Hello and welcome to another episode of the Becoming Bulletproof podcast. Oh my goodness. Today we are going to go real deep Enneagram talk. So if you are new to the Enneagram, this might seem a little bit over your head. And that doesn't mean that it's not important because it is. Especially if you love the Enneagram and know the amazing, incredible, powerful, effective tool that it is. I've said this before, the Enneagram is super complex, but not complicated. This is just one of the more complex parts of it. But as you guys have been listening for any length of time, you know that the number one issue with the Enneagram, if you are into it, is being mistyped. And last week I did an episode on the subtypes and that they're one of the top reasons why so many of you are mistyped. Because a lot of the online tests don't take into account.
Some of these instinctual behaviors that are the driving force behind the characteristics of our main type and the motivation of our main type. And I just want to say this now, like to do anything. Having a guide definitely makes things more fun, more effective. It's a lot easier. If you've ever been to any of the theme parks, having a FAST pass makes it a hell of a lot more fun. I went to.
What'S it, Universal Studios a couple years ago and not only did I get a FAST pass, I got a VIP tour guide. And that experience was so enjoyable.
Because I left there feeling like there was no stone left unturned. There was nothing that I missed and that if I go back it'll be great, but I don't feel like I'm missing anything. I think a lot of times when we go on journeys, we sometimes walk away. Like, did we get Everything, all the what ifs, right? And sometimes with the Enneagram, especially if you tackle this journey on your own, which is totally possible, you can kind of feel like, is there something missing? Right? Some of that is your own stuff, Some of it is just facts because this is very complex. And so if that is you and you just want the Fast Pass VIP guide, then I am your girl. Just skip the line, Skip all the what ifs, skip all the do I really have all the information? Skip the fomo, right? The fear of missing out and just hit me up on Instagram, traceyomalley and we can get you set up. Or just go. If you just know. You just know. If you're like me and super Decisive or an enneagram8 and you just know what you want, go to my website, Tracey O' Malley.com, go to the work with me section, get hooked up and you have two options when it comes to the Enneagram. You can just do a typing session, a one and done, which is amazing and super valuable. Or like I said, if you want the whole VIP experience, then just do the Enneagram experience. Because with that you get the typing session, session free, which is super valuable. I'm going to tell you right now, so many people that do the typing session end up doing the Enneagram experience. So if you just know you vibe with me and you know that I can help you, which I will say I'm pretty freaking good at what I do, then just go for the VIP guide and we will tackle that. Because I talk about things like the subtypes, which are really, really important. And when people come to me and they fear they're mistyped or they know they're mistyped, they've taken some tests and some things aren't resonating. Or if you feel like maybe this Enneagram thing is not made for people like you, then that probably lies within the subtypes. And next level subtype talk is called counter types. So just a little Cliff Notes version of what the subtypes are. So if you know the Enneagram, you know there are nine basic types, right? Nine basic types all have a very distinct motivator.
When we take the online test, a lot of times we're answering based on behaviors that won't get you to your type. We have to kind of unpack what motivates everything we do. And if you've experienced trauma or a lot of stuff in your life, it may be hard to really understand what motivates you at your core, core, core level. A lot of times the questions I ask in the typing sessions feels like the six degrees of separation to figure out what is at the root of the things. But that also helps you get to the core motivator, which gets you to your main type.
