118: Subtypes and the Enneagram-This may be why you are being mistyped on the Enneagram
2 Feb 2021 · 30 min
Tracy O'Malley breaks down Enneagram subtypes, the three instinctual variants that shape how each of the nine types shows up. Each type has three subtype expressions, which is why you might be mistyped. She walks through all nine types with examples, including how social eights differ from self-preservation eights.

Let's go.
All right, all right, all right. Welcome to the Becoming Bulletproof podcast and I am following up with an episode that I did recently on subtypes. And you know, the subtypes are honestly one of the top three reasons I believe most of you are being mistyped, right.
What they are is an emotional pattern, right?
Which is like a passion or a vice plus one of your basic human instincts. So we use all three of these, but one is definitely dominant, right? Self preservation, social and one to one. And they help to describe our core concern or focus on our everyday lives. They also explain how you show up in the world and are just as important as your main type. So to recap before, because today I'm going to break down all 27. Yes. 27. There are nine basic types. Yes. And three fall into one of the centers of intelligence. And within each type there are three subtypes.
Self, preservation, social and one to one, also known as sexual from time to time. So that being said, within the nine types with three subtypes each, that leaves you with 27 actual types. But your main type doesn't change. The instincts get triggered into action throughout the day and are the main driver for your main type and for the things that you do. So when your instincts, whether it's your passion or your vice, is an action, it sets our personality into action as well. And the reason that the subtypes are so important is that once you kind of know the person or yourself, somebody else's or your instinctual subtype, you're able to really understand at a deeper level of their motivation behind the motivation and action of their own type. This is hands down top three reasons why people are mistyped. Because it's not talked about. It takes a little bit more digging. The online assessments don't even touch this stuff. Really most of them. And so I thought it would be cool to follow up on the most recent episode I did in breaking down the subtypes. And if you haven't listened to that yet, I recommend just stopping this one right now and go back and listening to that one first because I really kind of explain what that looks like because your subtype can change but your main core type doesn't. And I just did an episode also on tri types which explain how that can change as well. But the subtypes can change. The tri type can change but your main core type doesn't. The expression of it can. And I explained in that last episode most of my life I was a self preservation 8 I still am in certain areas of my life but I'm pretty evenly toggled between self preservation and the one to one I am so so not a social. So usually the last one in this stack is our blind spot, right? And sure enough, and I'll give you an example because I am the least social enneagram8 meaning my subtype is not social, that is my blind spot. So the social subtype of any of the types are concerned with belonging, recognition, relationships as they relate to social groups, having a group to support them, focus on how much power they have in the group, group aware of how their attitudes affect other people. They want personal connection, staying in contact and reaching out to be involved with one another. That is my blind spot. You know, the self preservation and the one to one is where I pretty much live.
But the social. So knowing that this is my blind spot, really having an awareness that you know there are other people that this is a big deal for and when I'm dealing with other people like that or when I kind of fall asleep on this part of me to kind of bring it into.
My awareness and my vision a little bit more. So this is a beautiful way to.
Understand the full depth of our core and our personality because we do use all three but one is usually the sleeper and to be the most highest version of ourself, the most well rounded version of ourselves, it's great to be aware of all of them. And so when we know where the blind spot is we can kind of give it a little extra love and attention. So I thought it would be fun to break down all 27 types and I'll do a short summary. So this isn't a four hour conversation.
But really looking at these and if you're kind of not sure what type you are or you're flip flopping between one or two that you believe you are. The number one way to figure out your type, quite honestly, is to have a guide take you through it. And that's where I come in, because I do take the subtype into consideration in my questioning when I'm taking you through a typing session. This is really hard to do on your own in a short amount of time. It is absolutely possible if you are patient, which I certainly am not always.
But having a guide really take you through the typing journey so that you can use the Enneagram as this beautiful, effective tool in your leadership, in your love and your parenting and your friendships, and just being the very best version of yourself. Reach out to me. I would be honored to do this with you. You can find that information on my website, traceyomalley.com, the work with me section, or you can find me on Instagram and hit me up in the DMs. I do a lot of stuff in the DMs there to kind of explain what that might look like. It is, hands down, so.
Revealing. It's so. It feels like a big, warm hug, quite honestly. And, you know, very rarely does anybody ask you the kind of questions I will ask you. Very rarely do we ask ourselves these questions. That's why it is so difficult to, you know, take on the typing on your own completely and especially with somebody who doesn't maybe know you as well. It's a beautiful thing. So to dig into the subtypes, I want you to kind of think if you're having trouble figuring out your type of. Listen to the types that you think you might be and the subtypes within that. Because a lot of times your top score on these assessments is not your core type. They're usually.
