Let's go.
One of the greatest gifts of the Enneagram and the framework that it provides is when life gets a little crazy. You know, nobody is immune to it. I don't care how much work you do on yourself, I don't care how many events you go to or how many Tony Robbins quotes you know, life does not discriminate you. 2020 proved that quite honestly, none of us are immune to life happening. And I gotta say, like I, you know, the 2020 was okay for me, honestly because I am more introverted by nature, I do work from home. All the things that isn't really what kind of put me in stress, I will say when things started to open up again and is when I started to feel my levels kind of elevate my stress the way that I would navigate things. Also I gotta say during 2020 when we were all in quarantine, I did a lot more self reflection. I had more space. So it kind of like poked the bear, I like to say. And I am so thankful for the framework of the Enneagram because although like I said, I'm not even immune. I teach this shit, I help you integrate it. I have helped thousands of people with this and I am still not immune. And I'm telling you this because this is an ever going process. Until your time on earth is done, just raise your hand and say I'm here for it. I'm here for the process. But thankfully knowing what I know, not just the information, but I have practiced for over a decade integrating this into my life. I don't stay stuck in stress and anxiety and uncertainty for too long. Doesn't mean it's fun, does not mean it's convenient, does not mean I enjoy any part of it. But like I said, I raised my hand and said I'M here for it, and I'm going to kind of go through all nine Enneagram types and give you each three to five tips on how to pull you out of the stress rut, how to keep your head from spinning off.
You know, and. And we're always in a constant state of conscious change. You know, you're listening to my podcast because you want to continue to rewrite your mindset in different situations. You want to grow as an individual as you journey through life. And so specific areas of self development and growth are required. And the Enneagram, really what I love about it also is that it doesn't just poke fun at the behavior, but it definitely tackles what stress can do for our personality and how that can show up. Right? So we each can integrate into another number. You've heard me talk about our growth numbers. That's what integration means. That's where I specialize. But I also specialize in showing you what it looks like when you disintegrate under stress into a totally different Enneagram type that looks a little bit different than your norm. This leads you to behave like another type in its most dysfunctional.
Function. I would like to say. And this can be one way to explain the shifts in your normal behavior that you undergo when you're under a lot of stress. And stress can hit, like I said, at any time during heated meetings, in traffic, or when you have misplaced things, when the kids are screaming or, you know, you're feeling tension between your partner and yourself, or maybe friends are exploring other friends and you're starting to feel that rumble in your belly, moving, divorce, deaths, 20, 20, anything that creates some uncertainty. The common theme is not feeling like your usual self, basically. So you might feel like a fish out of water sometimes. And because you've pushed your natural go to in your Enneagram type to the limit. And this is what I say. Like, each Enneagram type has their, like, healthiest version. Yay, I'm an eight version. And then the, oh my God, I just went to the hardcore eight, right? When my hardcore eight ness, meaning my domineering, my aggressiveness, even my explosive anger, doesn't work anymore. What happens is, is I'm tapping out and I'm diseng, disintegrating into another type altogether. And each type does this. So I'm going to tell you how that plays out for each of you. So my Enneagram type ones, the Reformers, improvers, also known as the perfectionists. And when things go against your, you know, black and white Thinking your tightly held principles, your internal sense of balance kind of faces the tipping point. So you might break down in private as you face this, between your idealistic moral cold code and reality. A lot of sometimes you won't see a one outwardly have a breakdown, but under stress, under extreme stress, when that inner critic doesn't work anymore, the one disintegrates into the type 4, the unhealthy 4, and fall into the spells of melancholy, longing and feeling misunderstood. A1 might suddenly become aware of art and how it relates to your personal life. All of a sudden you might be feeling very creative in the most dramatic way.
More attuned to the beauty or lack thereof of nature. Like this is kind of how you zone out, but how one can beat stress.
You go to the healthy seven when you're thriving. So I say have more fun. I give ones the homework of having unplanned, unspreadsheeted fun, right? So spending quality time with fun loving friends, siblings and really find that playful inner child in you, something else.