So there's nine basic types. Three fall into each of the centers of intelligence. We all use our gut or our body, our heart, and our head. However, we use one of them that dominates. We use all three, but one definitely dominates. And I've done episodes on the centers of intelligence. I highly recommend. If you are newer to the Enneagram or you're not sure where you fall, go back and listen to that episode. It's very powerful as far as clarity goes in understanding not just yourself, but other people. So with the nine basic types, each type has three subtypes, instinctual variants, which is our influencing behavior. So there's a motive behind the motive. Sometimes, yes, I know this is getting very complex, but it is so juicy. You guys, like, seriously, this is. I could geek out on this 24, 7, which today I pretty much have gone all day, and I love it and I'm still not tired of it. I'm not fired up. So if you're doing the math, and if you're good at math and times tables, you don't need, you know, algebra to do this. Nine types. Within each type, there's three subtypes, three instinctual variants. Nine times three is 26, seven. So there's actually 27 distinct types. There's, you know, the subtypes within that. Now within the subtypes, out of those three subtypes for each type. So let's say you're a three. Okay, Then there's three subtypes to the three. Three different categories of three ness. Right? And within those three categories of three ness, there is one thing called the counter type. I like to explain the counter type as one of these things does not look like the other or the other thing that it kind of relates to. If you look at the stereotypes or the memes, the counter type doesn't really fit into the meme category because it isn't the funny things that we laugh about. Each type. And the counter type, quite honestly, is a big reason why we're. Why people have a hard time really identifying with their type sometimes, especially if they have done a session with me. That's when I really bring in the conversation at a deeper level around not just the subtypes, but the counter types. I thought it'd be really interesting and beneficial to you since I did the episode on the subtypes last week to really point out and highlight the counter types within each subtype. Within each type. Right, you following me? So if you're a three, there's three subtypes within the three and one of those threes doesn't quite fit the typical three ness of the three. And so I'm going to go through all of them, but I'm going to highlight the counter type for you.
This is the type that goes against the usual flow of the passion that is typically expressed by each type. All right, so we have the ones.
And so the three subtypes within each category are self preservation.
The one to one and the social.
Right.
And I will say the counter type in each category is not the same. So like for the one it could be.
The one to one one which is the counter type, but for the twos it could be a different one of the subtypes that's different. So just don't assume that one subtype is the counter type in each one because that's not true. It's different for each one.
The self preservation one is more about like, you know, their basic human needs, their environment, finances. The social subtype is more about the collective group. And the one to one, sometimes known as the sexual subtype is about more the close, close, dynamic relationships. All right, that just, that's a very brief overview. If you re listen to the episode on the subtypes, it'll break it down pretty deep for you. So I'm going to go through each of the types and their subtypes, but I'm going to highlight the counter types. So I'll just really kind of zoom through the regular ones. If you want to hear about the subtypes, go back and listen a week, but here we go. All right, for my ones, my observers or my improvers, my reformers, sometimes known as the perfectionists, the self preservation one is the most anxious and worried one. They're actually probably the most anxious and worried of all the types, including sixes. Believe it or not, the self preservation ones usually have had a history of being put in the position of taking on a large amount of the responsibility for the family at an early age. Way too much responsibility. There's a girl that I was coaching today who falls into this category. The self preservation one is the true perfectionist, needing to control everything and making sure that everything is right and okay all the time. Controlling the environment is related to ensuring that that one's sense of survival. The self preservation. I'm sorry, the Social one is the true perfectionist among the ones. So the social one is perfect. Right. The self preservation one is the most anxious and worried. But the social one is the epitome of perfectionist. They have a teacher mentality and they feel a need to represent the perfect model of how to be. The social ones can be above it all or know it alls as they can appear superior and highly confident. Their need for superiority reflects a need to have some power over those and can also act to separate them from other people.
All right? And finally, the one to one subtype within the ones is the counter type. So this one doesn't look typical of the other ones.
In contrast to the self preservation one who's the perfectionist and the social one who is perfect. The one to one one perfects others being more of that reformer than a perfectionist. And the one to ones can seem a lot like eights and that they can be driven to make the changes they feel very, very strongly about. In this character, anger kind of potentiates desire. And there is an intensity of desire both to get what one wants and to change other people and society to fit the ideal. So you can see how that can look a little bit different than your typical one. Right? So the twos, which are my helpers, the three two subtypes each represent a different approach to the need seduce. And I mean that in the most significant way, right?