A stress number, a growth number, a wing part of your tri type. This will really help you nail it down. But no, we all use all three subtypes. The self preservation, the social aspect, as well as the one to one, which is intimate relationships and one is more most important to you, and then, you know, the next one in line, and then the next one in line. Okay. All right. So this is what a type 1 looks like with all three different subtypes. So first, the self preservation one focuses on making everything they do more perfect. They're the true perfectionists of the Enneagram, for sure. They see themselves super highly flawed and try to improve themselves and make every detail of what they do right. These people are also the most anxious and worried of the ones, but they're also the most Friendly and warm. Now the social ones focus on doing things perfectly in a larger sense. So knowing the right way to do things and modeling how to do things for others. They're the more intellectual type in the one category. They have a teacher mentality and they see their role as helping others see what they already know. How to be perfect. Okay, so they're the teacher ones.
The one to one ones focus on making other people and society as a whole more perfect. Right? So the self preservation about making themselves perfect. The social ones are.
Teaching those.
The right way to do things. And the one to ones focus on making other people and society as a whole more perfect.
Most of the ones in this category, they're more reformers or improvers than perfectionists. They tend to display more anger and zeal than the other ones. The one to one ones also focus less attention on perfecting their own behavior and pay more attention to whether or not others are doing the right things. I call these ones the sheriffs. Ones in general are. I call the sheriffs. They're the integrity police. But especially the ones one to one ones. They are next level sheriffs in town. All right, so if you're a two, these are the three subtypes within the two category. Self preservation twos seek to gain approval.
Through being charming and youthful. They're less oriented to giving and more burdened by helping. They definitely charm others into liking them as an unconscious effort to get people to take care of them. They're a little more self indulgent. They're more play.
Be the most irresponsible of the other twos.
They are more fearful and a little ambivalent about connecting with others. Okay, so they're more about themselves. The social twos. All my social twos out there seek to gain approval from others through being powerful, competent and influential. I see a lot of these in the entrepreneurial space. A more powerful leader type of a person. They take charge of things and play to a larger audience as a way of proving their value.
Sometimes these social twos are mistyped as eights, by the way.
And I see a lot of social twos have a three wing also. So the one to one twos gain approval through being generous and attractive. They emphasize their personal appeal and promise of support to make others like them and do things for them. This is the more emotional, passionate twos. They can be very seductive too. All right, my threes. My threes. The self preservation threes work hard to assure material security for themselves and the people around them. This is what my therapist thought I Was she thought originally I was a self preservation three, oriented to being good as well as looking good according to social consensus. They want to appear successful, but they don't want to brag or self promote in an obvious way because that wouldn't be good. Right? The self preservation threes are super self sufficient, extremely hardworking, results oriented and modest. So I could see why I could look like a self preservation three, but I'm not motivated by significance like a three is all right. Social threes work hard to look flawless in the eyes of others. They're oriented to competing to win and attaining the material and status symbols of success. They focus on getting things done and always having the right image for every social context. We see a lot of these on Instagram, y'. All the most aggressive, competitive, well known 3. The social threes enjoy being on stage and know how to climb the social ladder. They're always dressed for success.
The one to one threes focus on creating an image that is appealing to others and supporting and pleasing the people around them, especially their partners, co workers and family members. They have a relationship or a team mentality and work very hard to support the success of others rather than their own. A lot of my closest friends that are threes are one to one threes for sure. They are like championing the entire team. They are amazing. All right, all my fours out there, my individualists, these are the breakdowns of the subtypes for the four and fours are the least typed on the Enneagram. And I say quite often that the subtypes of the fours is the reason why most people that are fours are mistyped. Okay, so the self preservation fours are very stoic strong because if you think about the fours, they're the most emotional.
On the Enneagram. They're the most intuitive on the Enneagram. So the self preservation fours look a little bit different than your stereotype 4 because they are stoic and strong. They're long suffering, but they're not as outward with it like some of the other fours. They're emotionally sensitive on the inside and they don't often communicate their darker feelings to others. They still feel things so deeply and may feel sad inside, but they often have a very sunny, upbeat exterior. They may be jokesters because often they receive the message early on that their caretakers couldn't handle them or their pain or their darker emotions. They may feel anxious inside, but they tough things out and have a high tolerance of frustration. I see a lot of more type A females that are self preservation fours get mistyped sometimes as sevens or eights. I see a lot of men that are sensitive, but they kind of hide it, fall into this category as well. Social force suffer and we know it. They focus on their own emotions and the underlying emotional tone of whatever situation they are in. They compare themselves to others and tend to see themselves as less worthy or lacking in some way. They're definitely more sensitive emotionally than most other types. And they wear their feelings on their sleeves. So there's no guessing with this kind of four. And they connect to themselves through the authenticity of their emotional truth. A lot of musicians, artists, comedians can kind of fall into this category as well. One to one fours are more assertive and competitive. These fours are not afraid to ask for what they need or complain when they don't get it. They can appear aggressive to others and they strive to be the very best. That's the breakdown of the fours subtypes. All right, all my fives, my investigators out there, now we're in the head triad. The self preservation fives focus mainly on maintaining good boundaries with others. So if you know the five they are, they have a need for certainty, right? They want to be certain that they are capable and equipped to handle things. That's why they hoard information and energy sometimes. The Self Preservation 5 is friendly and warm though, and they like to have a private space that they can withdraw to if they want to be alone. They focus on minimizing needs, finding refuge and having all they need within their place of safety, which that is a five trait naturally, but especially the self preservation ones. Social fives enjoy becoming experts in the specific subject areas that interest them. We see a lot of more of the.
