Buckle up, let's go.
I don't know about you, but there. There's one phrase that really is such a cliche until it happens to you. And the whole catalyst for me really deciding and taking action and turning my life around a decade ago, you know, I've been dabbling it. I've been dabbling at this for 20. But it was almost 10 years ago that I said enough was enough. And it's the cliche of life is too short.
And we throw it around pretty innocently.
But this last week, in a span of 72 hours, I lost three friends. And not just acquaintances, but people that have made a huge impact in my life. And they were all sudden, they were all pretty tragic and innocent and a lot of people left behind asking why? And I thought today would be a great episode because it's when things like that happen and tragedies like that happen, where shit gets put in perspective real quick. Life is a constant moving target. And just when you think you got this shit figured out, things change. And my dad used to tell me this used to piss me off. But the only things you can count on, there's two things you can count on trace. Taxes and change.
And although these three beautiful people from my life left this earth far too soon, I know that in their death, there's lessons that we could all take away. When we are experiencing tragedy and grief and loss.
Different things about ourselves get exposed. We realize very quickly either how strong we are, how much more work we have to do, where there's some blind spots that maybe we haven't seen, some things that typically we can sweep under the rug that no longer can. And I gotta say, like, you know, in my close circle of friends, it's kind of a known thing that I'm the. I'm the six week later, friend. When death happens, you know, you know now, like as an enneagram 8, when shit's hitting the fan and we're in crisis, you call o' Malley like you for sure do. If you need a big action taken, you call me, you know, Enneagram eights are fantastic at that. However, when there is a death, I am not the one usually that is on the front line. And I was asking myself, you know, because death itself, like, I think it's a sad thing when we lose people, but I think there's actually something beautiful about it too, you know, I've had the two most influential people in my life pass away. My dad, which was the catalyst for change. The life is too short cliche that whacked me upside the head as after a 12 day cancer diagnosis. And my uncle Mike, who passed away. It'll be two years ago when this is airing. And closest person in my life. And even though I miss them terribly, I miss their laugh, I miss their smile, I miss their tough love, I miss so much of it. I do have a beautiful kind of relationship in their afterlife, you know, their eternal life. So, you know, as far as like death itself, it's not that it freaks me out, but I was really asking myself when this happened, you know, and these, like I said, these were people that are close to me. And I can't just. I mean, I can, but I was like, I did not want to be in the middle of it, you know, I care deeply about these families, deeply. Like we go back 20 years and for one of them, and one was 10 years, and one has been the last five or six, you know, so it's like really important people in my life. But I was like, okay, Trace, this is a time to really ask yourself, what is it about this that you don't like to be in the center of this or you don't feel valuable? Because that's what it was really about. I was like, okay, what's this really about? Because I, you know, death itself, you know, it is what it is. It's hard.
It'S unthinkable, it's hard to really describe unless you've witnessed it firsthand. And I have a couple times. But I was really asking myself, because this, this one hit me really kind of between the eyeballs in a way that nothing has before. And I knew I needed to show up, I really did, because my uncle, like I was telling you a few years ago, our last fight that we had, it was about six years ago, and my uncle is an enneagram 3 and he's intense, he's very Irish. And you know, he has always been my greatest protector and my. The one that I knew loved me unconditionally. But he also delivered the hardest lessons to me more than anyone. And it was about six years ago. He gave me shit about this very thing. There was something happening and I kind of stood back on the sidelines and didn't kind of interject in. And he basically told me I was a big asshole and in not so many words. And, you know, I knew the message he was trying to portray. However, his delivery was really, really bad. And thankfully I'd done enough work.
To not end that relationship. And I said that to him. I said, listen, like, I get what you're trying to tell me, but, you know, cool your a little bit. And we had a great conversation about it and I'm glad we did because it helped me this week. So he said to me, he's like, it's rude that you're not here and like present and showing up, you know, even just in phone form or even a text form. And I said, mike, like, listen, like, I think about myself and this is kind of like around the love languages too. And this is why the Enneagram is so important also. I'll get to that. But I said, mike, if something like that's happening to me, I don't want anybody around. I don't want the fucking phone calls. I don't want the meal train. I don't want people in my house. I don't want people checking on me.