Ones can really help to be get out of that. You know, monotonous black and white thinking is either a day or chunks of day time blocking for them to have relax and reflect time, right? Any watching anything fun, reading anything fun, planned breaks will allow you to beat burnout because ones can burn themselves out in their rigidity. So I often have one spread out their workday even a little bit further. So I do the same thing because if I'm just like head first into it, I definitely will burn out.
But the most reflective thing as a one that I would like you to do because you are so black and white thinking it's hard to see the beauty and the joy and all the blessings in the gray area. So really creating this container where you can look and investigate what things, activities, people.
Whatever made you genuinely happy and genuinely happy during your childhood. This is something that's really, really important in this work is thinking back to where this started, right? So for me, like when I'm in my rigidness in a different way, I really look back to when little T was happy. This, this goes for like how we deal with stress too. But I want you to kind of learn how to pull yourself out of the doom and gloom, the anxiety, the isolation, whatever. So for the one investigating what genuinely made you happy as a, as a kid, and if you have a hard time like me remembering much, be patient with yourself. You have to really invite in and be intentional with inviting in the thoughts, memories, emotions and feelings from childhood. Especially if you don't remember a lot like I didn't. So it's something that's really important. The Enneagram type twos, the helpers, the givers, the compassionate givers. Since your sense of well being and worth is tied to the relationships you have with others, any type of conflict or people giving.
Or people giving you the cold shoulder is going to leave you feeling kind of shattered, quite honestly under stress. This is, this is where my son and I, because he's a two, where we used to like go toe to toe under stress. The Enneagram 2, the sweet, compassionate helper, all of a sudden disintegrates into the unhealthier type 8. You might get pushy in the pursuit of securing love and affection. It's your way of white knuckling things.
Sometimes an 8 can be very controlling to the point where everyone in your circle might feel like they're walking on eggshells. I know this to be true, which is so out of character and nature of you. So sometimes this will even spiral you into more shame once you come out of it because it's so out of character for you under extreme circumstances. An enneagram too might even corner people into making harsh decisions about your relationships. Like I know when my son and I are battling, he needs like he will try and push me into a corner to have this resolved because he's feeling terrible about this. And I'm like, listen, I promise you we'll have this conversation in 20 to 30 minutes if you back the. It's interesting, but when a 2 feels like the relationship is at risk, that's where they can kind of be under extreme stress. Very 8ish. So how can a 2help beat this? Art or music therapy is super helpful. So a two in a growth pattern looks to the healthy four, which is that individualist. So doing activities by themselves.
Exploring your probably dormant artistic side and let your feelings unleash themselves. Because twos are so typically about giving and putting others needs first, they have a hard time tapping into this. So when I see a 2 exploring this, I'm like, yes, they're growing. And the chances of you being put off and set off by some of this other stuff that might naturally derail you kind of dissipates.
You know, going shopping by yourself, finding your own unique style, not one that you think other people might like, understanding that your compassionate heart, you know, the twos can kind of use this as a victim thing and they can also kind of be a martyr with it. But really, you know, looking at Do I give to get? And if you really analyze, like how often you say yes to stuff for some subconscious need to be approved, liked, get attention, you're going to recognize. And again, I say this because I want you to lean in with compassion and honor. This will allow you to say yes to the things that you really enjoy and tap into those things, like art, music, creativity, things like that.
Boundaries. So if you're to letting others know you're taking time off to heal and work on some things for a while and that you're not available for help, that that's going to be one of the hardest things you do because so much of your worth for so long has been tied into that.
Exploring this will help you have healthier boundaries. This is really, really important. And for twos, like really exploring where you come from and where this all started, what, why, giving and, and where, where figuring out what people needed became a thing for you.
This will allow you to kind of do the six degrees of separation into who you are. It's, it's powerful, powerful work. But I must say, only do this with compassion, empathy, and honor. This is not an opportunity to pull out the whipping stick. All right, my Enneagram threes, you guys have probably the highest, highest, highest risk of burnout because after long hours of blood, sweat, and tears, you've hit the dead end. And that can be a major source of stress. Sometimes your body breaks down. A lot of times your relationships will break down.