The social twos seduce groups from a position of power. So the social twos kind of do that by being people smart and competent. The social two is the most of the three twos that are power twos, I would say, and is often the owner of the company. This is the most entrepreneurial two or the person in charge. This is a more adult two than the self preservation two. And this one can be mistyped a lot as a three or an eight because they are a little more aggressive than the typical stereotypical two. I see this a lot where people are mistyped as a 33 wing 2. A lot of you 3 wing twos are mistyped because you're actually a social 2 sometimes, right? So the 1 to 12 is a wilder, more emotional 2 that resembles the femme fata archetype or the male equivalent. Right. The 1 to 12 is good at seducing specific individuals in a more classical version of seduction. They look for that one person who will take care of them and they can use their attractiveness to win over that person. The one to one subtype of the two is a dangerous beauty who displays a lot of forward momentum in moving towards others. But the counter type in the 2 department is the self preservation 2. Because this self preservation 2, they kind of seduce like a child in the presence of grownups, right? They have the strongest love need of the three twos and the twos crave love. That's where their worth comes from. But The Self Preservation 2 has the strongest love need of the three. They really, really aim to be charming and giving in the service of maneuvering other people into liking them and taking care of them. And I say this so with so much love, like they come by it very unconsciously and innocently.
And this is how they take care of people. Like I said, more childlike than the other twos. The self preservation ones are more fearful of and a little ambivalent about relationships. So they can look a lot like sixes, right? So this is the counter type, all right? All my threes out there, the achievers, the competitive achievers.
The.
Social three.
Is what we know as the classic three, right? They are a person who wants recognition, likes to be the center of attention. The social three is what the memes are all about, right? They need to look good in the eyes of the group. They make things happen in service of the group and organization. Social threes have a hard time being vulnerable and can be very sensitive if they feel like they're made to look bad. They also like to take charge and do whatever it takes to further the goals of the group. The 1 to 1 subtype is the 2 ish3, right? So the 3 who achieves in service that is important to others. The charismatic three excels at looking good and attracting others who then become the focal point of their efforts. This is the most emotional 3. One of my best friends is a 1 to 13 wing 2. And they can be shy as a person, but can support others with a great deal of enthusiasm and dedication. Now the counter type subtype within 3 is the self preservation 3. And this self preservation 3 is a very 1 ish 3. So they can kind of look like a one who has a vanity for having no vanity, right? While this3 still wants to be seen as successful, The Self Preservation 3 doesn't necessarily want others to know that image is important. So as a result, they may not be as forthcoming or as aggressive about their accomplishments as the social three. This highly self sufficient three is concerned with looking like the perfect model of whatever role they may play. So actually being good at the things they do, not just looking good, right? So that's where the counter type is. Because the main motivation for three is significance. But the other threes kind of really need to feel like they look good. Right? All right. My fours, my intense, creative individualists out there.
The fours are so unique. They get. They get a lot of fun memes about being so dramatic and going to the dark side.
Go really dark. Right? That's the stereotype of them, and there is some truth to that. But they have an emotional range like nobody's business. Okay. The social four is emotionally sensitive and feels things very, very deeply. They. They tend to take on the victim role more than the other ones. In Contrast to the 1 to 1 4, the social 4 is not competitive, though they often compare themselves to others and find themselves lacking. Okay, so the social four, there's a need for self recrimination. It's as if you want to ask them what's wrong with you, that you think there's something wrong with you. Right? They always think there's something wrong with them. It's kind of like this constant battle with themselves. The 1 to 14 is more assertive than the social 4, whereas the social 4 feels a great deal of shame. The 1 to 14 is shameless. Right. The social 4 is the woe is me. The 1 to 14 is like very outspoken with their anger and they are very competitive. So the fours, I would say out of all the subtypes, they could not be more drastically different. That's why fours are the least mistyped or the least typed on the enneagram. They're the hardest to figure out, quite honestly, if you don't know what you're dealing with. They're like, I don't like. Most fours have been told at some time in their life, I don't even know what the fuck to do with you because they're so dynamic. And the three subtypes within the four really show that.
The one to one fours express envious anger and envy that manifest as competition. Also, the 1 to 14 tends to be more vocal about expressing needs and they rebel against any shame they may feel is related to their desires. So even though they carry the shame, they kind of rebel against it. Now, the counter type in the fours is the self preservation 4. And this one I see a lot in the entrepreneurial land. You know, typically fours are very creative, artistic. So as you know, a lot of creatives aren't the most business savvy typically doesn't mean it's not possible. But the self preservation four is where I see the entrepreneurial four.