And he was shocked by that. He was really, really shocked by that. He goes, are you serious? And I'm like, I really, really am. I really am. And he's like, I get that. He goes, I don't get it. But okay, but you know, it was a conversation that basically said, like, but you have to consider who you're looking at or who this is. And I mean, this was somebody very close to me that this was happening to at the time. So I get why he was so pissed at me. But I had this aha moment and you know, I' the enneagram, like know who I'm talking to and speak in a way that's effective, right? I use this like, I don't speak to everybody like they're innate unless they're innate love languages. I realize what my love language is. It's quality time followed by physical touch and acts of service. I don't care. Like words of affirmation and gifts mean zero to Me. However, along the way I realize people close to me, that may not be the case. And I love them in their language, but grief and crisis was a language I didn't know other than my own language. And when I said that to him, I had this aha moment. And you know, I got faced with that myself a few years later. It was about a year later actually, when my own health was in crisis and exactly what I wanted was in place. There was absolutely nobody around, not a soul. I wouldn't let my kids be part of it. My own children I wouldn't let be part of that. I wouldn't let people visit me in the medical center. Nobody really even knew what was happening. And I had this moment sitting in a recliner, looking around and I realized I was all alone. It was self inflicted.
And I had this moment like even though I didn't want people seeing me that way. That's what it's really about.
I realized that we are not meant to do this life alone. We're not. We're supposed to be in community. And I think that's part of why this death. One of these deaths this week hit me. Well, all the deaths hit me really hard this week because all three of these people showed me the power of community and showing up. And so when I was thinking about the deaths, I'm like, well, why is it like I get that, but why is it that I have a hard time when it's death? And the fact of the matter is, is when I think about me as an enneagram8, like if there's something to handle, I'm the first one you call.
When there's a death. There's nothing I can handle, there's nothing I can fix, there's nothing I can change. And I don't feel strong or valuable. Hello, enneagram8. And it was really challenging for me because I just wanted to fix the broken hearts of these families, including my own. And my own children were affected by two of these three deaths. Pretty hard.
And so I showed up in the middle of this and it was one of the hardest things I've ever done, quite honestly. And I was very vulnerable in the fact that this is not my strength, but here I am. And the people that were receiving this from me, they said, I know. They both knew that. And I know and you're here and that's all that matters. And that's all I need from you. And it was an eye opening moment. And I was looking around at some of these scenes over the last few days and dealing with that and. And really recognizing how different personalities. And I'm not going to make this an educational thing, but because this is life and this is a tool that helps you navigate life. Right? I am the Enneagram girl, for sure. I will teach you how to integrate it in your leadership in your business and your families, but in grief and in loss and in how we handle the most extreme kind of pain and stress. This might be. Be helpful for you because it helped me. Because if I was just stuck in my own eight ways, believing that I can't be, you know, strong, which is like the anthem of the enneagram8, I can't change this. But you know what? I can show up and actually turn my vice into my virtue. And that's innocence and being that strength, even if I do nothing. My energy was felt. I could feel it. And it was evident. And I don't say that in a like, look at me cocky kind of way, but it was. It was very evident that that strength was needed in that moment. And it was really hard because I couldn't fix it.
I couldn't fix it.
But my energy could at least feel like. People were embraced and protected at a time they felt their most vulnerable. And that was my gift that day. And it will continue probably for weeks to come in certain scenarios. And, you know, I'm not the one to make the meal train list, and I'm not the one to arrange certain things, but if you need somebody to stand in the gap and hold you up.
Call an enneagram8.
So I was thinking about the other Enneagram types, and I know these people very well that are affected by this, their families and stuff. And it was interesting to watch their dynamics and how they show up even in their deepest pain. So if you're an Enneagram one out there, this life is too short thing has hit me square between the eyes. And I know where I have been holding myself back. Not just in the things I'm here to do in the world, but in where I show vulnerability and intimacy in my life and the way that I love. And Nothing like this, three deaths and 72 hours will put things in perspective that something's gotta change. And it's not that I'm in a bad place, but I am not gonna waste one second of this life. And I don't want you to either. So where an Enneagram can get stuck in not moving forward in their life is, you know, taking on responsibility and obsessing about what you should or shouldn't be doing. You know, you guys, the Enneagram throw around the should or shouldn't like.
