? I am so sorry about last night. It was a nightmare in every way, but together you and I will laugh at last night someday. I sat there waiting in that café and never guessing that you were fat. That you were near. You were outside looking bald. Oh my dear friend, I am so sorry about last night. Last night I was so nasty. Well, he deserved it, but even so, that George is not like this George. This is a new George that I don't know. Somehow it all reminds me of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. For right before my eyes, a man that I despise has turned into a man I like. It's almost like a dream, and strange as it may seem, he came to offer me—
Vani la ois kriim.
Okay guys, well, my song's not gonna be as impressive as Camry's or Ari's because I chose an easy song on purpose. But, um, also I will probably mess up the timing, so this was just for fun. Oh, also, I'll be doing Noddy from Matilda, and it's just like Matilda, like the movie, and basically her dad got mad at her and I think ruined ruined one of her books or something, and so now she's gonna dye his hair blonde.
She's doing it.
Went up the hill to fetch a pail of water, so they say. Their subsequent fall was inevitable. They never stood a chance. They were written that way. Innocent victims of their story. Like Romeo and Juliet, 'twas written in the stars before they even met that love and fate And a touch of stupidity would rob them of the hope of living happily. The endings are often a little bit gory. I wonder why they didn't just change their story. We're told we have to do what we're told, but surely sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty. Just because you find that life's not fair, it doesn't mean that you just have to grin and bear it. If you always take it on the chin and wear it, nothing will change. Even if you're little, you can do a lot. You mustn't let a little thing like little stop you. If you sit around and let them get on top you might as well be saying you think that it's okay, and that's not right. Cinderella in the cellar didn't have to do much as far as I could tell. Her godmother was Tooth Fairy, and suddenly her lot was a lot less scary. But What if you haven't got a fairy to fix it? Sometimes you have to make a little bit of mischief. Just because you find that life's not fair, it doesn't mean that you just have to grin and bear it. If you always take it on the chin and wear it, nothing will change. Even if you're little, you can do a lot. You mustn't let a little thing like this stop you. If you sit around and let them get on top, you might as well be saying you think that it's okay, and that's not right. And if it's not right, you have to put it right. In the slip of a bolt, there's a tiny revolt. The seeds of a war in the creak of a floorboard. The story can begin with a flap of a wing. The tiniest mind clacks, the mightiest sting. Every day starts with the tick of a clock.
All these feats start with the click of a lock.
If you're stuck in your story and want to get out, you don't have to cry. You don't have to shout, 'cause if you're little, you can do a lot. You mustn't let a little thing like this stop you.
If you sit around and let them get on top of you, it won't change a thing.
Just because you find that life's not fair, it doesn't mean that you just have to grin and bear it. If you always take it on the chin and wear it, you might as well be saying You think that it's okay, and that's not right. And if it's not right, you have to put it right. But nobody else is gonna put it right for me. Nobody but me is gonna change my story. Sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty.
Woo!
Hi again. This is another song from a musical, but you guys probably don't know the backstory. But we found a pretty good parallel to the musical.
Basically, if you've ever We'll tell the normal story first at least. Okay, okay, so this is from the musical Secret Garden. It's also a book. In the story, there's a young girl named Mary. She grew up in India. She's like 10, and her parents died of the cholera. So then she's sent to live with her uncle, whose name is Archibald, but his wife died earlier, and he's super heartbroken about it, but it's difficult for him because Mary reminds him of his wife Lily. And Archibald has a brother, Dr. Craven, who is his brother.
And who is also in love with Lily.
Yeah, you find out in this song that he's also in love with Lily. Dr. Craven's kind of a bad guy. And that's pretty much We need the other one.
One sec. This is the one we need.
We're gonna save you guys the whole like loading in the middle of the song thing. Are you sure?
So in all of the practicing we did inside, it never like buffered.
Oh, it is. Oh, this should be good.
We'll see.
Strangely quiet, but now the storm simply rests. To strike again. Standing waiting, I think of her. I think of her.
She leaves the room, yet remains. She lingers on. Something stirs me to think of her. I think of her.
