Hello and welcome to another episode of the Becoming Bulletproof podcast. I'm your host, Tracy o', Malley and it is Enneag Tuesday. And this is another episode about enneagram101. All the nitty gritty about the different components and parts of the Enneagram. And today I want to talk about mistyping. You're like, wait a second, Tracy, I took the test. So how is my type not accurate? I've been listening to you. You've been telling me 50% of the time they're not right, so why bother? This is confusing and I get it. So here's the thing. The Enneagram is one of the greatest self exploration tools ever. And I don't throw that around lightly. But you have to have the right information. And a tool does no good if you don't have the right instruction manual or if you're using the wrong tool for the wrong job. And that being said, mean if you have the wrong type with the wrong information leading you in the wrong direction. So why?
Why are we being mistyped? Well, this artificial intelligence that we have in technology is great. And sometimes I think we give it too much power and we just trust that those answers are correct. Right? And the thing with the Enneagram is it's a discovery process. It takes time. And like I said, the tests aren't necessarily a discovery process. You asking for information, it's a this or that answer, and then it spits out a result to you. And like I said, 50% of the time it's inaccurate. And I'm going to give you the five reasons why you might be mistyped. And I'm here to tell you, I'm watching a lot of you and I see you put up your fun little memes and all your little Enneagram quotes about your type. And I know a lot of you personally, and I'm here to tell you I think some of you may have the inaccurate number. And it's not to judge it, or. Or it's not even my job to necessarily say that's what you are. But I also know that this is a discovery process. And maybe, just maybe, you haven't explored deep enough. Because I'm here to tell you this. If you think you have the right Enneagram number yet, you aren't experiencing transformation and using that as a tool, and things aren't changing, the chances are you probably have the wrong type of. So you're like trace, but my test said this. I know, I know.
So here are the five reasons I believe you might have the wrong type. Number one. You have decades of buried truths. You have trauma. You have built up some compensatory strategies. And by compensatory strategies, meaning you've experienced something early on in your life. And in order to be safe, you developed some strategy in order to survive, to keep the peace, to fight, whatever that looked like for you. And so a lot of times, the compensatory strategies are what's showing up in your typing, and we'll get to that later. And so you're kind of going off these behaviors and strategies rather than the core motivator. And here's the thing. I'm not calling you a liar, because Lord knows I went 40 years with compensatory strategies at the forefront, and they weren't always accurate to my type, but they've become so subconscious that you are kind of operating like an autopilot sometimes. But the great thing about the Enneagram, if you are willing to be truthful and honest with yourself, is that it can help you slow down. It can help you take an honest look in the mirror and say, okay, I really want to understand the why behind this, not to beat myself up. You've heard me say, this is not to be a weapon or a wall, whether it's on yourself or against anybody else, but this will come with honesty, and the more willing you are to be honest and truthful about the why. And, you know, I always say there's like, six degrees to the real truth of the answer of the question you're asking. So, like, if you are standoffish, why is that? Well, because he's a jerk. Why is that? Why do you think he's a jerk? You know, you can keep discovering deeper, deeper levels of the motivation behind it. You may not have Asked yourself some of the hard questions to get to the root. And that's why being a practitioner like I am, you know, that's why a practitioner that's skilled not only in the Enneagram. I mean, there's a lot of Enneagram knowledge junkies out there. And I'm not knocking them. They're great. I learned from them. However, a practitioner that is skilled not only in the Enneagram, but also has some trauma work like I do, can accelerate your transformation with this tool, by all means, keep exploring it on your own. But if you are tired of running in circles and feeling like you're on a wheel and nothing's changing, then maybe reaching out to me and sliding into the DMs. I'm happy to answer questions, but this isn't going to happen through just a few questions. It really is an exploratory process. Reason number two that you may be mistyped is you are kind of in a rinse and repeat cycle. I know this was true to me. You know, you become so autopiloted, you know, you get triggered, and you don't even realize you're triggered. And you automatically go into those. This is just how I respond. This is just how I respond. And they become patterns that you justify. And I'm talking about not just like the ones that are glaringly obvious, that are destructive, but I'm talking about the patterns that we justify that actually produce success and results. You know, like if you got a banging body or you're. You've got millions in the bank, you can justify certain patterns because there's a payoff, right? Or you're able to manipulate people. So even though you might have success, if you're listening to me right now, I've heard it thousands of times from many people that I talk to. I have all the things, and each time I move the finish line, I'm never fulfilled. Something's missing. This is the time to take an honest and true inventory of the motivations behind some of these patterns that you justify. I mean, you can be an overachiever because you truly believe that you had to do that in order to have love and worth. One of the biggest tools that I tell people to do is be willing to track all the things, track everything. And for people like me, who kind of are rebellious, I didn't want to track shit because it felt like I was being controlled. But if you really want to understand some of the patterns that, you know, maybe you don't even realize are there to get to the motivation Especially if you're having a hard time getting to the motivation. I want you to track when you're doing well. I want you to track what's happening when you're under stress. I want you to track what's happening when you feel comfortable with yourself, with somebody else. Track it, track it, track it. And then start asking yourself, what's happening when this is happening? Like, what's happening around me? What's happening in my body? What does this feel like? How is this familiar? Because if you don't get to the root of the habits and patterns, it's just a matter of time before you go back. And that's why it's really, really important to be willing. Number three, you are locked in on something you are not. If you're like me, I know how to manipulate any situation. I really do. I know how to answer certain things to get the results that I want. And with these online tests and even certain coaches who aren't skilled with the trauma work you have locked in, you know what number you want to be, you know who you want to be like. Right? Whether you're in business, you're trying to emulate somebody, you're trying to be them. And you've taken the test and you answered