Like candy. Like they're like huge, you know, red lights and green lights blaring in your mind. You work hard, you criticize yourself and you set expectations to an impossible standard. And I want you Enneagram ones to know that life is too short. And I want you to just please your standards, your integrity in which you operate, your life. We need your example, even if it's messy. Please, please, please keep showing up. That critical voice inside of you isn't God. It isn't even the truth. Please just show self compassion so we can benefit from all the beauty that you bring to this world. My Enneagram Twos, my gosh. You know, you're tired of draining your energy and attempt to meet all these others needs and you overdo it for others because you're afraid of appearing selfish and therefore unlovable. And you know, especially when times like these happen, I see the Enneagram twos. They are the ones that are at the bedside and that holding people's hands and thank God for them. Thank God for them. However, classic enneagram2 behavior will be that you sacrifice yourself and you don't say no. And because you don't want to be deemed as selfish. And you know, there's. There's this thing called moderation and boundaries that are going to be really important even in the most difficult, the hard times where you need to step up. But I want you to remember my Enneagram Twos that sometimes the most loving, helpful thing you can do is say no. Sometimes people need to solve things through other people or on their own. And sometimes helping isn't as helpful as it would seem. It's sometimes kind of enabling. So take the time to get quiet and observe your feelings, even if they're ugly or sad. And I know it doesn't sound fun, but it's crucial to your development and well being and for your gifts to actually show up in the world. Because when you take care of yourself, you're able to serve and help at a deeper level, which is what you really want to do. Now. My Enneagram Threes, you know, you kind of go into. You kind of are operating on like a go getter who runs towards success and away from any sign of mediocrity. You know, you're always working, you're always trying, you're always focusing on your goals. And we all admire you, I want you to know that. But that's not why we love you, it isn't. We love you because you're awesome, not because of what you do, but you know, when you are constantly moving that finish line, you aren't experiencing the joy. And I saw some Enneagram Threes over the last few days that it really hit them. And they're all in all their goal, achieving that. They're missing the miracles right in front of you, and I don't want you to do that. It's awesome that you have goals. It is. It's awesome that you put the blinders on and you go after it.
But I want you to remember that the stress of overworking can lead you to long term stress, chronic pain, death.
I believe stress was a factor in two of these three deaths. Believe it or not.
High levels of stress.
And you know, you will sacrifice your body, you will sacrifice relationships, and I don't want you to do that anymore. Get in touch with your feelings, even the most vulnerable ones, and try to clarify what that actually means to you on a personal level. One of my best friends is an enneagram3. And you know, she knew one of these people too, and it rocked her pretty hard too, for this very reason. You know, do you really need that next achievement? Do you really need that next promotion or car? Or is your reason for going after that related to a deeper, unmet need that you need to work on? I want you to spend time with the people you care about. They don't love you because of what you do or what you achieve or how you appear to the world. They love you because you're you. My Enneagram Fours, you know, they can go one of two ways in these kind of situations. You know, fours definitely frequently feel misunderstood and unseen. And there's this raw part of the enneagram4 that really wishes someone could just see and appreciate them.
So you often struggle to feel visible and valuable and sometimes more to yourself than even others. And you have dreams and visions for your life. But then your dark moods and melancholy feelings can keep you from going after them. And what I see happen so much in Enneagram fours. I work with a lot of fours, and I have very intimate relationships with fours. And what I see happening is you have these visions and. And it. And you guys are the most intuitive, emotional people on the Enneagram. These are your gifts. But what happens is either somewhere along the line, somebody said something that pissed you off, told you you're too much, told you you shouldn't feel this way, or made you feel like it didn't matter, or Abandoned you. And so when you have these vis.
Intuitive things come to you, what I see happen is you go into your head immediately and out of your instincts and out of your intuition, and you start reverse engineering it.
