Tracy O'Malley breaks down the Enneagram's three centers of intelligence: body (types 8, 9, 1), heart (2, 3, 4), and head (5, 6, 7). Your dominant center shapes how you process the world and reveals your core type, whether you lead with instinct, emotion, or thought.

Welcome to another episode of Becoming Bulletproof. Today is an Ennea Talk Tuesday episode and another enneagram101. So I get so many questions from you guys because let's just be real. Even though the Enneagram has become something super, super trendy, you've heard me talk about it, like, I love that it's trendy, but you know, it can really set you back if you have the wrong information. And so I wanted to continue these little episodes called Enneagram 101 with the different parts of the Enneagram because it's a lot more than just the behaviors that you're seeing on the fun squares on Instagram. It's a lot more than the stereotypes and it's a lot more than even those online tests. Why the Enneagram can be a powerful tool is this like, let's say you want to go on a trip, you need to know where you're going, right? Anywhere that you want to go. If it's to Mexico, you need to know the coordinates to get there. And you can take the long way, right? Or you can have a crystal clear map so that you can get there as fast as possible. You know, I always, no matter where I'm going, I use an app called Waze W A Z E.
Even if I know where I'm going. Because what I love about that app is it will let you know in real time any detours, any hazards, any obstacles that might pop up. It can be a little annoying sometimes because it's always reminding us, but it allows me to get where I want to go as quick and safe as possible. And when the Enneagram is used, right? That is exactly what it can do for you. It can be like your own personal Soul Ways app, right? But if you have the wrong type, which many of you do. You are going to be taken completely off course a lot of time or you're going to be trying to use this thing called the Enneagram and you're like, yeah, this doesn't work or this is bullshit or whatever, right? And that's why I'm so passionate about talking it, talking about it because it is trendy. It is trendy. But if you have the wrong information, it's going to take you off course. And how many of you have ever been on a road trip so excited to go there. Like one of my favorite road trips to San Diego. It's about a five hour door to door drive from Arizona and I love it. And nothing is worse than when you're headed somewhere that you're excited for. In the case of the Enneagram, if you're headed towards growth and abundance and love and success and whatever that looks like. And there's nothing worse than getting the shit kicked out of you along the way or a detour or something that completely takes you off course. So that's why it's so important to know the right information. It's why I'm going to educate you more and more every week.
So that you can have the right information so you can get exactly where you want to go as fast and safe as possible. Now, I do this kind of thing all day long. You can dissect it all yourself and absolutely, it's possible. But there's nothing better than having somebody who's a master at this taking you through the process, especially if you've had enough. If you're sick of feeling stuck, if you are sick of, you know, trying something and it never works for you or the sabotage kicks in or any of that, I want you to reach out to me on Instagram, slide into my DMs and send me a message. Or just go right to my website, Tracey O' Malley.com. click on the Work with me section and book your appointment with me. This will take all the guesswork out of it. We will get you exactly your coordinates so you know where to go moving forward. And you can stop this back and forth and back and forth. So today's enneagram 101 is about the triads. This is like the most basic parts. And if you even looked at this, some of you would see that the type that you took online, the test that, you know, the test score that you got, would show that you're actually in the wrong type. This is like the first thing to look at. That's why I wanted to start with this. So what are they? What is the triads? So the triads are the centers of intelligence, right? And there's three of them. There are nine basic personality types. Within the Enneagram, there are three centers of intelligence, or also known as the triads. And within each center, three types are in each one. And then in each of those three types are three subtypes. We will get to that complexity on a totally different day. We want to just focus on the centers of intelligence. So there's three of them. There's the body, which is the physical or instinctual. There's the heart triad, or center of intelligence, which is emotional. And then there's the head triad, which is intellectual. The centers of intelligence, like I said, can be your first step in determining if you have the right type. And I'm going to give you an example. So my son Joey, he's going to be 22 here any minute, and he keeps fighting me on this. He is definitely a 2, which is the helper, which lies in the heart triad. Heart center of intelligence.
And most of his behaviors and characteristics resemble that of the one, which is the reformer, the perfectionist. And he keeps fighting me on this, which is hilarious, because this is what I do all day long. But I appreciate that. That's why it's so important to not just go off behaviors. Because if he was just to go off that, he would think he's a one and he'd be on a map and a course that isn't for him. Now, for those of you that really, really know my son, which is like none of you, but I know him better than anybody, that boy does everything based on heart and emotions, right? Everything is about a feeling and empathy, which is the strength of the triad that is in the heart. And in the heart Triad are the 2, the 3, and the 4, right? So anytime that you think that you're one thing, I really want you to go back to the core, which is that triad. Okay? So with Joey, I'm like, yes, your wing is a one, no question. And we'll get into wings at a later date, which is really, really fun. And that's what's great about the Enneagram and personality types, is you can have, like, two of the same type in a room, and they express themselves completely different. So Joey is a 2. Looks very different than.