Outgoing five in the entrepreneurial land. In this category, they like acquiring knowledge and connecting with others with common intellectual interests and causes. They may be more connected to people they connect with through a social cause or are of an expertise than the people in close proximity. In everyday life.
These ones are the little more outgoing fives. Now the one to one fives have more of a stronger need to connect with other individuals. Under the right conditions, they're very, very picky. But once they find their people, they got their people right. These fives are more in touch with their emotions inside, though they may not always show it on the outside. I have some fives in my life where this definitely they can toggle between the self pres and the one to one. They do have a little romantic streak too that they may express through some form of artistic expression. A lot of artists and even musicians can fall into this one too, right? All right. All my Sixes out there, the loyalists, also a driving need for certainty. And the self preservation Sixes are the more actively fearful. Like you've heard me talk about before, the Sixes have either the phobic or the counter phobic. The self preservation Six are the more reserved six, right? They're more actively fearful. They're more in flight. You've heard of fight or flight. This Six is the flight. They doubt and question things in an effort to find a sense of certainty and safety that often eludes them. They seek to be warm and friendly to attract allies as a form of outside support or protection in a pretty dangerous world. They're always looking over their shoulder. The social Sixes are more intellectual ones who find a sense of safety and certainty in following the guidelines of a system or a way of thinking. This is how they feel. Protected by some kind of outside authority. Okay. They tend to be the more logical of the Six is rational and concerned with reference points and benchmarks. They are more sure of things than like the self preservation Sixes who express more doubt and ambiguity. And the Social Sixes can actually become true believers, right, where they can trust themselves and other people a little bit more than the self preservation and the 1 to 1 sixes. Now, the 1 to 1 sixes cope with underlying fear that they may not be aware of by appearing strong and intimidating to others. This 6 is often mistyped as an 8 because of the fight or flight reactions that a lot of us have. This 1 to 1 6, they choose fight and they tend to be the bigger risk takers or they become a little more rebellious because they have this inner program that tells them that the best defense is a good offense. And so this is why a lot of Sixes are mistyped right here. Because it's not your typical kind of.
Troubleshooting kind of six. I mean, they do, but they almost try to trick themselves by fighting. It's crazy. My best friend is a one to one six. My sevens, my enthusiasts out there also need for certainty that they're not going to be trapped into pain or uncomfortable situations. So the self preservation Sevens are very practical. They're good at getting what they want. They readily recognize opportunities and know how to make things happen. Whether through planning or a network of powerhouses. They tend to have a more talkative style, a little hedonistic style to them. The Social Sevens want to avoid being seen as excessively opportunistic and self interested. So they focus on sacrificing their immediate desires to pursue and an ideal of being of service of others. We see a lot of entrepreneurial social sevens. They take responsibility for the group or family and want to be seen as good by easing other suffering. I can see a lot of comedians in this category.
Also. I've talked about this before. Sevens are the most prone to addiction of some sorts because they want to avoid hard feelings. And the social sevens also can fall into like that codependency as well. Not only are they avoiding pain, but then they're taking that responsibility of other people's happiness and stuff. The one to one sevens are idealistic dreamers who have a need to imagine something better than what might be true in their everyday reality. Extremely enthusiastic and optimistic. They have a passion for seeing things as they could be or as they imagine them to be, as opposed to how they really are. Like the end innovators. A lot of the innovation comes in the one to one sevens. All right, my fellow challengers, we're moving into the instinctual triad. So these three types, eights and nines, and we already talked about the ones, they are motivated by justice and truth. And as a challenger, we are always kind of expecting to be violated or betrayed. And that self preservation 8 focus on getting what they need to survive in a direct, no nonsense way. Most of my life, I would say I fell into the self preservation area. I do when it comes to business and finances. I still kind of lean into this one. The self preservation eights have a low tolerance for frustration and a strong desire for the timely satisfaction of their needs. Eights in the self preservation subtype know how to do business and get things done and don't need to talk about it very much. This is when I was like, I'm a bottom line me kind of girl. This is pretty much why, okay, the social eights, this is my blind spot. Social eights focus on protecting and mentoring others they're connected to or anyone they view as needing their support. These are the eights. Like Martin Luther King, definitely, I would say was a social eight. Mother Teresa, more of a social eight.