And then it robs you of your gifts and then you keep chasing it or you just withdraw from life altogether. So over time, my beautiful Enneagram Fours, you feel like you don't even deserve to have what you want. And you guys are the kings and queens of sabotage. Longing is your constant companion, and shame is an all too frequent visitor. So my Enneagram Fours out there, I want you to just, you know, step into your gifts. Feelings can be overwhelming and consuming. I know this.
You know, you can allow yourself to feel the hurt, but keep in mind that it will pass. You can also, like, really talk to somebody that gets you. And if you feel like nobody gets you, trust me, you'll have to look. Because you guys, you guys are hard to read at first, right? Having a little structure in your life that builds up your confidence, right? Usually around health and wellness and nutrition and even just one little behavior structure will build your confidence and will allow you to tap into your intuition, meditation and prioritizing, getting enough sleep and like I said, exercising and eating well. And I want you to nurture that creative side and having a little self discipline. Find ways to act on your visions and principles. We know it's a big list. I know it's a big list, so you don't have to let it overwhelm you. Pick one thing at a time, but be patient with yourself and don't beat yourself up if it takes time. You don't decide to go to the Olympics and win the gold medal the next day. So four is just keep that in mind. You are loved and supported, my Enneagram Fives. You guys have a knack of standing back and viewing life objectively sometimes. You know, an Enneagram eight under extreme stress takes on some of these traits of the five. So, like my knack of standing back and viewing life objectively without emotional bias. That was me this week for a moment. But Fives do this constantly. You're highly observant. You gather enormous amounts of data so that your decisions can be informed and wise. But unfortunately, no matter how much information you have, it never seems like enough. And you're, you know, hoarding these resources and energy. And you see people who have far less intelligence than you succeeding just because they have better social skills or act faster. And you have those skills too, but you're going to have to detach from this need for all the data. Right? You want connection. Believe it or not, Fives want connection. So do Eights. But people can tend to overwhelm you sometimes. But I want you to remember this. My Fives integration for you means embracing some qualities of the eight. Right? Fives and Eights are strongly connected. This means being a little more decisive, getting in touch with your body and trusting those instincts a little bit more. And taking action. Go ahead and take the risk and speak up. Even if you risk saying something, you later have to take back. Movement for a 5. And getting outside is very key. And practicing being in the present and not like analyzing things, asking for what you want and letting others know that they matter to you. You can detach from the need to know everything, but I don't want you detaching from people because this is actually what motivates you deep down. Once you know that, you can regulate the energy output and you don't have to be so worried about it. Trust me. We need your wisdom. Fives. My six is you often feel bombarded by worries and premonitions about possible worst case scenarios. And the ground beneath your feet feels shaky and unsteady because you feel conflicted. A lot of time you want to trust. That's why they call you the loyalist. But you don't want to be duped and you want to relax. But your mind is always scanning for danger. You want to love, but you're worried about being abandoned or taken advantage of. And there's so many conflicting voices and thoughts inside your head telling you different things that it can be next to impossible to be free and feel free and to be present in the moment. My. My best friend is a six. And this is so true. Like. But once they trust and remember that you can overcome your fears and be capable of taking action in the presence of them.
You can be fearful and take action at the same time. Especially if you have the right people supporting you. The people that say they got your back and can actually do it. You're not a slave to your worries, Sixes. You can become the controlling narrative and shut off all the other voices in your head. Practice talking to yourself in compassionate ways and practice trusting when people say kind things to you. You don't have to automatically assume that somebody's out to get you. Guys really do take things personal sometimes. I talk to my best friend all the time. Like I know it feels personal. Trust me, I know. But it isn't.