And because your worth is tied into what you do, what you achieve, and how you appear, if you cannot do that, then you might get caught into a downward spiral where everything begins to tumble in the opposite direction at record speed. So under stress, believe it or not, the Enneagram 3 disintegrates into the type 9, which is the peacemaker. And this is where all of a sudden you fall into the rabbit hole of procrastination, chronic daydreaming. You get a little lazy, spirited.
More easygoing than your usual like, go, go, go attitude. And this might seem nice on the surface, and for other types, this might be a very good thing. But what happens is then you'll stress out further due to the heaps of unfinished work and the glare of checklists undone. And it's almost a way that you sabotage and shame yourself. It really, really is. Now, for other types, resting and doing that is important. And there's this fine line for an enneagram 3 between rest and checking out. So how can a 3 beat stress and take the edge off a little bit? Try and explore things outside of your career. Asking friends join meetup groups, travel, anything. And when you explore activities outside your career, this does not give you an opportunity to talk about your career with new people you meet. I see this happen a lot in my network Marketers. You join new things for fun, but then you end up doing turn it into talking shop. No, no, no, no, no. Write out a list of qualities you admire and appreciate in each friend and let them know this is something that really happens. For Enneagram Threes is you're so fixated on the goal, the achievement, the award, the accolades that you really have left some people in the dust. Now I'm all about surrounding yourself with people who are.
Growing like you are. But know that as an enneagram3, most won't keep the pace as you, but it doesn't mean they're not growing. And sometimes Threes can feel can be judgmental. If you're not going the same speed I am, then bye. You'll burn out your marriage, your kids, everything. So this is something to keep important tabs on.
Gratitude journals to remind yourself of the many things that life has given you. But be truthful. And I want you to focus if you're a three, not on the things you've achieved, but maybe the energy, the people in your life, not the ones that are necessarily growing your business. This will be really, really important because this will help you come to terms with why you're doing what you do and you actually may have fulfillment. Then when I see threes help others discover their own identities and offer to be their mentor or advisor without monetary gain. This is important. This is cool to watch or something that doesn't pump you up or that, you know, I really want to challenge a three to not look for a thank you from it or thank you, you're so amazing. This is really hard. I understand, because that's how they measure their worth. But for my Threes, your worth is so much more than what you do achieve or how you appear. For my Enneagram Fours, whether it's your first or seventh crisis of the week, My individualists, you find yourself trapped in the funk without a clear identity to distinguish yourself from others. You start comparing when you sense. When you sense yourself being called into question. Here comes the inevitable stress for type Fours. So you know, the fours are the. The creative romantic individualists and they struggle with envy. They believe something's chronically missing from them. They're not jealous, they aren't hateful at all. And they just think that there's something missing in them. So under stress the four can look like an unhealthy two.
And they can see non existent needs from others to be filled and attended to. This is how they distract the woe is me part of them. The this also this is a way they avoid kind of going to the dark hole of withdrawing because they withdraw and it's hard.
Sometimes they might kind of begin a new slew of friendships and and volunteering commitments to feel that void. They will start trying to fill the void and that's why they can look like an unhealthy 2. This can be a great move, but not if you're doing it for the wrong reasons. Right? There's this fine line. The very thing you need can also be the very thing that takes you out. It all depends on the motive behind it and the come from behind it. So how a 4 can beat stress.
Volunteering to lend a helping hand in situations you've yet to encounter an experience.
Getting outside in nature, getting outdoors, moving your body because the energy and the emotion of the four is the greatest. The emotion is so it they're the most energetic emotionally. On the Enneagram, moving your body daily is required. Also adding a little tiny bit of structure into the the day of an enneagram 4 will boost confidence and you won't end up comparing so much. You will actually start to walk differently. I see this a lot with fours.