I believe the self preservation four is probably one of the most mistyped on the Enneagram as well. The self preservation four is someone who does not suffer out loud like the other two. They're not as outwardly emotional as the other fours, but boy are they deep with emotion and feeling and sensitivity and intu.
They're really autonomous. The Self Preservation 4 kind of makes a virtue out of enduring pain without wincing. They kind of take pride that they don't show it, but they feel it, trust me. And it usually comes out in some kind of projection or sabotage. Quite honestly, the Self preservation fours are the tougher fours. They're more masochistic than melodramatic. The other ones are a little bit drama. This one is got like a death wish when they go to the really dark side. Very risky. They are also kind of 1 ish fours as well. Stoic, self disciplined individuals. They challenge themselves to achieve rather than engage in longing.
Usually the ones who say they can't find their Enneagram type a lot of times end up being self preservation force. Quite honestly, I see this a lot. All right. My fives, my quiet specialist investigators.
So in Contrast to the 34 subtypes, which are quite different from one another, the 35 subtypes look rather similar to each other, I would say. These fives, these subtypes, like the fours, look so drastically different. There isn't much difference within the five subtypes. The self preservation has a passion for hiddenness and sanctuary. There's a strong need for boundaries and to have control over those boundaries. The Self Preservation 5 is the least expressive of the three, though, and they have difficulty expressing their anger. Although the self preservation fives can be expressive, it's always on their terms. Always. The social 5 relates to the group in terms of super ideals. So they don't relate to the people, but to the very outstanding among the people. So they can kind of be judgy. They look for the expert in the crowd.
This is the more out there five than the other ones. The search for super ideals reflects this five search, search for meaning in the world and underscores their sense of struggle with the polarity between the extraordinariness and the meaninglessness. Okay, the counter type within the fives is the 1 to 1 5. This 5 is one of the most romantic, believe it or not, of all 27 subtypes. This romanticism kind of gives them a vibrant inner life and they tend to be very passionate about one person. So as you know, the five can disconnect emotionally, but the one to one five.
Can Be very passionate about one person and it's usually a person they can't find. So similar to the social five, search for super ideals, this one to one five looks to find the.
Example and proof of absolute love. Someone whom they can trust with their inner world, which they don't really let many people in. So this is not your typical five, but they all are pretty similar. But this one, yep, it's the dark horse. You don't, you don't see them coming sometimes it's. They're amazing. All right, My six is, you know, the loyal skeptics out there, the master troubleshooters. So the self preservation 6. Fear manifests as insecurity.
Like as a fear, there's a fear of not being protected. So the self preservation sixes seek the warmth, embrace of family and friends. They escape their anxiety through becoming close to and dependent on others in a world that they might perceive as dangerous. The self preservation sixes seek to form alliances.
And so to do this, they have to be more friendly, trustworthy and supportive.
Because that's how they get to their certainty. Right? The social six is very concerned with knowing what the rules and guidelines are. Like good girl scouts or boy scouts. They are dedicated to adhering to the group code. These are the police in the six group. These sixes have the mind of a lawgiver and can be very legalistic, like, don't break the rules, don't you dare. Lacking either in trust in their self.
Or trust in others, the social six relies on abstract reason as an impersonal frame of reference. These sixes have a love of precision and efficiency and almost zero intolerance of ambiguity. They do not like it, not even a little bit.
The 1 to 16 is the counter type. And if you know the enneagram sixes at all, they're the one type that has what's called a phobic six, which is your self preservation six, which they definitely operate more with fear or the counterphobic six. The counterphobic six is also the counter type of the six, where you know their need for certainty and safety. This one to one six almost goes head on into it to prove that they're not afraid, but they're shaking in, they're shaking their shit inside. This type, I often see mistyped as eights a lot because that bold, assertive, intimidating nature to face shit head on, even though it looks very eight like it's not motivated, not even a little bit like an eight. These sixes have a need not just for strength, but also for intimidation because there's an inner program in them that the best defense is a good offense. And anxiety is kind of put at bay by skill and readiness in attack. But then they freak out later. One to one sixes tend to move against danger and this can give them the look of a troublemaker. They tend to move towards the risky situations, feeling a sense of safety in confronting threats rather than avoiding them. And they trust themselves more than they trust others. But know that at the core of them is anxiety and fear because, you know, shit can go sideways really, really quickly. So this six I see mistyped as eights all the time. My best friend was all right. My sevens, my enthusiastic visionary innovators of the group Self preservation Sevens are those that make alliances. They collect around themselves a kind of family or group. They rely only on those they trust. In Contrast to the 1 to 17 who's more idealistic, the self preservation 7 is more pragmatic and materialistic.