You know, for the six to try to reality check your suspicions and fears with others by asking them if they're really thinking what you think they are. For example, if you assume someone's having a negative thought about you, just flat out ask them. My friend has, my best friend has. She's like, this is what I believe you're thinking about me. And, and it's. She's been able to see firsthand how much of a case she can build in her head and how that holds her back in other areas of her life. And I know it is for you, my sixes. So, you know, really testing this and looking at where maybe you were afraid of something, but you moved forward anyway and look for that evidence. My enneagram sevens, my action oriented and adventurous. You crave excitement and a sense of possibility every single day. And unfortunately, your hunger for new experiences can give you intolerance for boredom and an incessant case of fomo. And so you can bounce from thing to thing. And you might feel that you can't get what you really want because you spread yourself too thin and you take on too many opportunities. You probably feel trapped whenever you have to focus on one thing for an extended period of time. And then you leave dozens of half finished projects in your wake and you either feel like you're leaving too much unfinished or not getting enough time to do all the things you really want to do. You want the benefits of sticking with things, but you also want the freedom to switch directions when the mood strikes. And I know for the seven, this is like the constant vice versus virtue. The vice of the seven is gluttony and the virtue is sobriety. Like you want all the things, but you know, like being able to be in a container where you do one thing at a time. You're worried that you'll. You'll miss out. But I want you to remember my sevens, that integration for you comes from when you move towards the five. Right? That's the growth number of the seven. This means calming yourself down, exploring subjects in depth. It means placing value on self, discipline and wisdom more than action. So the sevens, like practice sticking with your problems instead of immediately tuning them out or calling somebody. Like most people like me, I need to get better about picking up the phone and calling people. For the seven, it's more important that you find some solitude in that healthy five and find somebody you trust. Just one person to talk about your struggles, not distract you from them. Focusing on the projects you're currently doing instead of fantasizing about all the better things you could be doing. Remind yourself that finishing a project Will be deeply satisfying. And I promise you there will be time to do all the things, if possible. Like, you know that we see that Enneagram Sevens are the most innovative and visionary a lot of the times. But it'll be important to have some support staff around you so that you can maintain your focus and so you don't feel trapped and that you have executors in your life so that you don't feel trapped, but you actually are bringing all your visions and innovative spirits to life.
My fellow eights, my bold and independent Eights, you have an inner strength and fighting spirit that can both be a blessing and a curse.
I know this to be true. We eights often feel like people are prematurely, prematurely judging us for our intensity. And, you know, with great reward comes great responsibility. Our gift is our intensity.
But you have to understand that people can pick up on your intensity without you even saying a word. And you may inadvertently scare people away without meaning to. I do this all the time, even without saying a word, just in the way that I show up in the world. I have lost people, a lot of people along the way. And it used to be a big blow up, but now it's just like a quiet goodbye. It doesn't mean that there's any, you know, loss in, like, love for each other, but it's just like the part of the story is over. Eights often feel like the world wastes time with sugar coating. It's like, bottom line, me and diplomacy. When a more direct take charge approach would improve anything. It's like, why in this situation with grief around me where it's like, okay, well, I can't do anything about this, so I can. You know, AIDS can feel trapped when people you love try to tone you down or make you follow their rules.
Eights can feel an incessant urge to stick your neck out to protect others. But then you feel like too many people are willing to be doormats for the rest of the world. Like, we can be judgy about it.
Oftentimes the eights are judged by our aggressive, intense outer demeanor without seeing the caring, tender spirit underneath. We are honestly the most misunderstood on the enneagram, especially enneagram8women. But I want my other eights to remember that verbal sparring is often energizing to you but draining to others. I found myself trying to pick a fight last week, which I haven't done that in a long, long time. But because I was feeling ultra vulnerable, even before these three deaths, I was feeling so exposed and so vulnerable. And you know, the vice of the eight is lust and a craving of intensity. So you know, remembering that we don't have to do that to get our needs met and learning the art in negotiation. And pause. Pause is innate's best friend. To see things from other people's perspectives before immediately taking charge, lashing out. Finding friends who appreciate our intense behavior and that can accept us for who we are. But that means we're going to have to show vulnerability, by the way, because otherwise there's this codependency going on. Make sure that your expectations for yourself are realistic too. And make sure that you're allowing yourself time for fun, creativity and physical action. And I've made sure that I have been putting this in my calendar. It is a game changer. And when I do this, because the reason why eights don't want to do is because fun, creativity and doing other things that were not on high alert means we could be betrayed or violated.
And that's why, you know, our innocence is so fiercely guarded. But for us to step into the virtue of the eight, it's going to require us to put the walls down. And actually I make a lot more money and I have a lot more great relationships in my life when I do allow myself time for these things.