From death she casts her spell. All night we hear her sighs. And now a girl has come who has her eyes. She has her eyes. Eyes. The girl has Lily's hazel eyes, those eyes that saw him happy long ago, those eyes that gave him life and hope. He'd never know— how can he see this girl who has her hazel eyes?
The girl has Lily's hazel eyes, those eyes that closed and left me all alone. Those eyes I fear will never ever let me go. How can I see this girl who has her hazel eyes? In Lily's eyes, a castle this house seemed to be, and I the bravest knight became. My lady fair, Was she?
She has her eyes, she has my Lily's hazel eyes. Those eyes that saw my brother, never me. Those eyes that never saw me, never knew I longed to hold her close, to live at last in Lily's eyes. Imagine me I longed for the day she'd turn and see me standing there, would God have let her stay. She has her eyes, she has Lily's hazel eyes, those eyes that saw me, those eyes that closed and left me. How can I now forget that that I care to be in love, alive and whole, in Lily's eyes, in Lily's eyes.
Wow, you're tall.
Um, that is like my favorite song.
I love, love, love that song.
Okay, I'm going to attempt some something, and I waited till it was dark enough not to see your face, um, because I don't know how this is gonna go. Um, I really, really love the song This Is Me from Greatest Showman. There are some really belting high parts to it, so if I go like that, I can't see your face, and feel free to make any face you want.
I am not a stranger to the dark. Hide away, they say. We don't want your broken parts. I've learned to be a Shame of all my scars. Run away, they say. No one will love you as you are. But I won't let them break me down to dust. I know that there's a place for us, for we are glorious. When the sharpest words want to cut me down, I'm going to send her flying, going to drown her mind. I am brave, I am bruised, I am who I'm meant to be. This is me, watch out, 'cause here I come.
And I'm marching off to the beat I drum. I'm not scared to be seen, I make no apologies.
This is me.
We are bursting through the barricades, reaching for the sun. Yeah, that's what we've become. I won't let them break me down to dust. I know that there's a place for us. Oh, we are glorious. When the sharpest word's gonna cut me down, gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out. I am brave, I am bruised, I am who I'm meant to be. This is me, look out, 'cause here I come. And I'm marching on to the beat I drum.
I'm not scared to be seen, I make no apologies.
This is me. This is a sharp His words wanna cut me down.
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown him out. This is great, this is proof, this is who I'm meant to be. This is me.
This is me. That's a really cool—
oh, ah, how do you Stop this now.
Probably not, but yeah, I like this song. It's an, uh, Ingrid Michelson, I think is her name. It's a cute little just fun song that I don't have to scream in the middle of like that last one. But I like it because it talks about it. I can— I'll get him Rogaine. Isn't that so cute? He doesn't appreciate it.
There's been a lot of bald references tonight and I don't really appreciate it.
He takes so much time doing his hair every day.
It's ridiculous. That's super loud.
If you are falling, then I would catch you.
You need a light, I'd find a match. 'Cause I love the way you say good morning, and you take me the way I am.
You are chilly. Here, take my sweater. Your head is aching.
I'll make it better. 'Cause I love the way you call me baby.
And you take me the way I am.
End.
I'd buy you Rogaine when you start losing all your hair, sew on patches to all you tear, cuz I love you more than than I could promise.
And you take me the way I am. And you take me the way I am. And you take me the way I am.
Okay, Rob, do you want to do the duet?
Yes!
I found a love for me. Darling, just dive right in. Can you hear that? Follow my lead. I found a girl beautiful and sweet. I never knew you were the someone waiting for me, 'cause we were just kids when we fell in love, not knowing what it was. I will not give you up this time, darling. Just kiss me slow. Your heart is all I own, and in your eyes, you're holding mine. Baby, I'm dancing in the dark with you between my arms, barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite songs. When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath, but you heard it, darling. You look perfect tonight.
I found a man stronger than anyone I know. He shares my dreams. I hope that someday someday we'll share a home. I found a love to carry more than just my secrets, to carry love, to carry children of our own. We are still kids, but we're so in love, not knowing what— I'm nothing singing the right words. I'll be all right this time, darling, just hold my hand. Be your girl, you be my man, and in the future, in your eyes, baby, I Dancing in the dark with you between my arms, barefoot on the grass, while listening to our favorite songs.