in a way that wasn't necessarily about motivation. Right? And again, this is not a judgment thing, but I see it all the time. You know, you think like, okay, I want this number because that in your mind equals somebody who's successful, worthy of love. But you're robbing yourself of your gifts. You're robbing yourself and the world of your calling every time that you do this. So, again, this is why a practitioner like myself can really help you get to the root. The number four reason why you are possibly mistyped are the stereotypes and behaviors. I see this all, you know, all the great Enneagram people out there that are, you know, listing all the things about each type. Most of those are just behaviors and typical stereotypes. And if one of those stereotypes doesn't make sense to the number, you scrap it. But here's the thing. Levels of health, which is another enneagram101 podcast, I will do explaining all the levels of health can. Can change how those stereotypes play out. There's other things, like the motivators and wings and arrows, which I will explain in enneagram 101 podcast in a later date. But I want you to know that just because a stereotype of a certain type doesn't feel true to you doesn't mean that that's not your type. For an example, like the enneagram 9 is the peacemaker. And one of the stereotypes of A9 is they're so laid back, they're almost sloth like. And trust me, I know many Enneagram nines that are the opposite of that. They're very powerful Yoda. Like that is like the opposite of a sloth. But again, the levels of health can really change how the expression of that looks. And as I've talked to many nines before, when they go down a dark path, they do shut down. They do kind of become so introverted and numbed out. Does it look like a sloth? Maybe not. But you know, especially if you have somebody that is strong in a level of health, very rarely would that ever come to play. So we may automatically just scrap that. Again, this is about motivation, not behaviors and habits and stereotypes. Right? You hear me? And the last reason, and this is probably the most complicated part of why people are mistyped. And the thing that the tests don't do are things called subtypes. And I will do a whole big episode on subtypes. So, as you know, there are nine basic Enneagram types. Each of those nine types have three subtypes. So if you do the math and the multiplication, that actually means there's 27 different personality types. So within each type, there's three subtypes. And within each of those three subtypes, one of those subtypes can almost look completely opposite from the basic description of that type of. Have I lost ya? Yes. This is where most people get lost. This is where most people get mistyped. And this is why I'm so passionate about teaching this to you. Again, I will do an episode just on subtypes because it's so complex. So I'll give you an example, though. I'm an eight.
And there are the three subtypes. There's self preservation, social, and one to one, or it's called sexual. And each of those instinctual. That's how we operate based on instinct. And there's our survival instincts. And each one of those looks very different. And then you put that under a main type and it can take on all different expressions. Well, one of those three subtypes is called a counter type, which can look totally different. So eights by nature are very reserved. Don't get too close too fast. But under the eight subtypes, the social eight can represent a contradiction to the typical eight like qualities. They can almost appear six like. So this is where I see a lot of sixes and eights mistyped. A lot of eights are actually sixes. A lot of them are or they can even almost look two like they are more loyal and overly friendly. And if you know eights especially that aren't the healthiest, that's not something that happens very easily for them. They are less aggressive than most eights. They're more nurturing and protective, more mellow and outgoing. And it takes a lot for one of the other subtypes of an 8 to realize open up like me. I am one of the one to one subtypes eight and so that's not me by nature. It takes a lot for me to get there. And here's the thing, we use all three of our subtypes but one is dominant, right? That's how we stack them. The social subtype of an 8 can be have a high fear of abandonment while the other eights pretty much won't even get to that vulnerable of a situation. They're more. The social aids can be more self sacrificial. So you can see where subtypes can really kind of throw a kink into these online tests. So subtypes can change how a type is expressed. And I'm sorry, but those tests don't take that into account when you're answering all these questions. Even the really intense high level 144 question paid test. So again, here's the truth. Don't rush your discovery process just because you've taken a test and you like the answer that was spit out. Please, please, please be willing to explore further. When I got my results, I was like, okay, I'm going to explore further to make sure that this is accurate. And the more research I did, the more discovering and willing I was, to be honest, the more I knew without a doubt that my type was correct. And then I had the right instruction manual for me to live into who I was always designed to be. It's why when I do things today, it looks so damn easy to people, right? And if you aren't innate and you're trying to be me, it's not going to be as easy. If you have people in your life that are a certain type and you're trying to step into those shoes and that's not your type, it's going to be painfully hard for you to duplicate what they do. But there's a beautiful, elegant way that you can do it your way. But you have to have the right information. So be willing to be all in with the discovery process even if it means on your own. You know, you tap into somebody like me who's a practitioner of this, who, you know, speaks this language pretty much 247 at this point. And here's the thing, one of the most effective tools when used properly is the Enneagram. But you must know how to use it properly and you got to have the right instruction manual. So I want to hear what you're thinking about this. I know that so many of you are jumping on to this Enneagram information wagon. I am loving all of the DMs and messages regarding the way that I talk about the Enneagram. There is a lot of information out there. A lot of it's fun and funny and I love it too. But what I am hearing is that, you know, you want to hear how to integrate it in your life. And the best way to integrate it in your life is to have the right information first. And that's why I'm going to continue to do these enneagram 101 little sessions with you so you can build up your knowledge on the real information that can provide you with an accelerated transformation in your own self awareness. And once you have your own self awareness, you can really tap into that level of compassion love that you are now giving yourself with other people, whether it's in your home, in your businesses, in your health, whatever that looks like for you. So I would love if you got something out of this information. If you love this episode, please screenshot it, share it, tell me what you're thinking, share it with the world, ask me questions. I spend a lot of time every day in my DMs on Instagram. You can find me on Facebook. I will be here speaking real truth about the Enneagram and how you can use it.