You know, sharing your personal experiences because fours are so creative. Sharing your personal experiences in the form of creative writing, storytelling, podcasting, video to people around the world. You guys are the greatest storytellers. You hold the best emotional space for everyone. And when you start to share your story, people are drawn to that. And this is where you can shine in your gifts. Really, really, really important for a little bit of structure, a little bit of movement and using your voice. For my Enneagram type Fives, the investigators, the introverts, the most introverted of the Enneagram, your stress alarm sounds when your personal space and privacy has been invaded one too many times. And at this point, a 5 might kind of go into angry fits, tearful meltdowns, and lack of concentration. This is where they can also go down the dark hole of Google. And while you're at it, when you hit the isolate button faster than you can tell others to leave you alone, you know you've gone to the dark side. My fives. So this is interesting. So when Enneagram fives, when when the isolation button doesn't work anymore under stress, the five can disintegrate into the type seven, the enthusiast, which seems hilarious, doesn't it? But they can partake in wild and outlandish activities to shut down the brain's thinking side. And this is when they rev up the feel good pleasure centers. A5 could live for the moment and chase the next high. Now you might think, well, that's a good thing. Well, yes, but it's a slippery slope towards a bucket load of intense addictions. I see this happen a lot. There's a fine line between discernment of I need to let some steam off versus manic behavior. So this is so interesting because the type 5 goes to the healthy 8 in a growth pattern. So this is where radical honesty with yourself comes in or having somebody very trusted with you to kind of like see your blind spots. So how a 5 can beat stress, again, movement is really, really important. It kind of gets the crazy monkey brain to settle down, Making a conscious effort to reconnect with people in nature. This is homework. I give fives all the time.
Reading books and watching videos on emotional intelligence. I know all my fives are like, yes, something to research. No, not just research, but apply them with your interactions with others. Because here's the thing, Fives know it all. They do. They understand all of this in a logical level, but the application part, not so much. And this is where they get cocky and then enter entrepreneurship. And then they're like, oh, I don't know how to do this. I just know what to do, right? There's a difference between in what to do from understanding versus how to do it. And the only way we get good at how to do it is actually by integration. That's why I say information doesn't equal transformation. Integration does. Eating healthier foods into the diet and exercise of a daily routine will be important for a five. And okay, fives, buckle up. I dare say try activities outside of your comfort zone. Things that scare you, things that you're not perfect at, things you have know nothing about. It will get easier each time, I promise. And this will really allow you to have more discernment and lean into that healthier eight. You know that fearless challenger. So do it. My six is the loyalist type. Sixes tend to stress over becoming stressed itself. And this is true. Their need for certainty and security and safety is stronger than any other type on the enneagram. And the chances are my sixes out there have devised multiple strategies to calm the jitters. Yet sometimes stress somehow manages to find new ways to come. Knock, knock, knocking on your door. So under stress, the loyalist skeptic, the strategist, becomes into the unhealthier part of the three so they can fixate upon getting ahead and artificially exuding charisma out of anxiety. I see this from my best friend all the time. The sixes under extreme stress become more competitive and focused on the outer appearance. So a six kind of will go down the for shame hits down the scroll hole. And this is when Instagram can be very dangerous for my sixes. So like I said, if you use social media, you'll spend hours trying to convince others that you're living your best life, which couldn't be further from the truth. Or you'll start thinking like, I got to do this, I got to do this, I got to do this. So how can a six beat stress? Well, they need to talk things out. So having somebody that they trust that can hold space with them, that won't judge them where they can just like brain dump it all out, that's important. Asking yourself, and it's really hard when you're in the middle of this. What is the best that can happen? Really, really important. Meditation, practicing spirituality, dabbling in various positive mantras to keep your spirits high. I mean, I'm all for that, but you can't just put it out in the universe without action. That means you're going to have to like walk in faith once you do that, right? It's one thing to say give yourself mantras and believe in manifestation, but then you're going to have to walk that talk.