When I saw you in that dress, looking so beautiful, I don't deserve this.
Done in your You look perfect tonight. Full moon's coming up, almost full. My arms, barefoot on the grass, we're listening to our favorite song.
I have faith in what I see. Now I know I have seen an angel in person, and she looks perfect.
No, I don't deserve Love it.
You looks perfect tonight.
Yeah, yep. Okay, we're gonna, um, do a song. Song that the kids did on their YouTube channel, so let's do Glorious. And then the girls and I are gonna sing one last song, and then we're gonna wrap it up. You guys have been a really, really kind, generous audience. Thank you. We're singing it with our staff. Huzzah! Huzzah!
Huzzah!
You know what? I don't— why don't we just not use the mics. Let's face it, it's not going to be too hard to—
yeah, we're just going to sing loud cuz there's lots of us.
Plus we're singing with a recording of ourselves, so if we sound 5 years younger, it's cuz we are.
Yeah, and I'm not singing in that at all. I sound a lot younger.
Well, mostly we're not doing this. There are times when you might feel —can't see the places where you belong.
But you will find that there is a purpose. It's been there within you all along.
And when you're near it, you can almost hear it.
It's like a symphony.
Just keep listening, and pretty soon you'll start to figure out your part.
Everyone plays a piece, and there are melodies in each one of us.
Oh, it's glorious.
And you will know how to let it ring out as you discover who you are. Others around you will start to wake up to the sounds that are in their hearts.
It's so amazing what we're all creating.
It's like a symphony, just keep listening and pretty soon you'll start to figure out your part.
Everyone plays a piece and there are melodies in each one of us.
Oh, it's glorious.
And as you feel the notes build high, you will see it's like a symphony Just keep listening, and pretty soon you'll start to figure out your part.
Everyone plays a piece in their own melodies.
Each one of us, oh, it's glorious.
Yes, she does. So yes.
No, wait, do you sing from a comic book?
No, you do. Yeah, no, you're gonna sing the very start. Obviously we practiced this like maybe twice this morning, but it's more than we practiced last year for it. That's true. Okay, the beginning of it Got it. Go ahead, go ahead and just start it, cuz yeah. Oh, it's good, just play.
Yeah, I don't know what I did, I broke it. We're good.
So I always do this song at the very end of the concert, um, thank you, because it makes me think of how we all influence each other's lives in one way or another.
And I really appreciate having you guys as part of my life, and, um, that's all I have to say. About that.
I love you, so thanks for coming.
I heard it said that Most people come into our lives for a reason, bringing something we must learn. And we are led to those who help us most grow, if we let them. And we help them in return. I don't know if I believe that's true, but I know I'm who I am today because I knew you.
Like a comet pulled from orbit as it passes the sun, like a stream that meets a boulder Halfway through the world, who can say if I've been changed for the better? But because I knew you, I have been changed for good.
It may be that we will never meet again in this lifetime. So let me say before we part, so much of me is made of what I learned from you. You'll be with me like a handprint on my heart. And now, whatever way our stories end, I know you have rewritten mine by being my friend.
Like a ship blown from its mooring by a wind off the sea, like a seed dropped by a skybird in a distant went one. Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you, because I knew you, I have been changed for good.
And just to clear the air, I ask forgiveness For the things I've done you blame me for.
And I got their nose flame to share, and none of it seems to matter anymore. I go on and on and on as it passes us by, a wind off the lake, a stream run meets a boat. Of my heart in the wood. Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
I do believe I have been changed for the better.
Because I knew you. Because I knew you.
Because I knew you, I have been changed.
We failed to mention one other talent that's on display tonight. If you see anything in this garden that you think is lovely, that's Penny Hopkins' talent.
Thanks for coming, everybody.
Please enjoy food, enjoy each other's company. It's lovely garden and it feels nice outside, so don't rush away too soon, but the singing is over. So thank you and good night.