Sevens are good at taking advantage of good opportunities and finding ways to further their self interest.
The self preservation sevens are both pleasure loving and good at getting what they want. They're very seductive. The 1 to 17 is the dreamer. And this is the one the memes are made about, right? They express the need to imagine something better than ordinary stark. They don't want to be stuck in anything that doesn't feel good. This is a gluttony for things of the higher world, for idealization. This is all the seven memes right here. They have a passion for embellishing reality and they tend to look at things with the optimism of someone who is in love. When we talk about the sevens wearing rose colored glasses, this is who they're talking about. Because of this, they have a tendency to display too much optimism and enthusiasm. And this is kind of their way of not dealing with shit. All right. The counter Type within the 7 is the social 7, which is ironic because you would think the enthusiastic extroverted 7, that the social would be the typical 7, but it's not. The social 7 represents a more pure character who expresses a kind of counter gluttony. What I mean by that is the Social 7 focuses on not exploiting others and helping and supporting the group. Social sevens postpone the fulfillment of their own desires for an ideal of supporting others and they want to be seen as good for their sacrifice.
A generalized tendency of this type is to adopt the role of helper and to be concerned with the alleviation of pain.
I can see this one mistyped as two sometimes, but a lot of the sevens they can get a bad rap for being kind of selfish because they just do what they want. They want to have fun and if they're bored, they move on. The Social 7 is more about support. The support role. I see a lot of entrepreneur healthy sevens that are in the social sub type. All right, my fellow eight active, controlling challengers.
I definitely.
I am your stereotypical eight. I will say I toggle between the self preservation eight and the one to one eight. So the self preservation and just depends on my situation, quite honestly. And here's the thing with the subtypes, they can stack differently sometimes, unlike your main type. Our main type doesn't change, but your subtypes can change how they get stacked. And I think the healthier we get, the more we're able to.
Use all three. But the one you use the least. Usually we have two that are like right up there and then there's one that's like, yeah, not me, that's your blind spot. And I'll explain this in regards to me as an example in a second. All right. So the self preservation 8 expresses a strong need to get what's theirs to get what they need for survival. This comes into play with me a lot when it comes to security financially. This a lot comes from the messaging I got as a kid. The self preservation aids have a strong need for satisfaction and an intolerance of frustration. They often go after what they need without talking about it very much.
The self preservation subtype. There's an exaggerated ability to take care of oneself and one's own needs. I was just having a conversation this weekend about how I used to operate it in this. Operated like this. And this is why I could easily have been mistyped. That's why many of you may think I look like a three. Because the self preservation eights are the most armed and protected of the three eights. We just kind of really go head first into things and don't take a lot of time to feel much. We barrel through things like a three can sometimes. But I was talking to somebody this weekend about how I used to be in my unhealthy 8 and use it as a weapon like I don't fucking need you. That is the self preservation eight to a core. All right, the one to one eight. I think I fall mostly into this one today though. The 1 to 18 has the strongest antisocial tendency and is the most rebellious and emotional of the 38 subtypes. They are out front, openly say their values.
They openly say that their values differ from the Norm, the one to one eights can be fascinating and more colorful than the other eights. They can be very passionate and energetic and they typically use this big energy to take over the whole scene. I definitely fall into that category. Now, the counter type within the eights is the social eight. This is the one that doesn't look like your typical eight. This is also my blind spot. So the social eight is a rebellious person who goes against social norms, but who is also oriented towards protection and loyalty. Even though I do carry that, it's more for just people. I know I won't pick a battle for just anybody, but the Social 8 will.