This is why eights can look very different. Any type can look very different. As you, if you hear me breaking this stuff down. But the social eight, they have a low tolerance for frustration. I'm sorry. They can be rebellious and assertive.
President Trump, former President Trump is also a social 8. While they can be rebellious and assertive, they appear less aggressive as they have a softer side when it comes to taking of others. So like you think about Mother Teresa, like she is strong and domineering but she has the softest side of all when it comes to. I mean, she's like the ultimate mother. The original mama T. Right. And one to one eights, which is. This is where I fall. I would say most. We have a strong rebellious tendency and like to be the center of things. The one to one eights are more proactive and passionate than the other eights and they like to have power over people and situations. Yeah, I toggle between the one to one and the self preservation for sure. All right. And finally, my nines, my peacemakers, also driven and motivated by justice and truth. I see nines mistyped a lot because of the subtypes as well. Because nine, you can have two nines next to each other and they're completely different. And the levels of health obviously have a lot to do with this too. But my self preservation nines, you guys focus on finding comfort and familiar routines and the satisfaction of your physical needs. Right. Whether through eating, sleeping, reading, doing crossword puzzles, the self preservation nines tend to lose themselves in whatever activities help them feel grounded and comfortable. This is where like if you don't understand a 9, it can almost feel like, are you freaking kidding me? Do they not see what's happening around them? This is how the nines can kind of shut down a little bit when they're not in the healthiest spot. And it almost feels like they're doing it on purpose. Right. I swear it's not personal, y'. All. My social nines focus on working hard to support the groups there. They to support the groups they are a part of as a way of seeking a sense of comfort and belonging to a lot of the entrepreneurial nines I see in this category as well that are strong leaders.
They win Mr. And Mrs. Congeniality awards. They like to be part of things, in the middle of things. Social nines tend to be light hearted and fun and expend a lot of effort in doing what it takes to be admitted and to be supportive of the group or community. My personal coach is a social 9.
I think these are the ones that aren't afraid to put their opinion a little. Especially the healthier social nines use their influence, easygoing nature, their likability, their trustworthiness. We see most of the social nines in the entrepreneurial space. The other nines more like to play more of a supportive role. They don't like to be the main act all the time. Doesn't mean it's not possible. But a lot of times the one to one nines and the self preservation nines would much prefer be the supporting cast where they can kind of hide in the background a little bit. One to one nines, the last one tend to merge with the agenda and attitudes of important others in their lives. Like I said, the supporting staff sweet, gentle and less assertive than other types. This is the most relationship oriented nine of the three. They take on the feelings and opinions of the people they are close to without realizing it. This is where out of all the nines, this one can become the most codependent. If they're not the healthiest of all.
That is a breakdown of all 27 with their subtypes. All nine types with the three subtypes within them. And if you are not sure what type you are, maybe go back and listen to this. You know, figure out which one sounds most like you. Like I said, I would be honored to help you get nailed down properly in your type because I do ask questions that touch on all of this so that you can, you know, get the fast pass. You know, if you've ever been to Disneyland or, or Six Flags, which I love, or like any of the parks that have fast passes. That is what working with me feels like. You get the fast pass to the front of the line, you get to skip all the bullshit and all the waiting and the sweaty people and we get right down to your type and it feels really good so that you can enjoy the rides a hell of a lot more that this life provides you. And using the Enneagram really is such a beautiful, powerful, effective, compassionate, loving, grace filled, amazing tool to enhance all areas of your life for yourself, for those you love, for those you lead. I would love to know if you were able to pick out your subtype within your type. If you do already know your type and if you aren't sure what your type is, I would love to hear what you got from this episode. You can take a screenshot. Let's dialogue with it on the Instagram. Let's help all the people I love publicly having dialogue about it so we can help others through our experiences and our questions. Don't be afraid to ask questions. There is no question that is silly or stupid. This is how we learn. This is how we become aware. This is how we have compassion for ourselves. And I would be honored to continue this conversation.
All over the place. So I love digging to the subtypes. This is where it gets real juicy. This is like the ins and outs of the type of. So again, it's like a puzzle. I love it. I could do it all day long. So reach out. You can find me at traceeomalley or on the web@traceeomalley.com at the work With Me section. Let me guide you through the process. It will be life changing.