Hanging out with people who emit and radiate good positive energy will be really, really important for a six because they're always so cautious when people are positive. And.
It really helps you not be so worried all the time.
Like I said, deepening your existing relationships by openly voicing your concerns and also empathizing with others. So something that a six kind of does sometimes is they'll kind of be judgy because their own certainty and their own safety is at risk. And so kind of talking this out without expecting everybody to understand that you are thinking worst case scenario all the time will be really, really.
I know that having a six best friend knowing that she has a very safe place to not only vent, but to validate it. Like, listen, I understand this rocks your world. This is scary for you. I understand that this feels like this. It feels very personal and it's not. And then giving them some gentle guidance will help calm the crazy. For the sixes. My enneagram 7's the enthusiasts.
You Know, why is everything such a blur for you guys? Sometimes, you know, you, your, your stress levels can rise when you're pulled back into reality, when you're out living the good life and bouncing from thing to thing because you want to experience everything that there is in life. You want to say yes to all the things. And so you do. And then you end up overwhelmed. And then you also realize that it doesn't give you the high that you were hoping for. And then you're spun out and you start to get a little irritable. And you know when you can't just bounce from thing to thing and thing, and that's not giving you the hit of excitement that you want.
Under stress, a 7 can disintegrate into a type 1, which is that improver, reformer, the perfectionist, and adopt a more rigid black and white thinking attitude. It's so weird because that free spirit all of a sudden becomes nitpicky with all the injustices of the world. A7 can develop a charge interest in larger social issues to avoid their own kind of crisis in their head. The inner child of a seven is replaced with newfound anger and irritation with everything around them. So one thing that I have a seven do is, you know, having a friend that is close to you that can bring you back into reality. But sometimes this can piss a 7 off more. So it has to be somebody that you trust gets you. Otherwise you might feel dismissed. And that will set you down a whole different road of stress. Breaking down your goals into small actionable steps will be really, really important. Now this doesn't minimize all the big things you want to do. Just know that you have to break it down to be able to attain it better, faster, more fun. Make a list of areas you like to improve on and share it with somebody who will encourage you to follow through. Exploring other subjects like psychology, sociology, ethics, anything to learn about what your true values are. Inspiring others to find their joy through your boundless levels of positive energy. You know, I also recognize that sevens sometimes feel stressed because they are so positive and outgoing all the time that the people closest to them don't think that, that they ever have a bad day. And so when they do, sometimes they can feel dismissed. So letting your people know when you are struggling, even though you try to avoid the hard feelings, will allow you to know who your people are. All right, my fellow Enneagram Eights, the challengers. You know.
Sometimes we find ourselves stuck in a situation where we have absolutely no control over power dynamics. There are times, believe it or not an 8 can feel at a loss for words or actions, Whether that's a controlling boss, unruly client, or a friend who threatens to blackmail you or you feel backed into a corner.
You know, a lot of times you'll see an enneagram8. And this is where, like, this is where enneagram eights are the most mistyped. Because if we get explosive, angry, domineering people automatically assume they're eights, and that's just not true.
You know, but when we have been pushed beyond the brink and when you're in a stress situation deep as quicksand.
We look very different than what you might expect. And this is where my friend says, I am in the Five Cave. So an enneagram 8. When our domineering and our aggressiveness and our powering through and pumping our chest and flexing our muscles doesn't work, an 8 disintegrates into the type 5, the investigators. And we spend more time alone with mostly pessimistic thoughts. This is also where we build a case of how we're going to kill you. And I mean that light. But this is how we build a case on how we're going to go into ultra protector mode. Sometimes it can be very quiet. This means just another layer of another level of bricks just got put up on the wall, right? This is also where innate can abandon projects and focus on absorbing more knowledge. I do this a lot. This is how we build the case, right? More think and less do. And the gift of the eight is do action, Big action. So as a result, an 8 may develop tunnel vision and be unable to see the bigger picture. And honestly, even though, like, I'm in a great place in my life, there's an area of my life where this keeps coming up. And I find myself in the five cave. So how can my fellow eights kind of beat this? Getting in touch with the softer side, Allowing somebody in your life to see your vulnerability in real time. This feels like death to an 8. Sometimes movement will be so, so important not only to move that intensity around, but to boost the feel. Good endorphins to clear the mind.