The Enneagram Nines might consider it an open minded Nines. You care deeply about what others need and want and sometimes can feel trapped because people take your warm, accepting nature for granted. That's usually when you get a little passive aggressive or stubborn. You may feel like it's nearly impossible to stand up for yourself sometimes, so you choose to go along with what others want. Others want. Instead. You kind of can feel confused about what you really want because you've shut down your own thoughts, beliefs, opinions for so long because you've been so concerned with not rocking the boat. But that anger is brewing, let me tell you. And your sensitivity to criticism, your need for harmony. But you're also. But also your simultaneous need for independence and freedom can be at odds with each other all the time. And this is where a 9 can be like Eeyore, paralyzed and stuck. And eventually if you get pushed enough, that's when you can be explosive. So for my Nines, I want you to remember that your voice matters.
It really, really like you guys bring the world together. You like you make us feel non judged. Give your opinions and desires as more, as much or more credit like it's, it's so credible than what people around you think. I promise you, I promise you this is so, so important for you guys to take this in. Take the first step to change a situation that isn't right, but, but and bring up your problems with others instead of letting them simmer and boil under the surface. Like, this is what I see happen a lot with the nines is like you're like, well, this person has bigger problems. Well, it could be worse. Well, and then you know, it's shoved under the rug. Shoved under the rug and then eventually it's going to boil and bubble up like a volcano. So practice feeling the buildup of emotions in your body. You're in the body triad, so you are an instinctual person, right? And it is your truth. And that is what you're, you're driven by. You're driven by truth and justice. You're motivated by that. Don't discount your truth. But when you start to feel the buildup of emotions in your body, try to express them calmly right away instead of acting like everything is fine. The people who care about you really want you to express yourself authentically. The problem is, is when you explode like a volcano, volcano, they don't know what to do with that because it seems so out of character.
So you know, I know that this life is too short thing.
For those of you listening that have been grieving something, I mean 2020 also taught us how short life is and how things can change on a dime and how a blind side can come and rock your world. Like 2020 showed that. The last week has showed me that. And I know for myself, I saw some blind spots in myself and girl, girls and boys. Let me tell you, I don't care how much work you do. If you are raising your hand and say, I want to grow and be a better me every day, then just know that every day something might come up that you have to address. And you can address it with love, you can address it with compassion and know that it is here to show you something today, in the present day time. Don't waste one more second, not one more. And if you need some guidance in this and understanding yourself at a deeper level and need to know how to integrate some of these tools in your life. This is what I do. This is what I wake up so passionate about every day because I've seen it work firsthand for myself. The most stubborn pain in the ass person I've ever met in my life. I've turned my family around, I've turned, turned my businesses around, I've turned my friendships around. I've allowed love into my life in ways that I never could have before in all my relationships. And there's always going to be work to do and having somebody show you the way. I know the way. I've gone the way. So let me show you the way. And if that is something that you want, reach out to me. You can find me on Instagram at traceyomalley.
Or you can go to my website@traine O' Malley.com the work with me section to find out more. But if your heart is hurting and you feel stuck in grief and loss, it's time to do the damn work. You get one shot at this life. 1. And I know for these three people that meant a lot to me.
Not one of them would have said they wish they had done this more or this more. What they would have wanted is to spend more time with the people they cared about. Putting a lot of the bullshit aside, if you need to tell somebody you love them today, go do it. If you need to apologize, go do it. If you need to let people's part of their story be over in your life, let it go. Don't waste one more day. Not one. And I'm here for you. I'm thinking about you.
You know, I'm thinking about all these people that meant a lot to me. And as this is airing, gosh, I'm pretty. I think it might even be airing on the anniversary of my uncle's passing. It'll be two years.
Know that. You know, these deaths, these grieving things, these tragedies that we experience in life, these hard moments, losing a job, losing money, losing. Losing pregnancies, losing houses. You know, they're all meant to teach us something. It doesn't mean that it feels good when it's happening, but we can turn even the most hard things into something beautiful. And especially when it comes to death. I know all these people, including my uncle, would never want us wasting one more second that we have here. So reach out. I'm here for you. I'm thinking about you and I love you. Until next time, here's to becoming bulletproof.