You know, one of his closest friends. That's a two. So the three centers, the three centers of intelligence, the three triads represent three modes of Perception, processing and expression. So like I said, the body is like the moving sense and kinesthetic. The heart, emotional, is feeling, and then the head intellectual is thinking. And each center has advantages and disadvantages, positive uses and misuses. We use all of them as a human being. However, one definitely dominates for all of us. And these centers help us interpret and interact with the world around us. And you know, when it's misused, it can take you off course, right? And off your roadmap. So I'm going to break down the three. The body, the motor, the kinesthetic. The instinctual center has types eight, which is the Challenger nine, the peacemaker, one, the reformer. And this is the instinctive center. So when thoughts initiate movements in you, your motor center is activated and there's an impulse that comes from the motor or that like that gut center. And that can be a solid guide to right action.
So like with the Challenger, they're very aggressive. And you know, I've said this before, like, instead of ready, aim, fire, the eights are like, fire, aim, I hope you were ready. Whereas the 9 is a little more laid back, but they still operate on kind of reading a situation and knowing what they need to do to keep the peace. And the one, they're more internalized as well, but they're always kind of navigating what's right and what's wrong. Like it's black and white for them. And that is all coming from an instinctual center. Sometimes when we operate from the instincts, we just go and deal with the consequences later. Right.
But sometimes our best thinking can hold us back. And so when we use this instinct properly and this center of intelligence properly, we can move the needle pretty quickly. But misuse can lead to impulsive behavior or inertia. And, you know, then there's some messes to clean up sometimes. So for the heart triad, which are types 2, 3 and 4, 2 being the helper, 3 being the achiever, 4 being the individualist. This is the emotional center. This regulates the, the feeling function and the experience and expression of emotions. So if this is you, if you're one of these types, what happens is you feel the emotions and it immediately allows you to connect with empathy.
Or you are feeling an emotion and you know, like, okay, this is what I need to do, but it's all based on what you're feeling.
What's great about this is, is these people can be great connectors when they're healthiest.
They, you know, because the. One of the basic human needs is connection. So these people, when they are healthy master connectors. They are the compassion people. Empathy, it's beautiful. But when they misuse this or maybe aren't in the healthiest range, this can lead to oversensitivity with resentment, insensitivity, where they just dismiss feelings altogether because they're too uncomfortable. Or there can be some emotional manipulation because they are the masters of emotion. Okay, the head triad or head center of intelligence include types 5, 6, and 7. 5 being the investigator, 6 being the loyalist, and 7 being the enthusiast. So this is the intellectual center, the thinking function. And this controls, like, the experience and expression of thoughts, beliefs, and. And other cognitive activity. So these people, like, their heads are like all the tabs open on the computer all the time. So they're always kind of like gauging things through their head. This is great because they can be that objective, analysis person. They can have good reasoning because they think things through. But where they can get into trouble if, you know, they're not in their healthiest range or they, you know, are scattered all over the place, they can get paralyzed and they can get caught up in overanalyzing, which prevents them from taking action. And so they. They kind of feel like they're stuck on a hamster wheel.
So with that being said, if you have taken an online test or whatever, and, you know, if you work with me, we go through this and I explain what these triads are and why they're so important for you. And like I said, we use all of them, but one definitely dominates. And like, I am in the body triad. No question, no question. My daughter is in the head triad. No question. My son is in the heart triad, which is awesome. So we have one representative in each home. I mean, we have one representative of each type in our home, which is pretty awesome when we understand it this. When. When we weren't healthy, it was a shit show because we all operate from completely different systems. Centers dominating, right? So when looking at your type or what you believe it is, really, really, really see where you reside most often in the centers of intelligence. And like I said, the easiest way to get to the bottom of this is to connect with me. Book a time to take the guesswork out of it. I want you to know where you're going, like, really know where you're going, because many of you have the wrong coordinates and you keep ending up in a direction that isn't for you. And you feel it and then you get frustrated. And I want you to know that you're going to get there the fastest way possible because Mastering self awareness, quite honestly, is a superpower. And it is the first line of action to become bulletproof. So that is today's episode, enneagram101. If you loved it, share it, screenshot it, tag me in it.