Visualizing your worries dissipating into the air and positive self talk. This one's hard for an 8 to do, but because the intuition of an 8 is so strong, we do feel it. But sometimes when we're in the Dark 5 cave, it's hard to express this. This is really important to be able to pull yourself out of it.
And this is where the fine line for the eight comes into play, allowing yourself space to process and validate your seemingly foreign or useless emotions. Like sadness. Like eights don't like to feel sadness. So giving yourself the space and time without a time limit to process this with somebody is the holy grail. Because I can go into a whole lot of space to process, but it doesn't mean I'm wanting to feel it. I might be mindless in that. So really, not just creating space, but allowing vulnerability to come to the surface with another human being will be scary as shit. It but really, really important for the Enneagram 8. And finally my Enneagram nines. The peacemakers.
Disharmony and discord stress you out and make you feel extremely scared and apathetic towards everyone around you. You have this desire to keep the peace in the environment, in your surroundings. So you might lose touch with your surroundings as each day blends into a large, indistinguishable, apathetic blur. You know, the more that you kind of stuff what you want, what you feel, what you think, you really do lose sight of what you desire. And you kind of like Eeyore, I don't care. Whatever you want. And you're so easygoing that a lot of people might not even notice it. You are inclusive, so a lot of people might not even notice this. And this is where this can get really scary and hard to pull a nine out of this. And when that stops working, you disintegrate into an unhealthy six. And this is where the passive aggressive behavior really comes out because you start to blindly suspect vile or harmful intentions in others. Where all of a sudden your easygoingness and inclusivity goes to the trash because you begin to read between the lines and everyday conversations and become hyper aware of ulterior mot or potential threats. So you can be completely scattered, almost out of your mind. You can look into far off conspiracies and you start to legitimately be concerned about that which is so different from the easygoing, you know, kind of Free Spirited 9, right? Because you guys are so seeing the bigger picture of everything. You, you have the ability to look at the world very differently than all of us. But when you get the tunnel vision in that unhealthy six go sideways. So how can you do that? More movement, nature, solitude, quiet reflection. Not mindless. Not mindless like netflixing, but really inviting in quiet reflection. Taking a social media detox will be really important for 9Clean. Cleaning up your online presence. Caring for something that's not you, like a pet or a plant. And really nurturing it daily because you guys can end up lazy, spirited and really kind of let everything go. So having to care for something can be really important.
Reading books on motivation with concepts and strategies to kickstart a game plan. So like a 9 in a growth pattern looks like a healthy 3 and has the ability to tap into that achiever. So this is where you take action. So action will cure or at least help help the stress of a nine when that feels like the last thing you want to do.
You know, and having a really ambitious or go getting friend probably a three. Nines and threes really are good together.
For advice and their personal story to seeking action. So it's really, really important when you recognize this about yourself. It's not permission to give yourself a whipping stick and go into the shame spiral. Because after you figured out how to combat stress for your type, you know it really does get easier. You're not as afraid to move forward even when you don't know what's in front of you. It doesn't mean you're ever gonna feel balanced because life 1 degree can throw you off balance. But you will be able to find harmony between all of it and you'll be able to see the aspects of integration and your growth unfold over time. And it really is a win win situation. Yeah, it will be hard at first. It will. And you know, be gentle with yourself during this discovery and integration process. It it I've been at this 10 years of just the enneagram integration. It is still challenging even knowing what I know.
But you don't have to have it take as long as I did. You don't. And so if this is something you want to explore more, I encourage you to continue listening to this podcast. It doesn't mean it's going to always be fun or without pain. I can't promise you that because that is life. But it is in the discomfort and sometimes even the pain where we can find the blessings and really take off the goggles and see some of the things that we hadn't seen before.