This was the child who got violent in protecting the mother from the father sometimes.
Even though I did do that. But this is like the solidarity 8. So in contrast to the self preservation 8, the social 8 is more loyal and less aggressive. Yeah, they look. They can look more like a six, right? Definitely. They use their power and influence in the service of others. They can also appear 2ish, sometimes 6ish in their drive to support others rather than asserting their own needs. They're very sensitive to injustice and unfair social norms. And although I'm very sensitive to the vulnerable, not so much social norms.
They are very protective of their people. I am very protective, but in a different way than the social one. Sometimes I don't think about the full collective. I'm more about like, all right, what's in front of me right here. Right. And this is why this is my blind spot. Because sometimes I don't think about the bigger picture all the time. So although I won't naturally ever go into the social, it's really good to know where your blind spot is. And this one is mine. All right. Last but not least are the nines, the adaptive peacemakers. All right. The Self Preservation 9 expresses the need to find protection and comfort through merging with an experience of the satisfaction of physical needs. So through consistently getting lost in activities they enjoy, for example, eating, sleeping, reading, doing crossword puzzles or working. This is what all the memes are about. When I talk about Eeyore9. This is Eeyore9. They simultaneously experience comfort and avoid or forget their own sense of being. The self preservation nines like to be alone more than the other two nines. They are also practical and would rather get absorbed in a familiar and comforting activity than take the risk of expressing themselves in the world. And I'll see nines, the self preservation nines do this a lot. Where, you know, they know they have. This is where their procrastination comes into play and they don't even know why they procrastinate. This is why. Because they may have a list of something to do and then they end up going to the junk drawer for a pen. And they realize the junk drawer maybe needs to be organized and it's so messy. So instead of. And it's so. They come by this so innocently, but this is like a comforting thing for them. They get lost in the organization of the junk drawer and they have dropped the ball on all this other stuff. That is the self preservation 9 in its core. The 1 to 19 expresses a need to be. Expresses a need to be through the other. They try to gain a sense of being not found inside themselves by fusing with somebody else. These are the more codependent 9. These nines may find it difficult to locate their own passion for living, so they unconsciously seek it in someone else. Definitely the Most codependent looking 9. Where the self preservation is a loner. This 1 to 19 can be a little bit more not needy because they will conform their needs for somebody else, but they need somebody, right? And usually somebody that's really important to them. These nines are tender and sweet and they may not even realize they're living through specific others. I just coached a girl tonight who falls into this category for sure. The coolest chick. She's a badass, but she can slip in into this for sure. These nines are also kind and gentle and not very assertive. All right, the social nines. This is the counter type. This is the nine that doesn't quite fit the memes. I would say. The social nines. The social nines are the ones that don't mind being the lead singer and not necessarily the backup dancers. The other ones, like being backup dancers, the social nine can step into the spotlight. They have a need to feel a part of the group.
That overcompensates for an experience of feeling different or not part of the group. Social nines can be workaholics in service of the group, working hard and unselfishly to support the family or group without showing their stress or putting a burden on other people. So the social nines can be good leaders who look a lot like threes. And it's so funny because one of my very good friends, she wanted to be a 3 so bad. So bad, so bad. And I'm like, girl, you're totally a nine, but you're a social nine, which is like that entrepreneur, leader, speaker, and they're like Yoda. The social Nine is the Yoda. Because they can be coaches, they can be the center of attention without conforming all the time. But they feel.
That their truth comes in the support of others. So you can see going through all 27 and. And specifically the counter type, how complicated, I'm sorry, complex this can get. So having a guide kind of take you through what that might look like certainly will make this process a lot more fun, a lot easier, a lot more effective in using the tool of the Enneagram. And like I said, I'd be so honored to walk this journey with you. And I know I just dropped a lot of information on you. Information doesn't equal transformation. It's how we integrate it. If you are loving this information, I want to hear what you learned. If you know now what subtype you are and if you are the counter type, I want to hear about it. I want to see all my counter type people out there take a screenshot, tag me on Instagram. Let's dialogue about this. Because we can help ourselves and so many people through education of the Enneagram. Through dialogue. And your questions help the many.
